His research title: Assessing macroplastic abundance distribution and human perceptions towards plastic pollution in the Mvudi River System, Thoyandou, South Africa. He was supervised by UMP Lecturers Dr Tatenda Dalu; Dr Mazvita TB Dalu and Dr  Ross N Cuthbert from the Queens University Belfast, Northern Island.

His research, which focused on the abundance, distribution, and perceptions of people towards plastic pollution along the Mvudi River system in South Africa, presented several obstacles.

“I encountered difficulties in collecting data, especially macro plastics along the Mvudi River, interacting with the community, and analysing the data,” he explained that through perseverance, innovative problem-solving, and effective planning, he overcame these hurdles.

Mashamba’s experience at UMP was deeply enriched by the institution’s emphasis on community engagement and academic stringency. He found the hands-on laboratory work and fieldwork particularly rewarding. He achieved significant milestones that underscore his commitment to excellence. One of his most notable accomplishments was graduating with Cum Laude for his Honours Degree.

“Graduation brings a profound sense of fulfillment and pride. It is a culmination of my efforts and a milestone that signifies my growth and accomplishments. Graduating Cum Laude reassures me that I am on the right path and capable of achieving my goals."

Mashamba extended heartfelt gratitude to his supportive supervisors and fellow Aquatic System Research Group (ASRG) members for their guidance and mentorship.

UMPMashamba is pursuing a PhD.

His success is a testament to my dedication, hard work, and passion for my field of study. Maintaining high academic standards required rigorous study habits, effective time management, and deep engagement with the course material. The University of Mpumalanga underlined the importance of community engagement.

“Getting my work recognised at an international level not only validated my research efforts but also enhanced my skills in scientific writing and peer collaboration."

Beyond academics, Mashamba made substantial contributions to the scientific community, publishing two articles in international journals. Additionally, he participated in the UMP First Experience Tutorship Programme, where he mentored first-year students, developing strong leadership and communication skills in the process.

Mashamba’s upbringing was marked by humble beginnings. Raised by supportive parents who emphasised the importance of education, Mashamba’s academic pursuits have always been driven by a desire to uplift his family and community.

“My parents motivated and assisted me with everything I needed along my academic journey,” Mashamba shared. “Their support is one of the things that keeps me going and working very hard to change my family background.”

His journey from a small rural village to graduating Cum Laude with an MSc Degree is an inspiring story of resilience, hard work, and the transformative power of education.
