UMP Appoints Dr Bernard Sebake as Dean of Students
The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Bernard Sebake as the Dean of Students, effective 01 September 2026.
 
Dr Sebake has extensive experience in higher education student affairs. In this role, he will advance UMP's commitment to strengthening students' welfare and development, creating a positive life outside lecture rooms.
 
Before joining UMP, Dr Sebake served as Dean of Student Affairs at the Central University of Technology in the Free State, where he reconfigured Student Affairs to provide high-impact support and expose students to the rapidly changing world of work.
 
His previous roles include Student Development Practitioner at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), Director for Student Governance and Development at Nelson Mandela University (NMU), and Head of Department for Student Governance and Leadership Development at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).
 
Earlier in his career, he served as Student Development Manager at Technikon Pretoria, now Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), where he spent seven years building his career in Student Affairs and Services. He also participated in workstreams that supported the merger leading to TUT's establishment, particularly in policy development and systems that helped shape a new institutional identity.
 
Dr Sebake is a known scholar and political analyst in the niche areas of public administration, governance, policy, student services and youth development. He is currently the Secretary General of the South African Association of Senior Student Affairs Professionals (SAASSAP).
