2019 Orientation

The 2019 orientation was power packed with useful and informative sessions for the new in take of students. The week was full of activities as new learners were welcomed and taken through the university life by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Thoko Mayekiso, Deputy Vice Chancellor: Academic, Professor Richard Bernard, Student Dean: Dr Paul Maminza and more staff members.



LETTER FROM THE VICE CHANCELLOR

Welcome to our first newsletter of 2019. I'm pleased that we have established a form of communication that will keep you informed and updated on the latest news at UMP.



SUCCESSFUL REGISTRATIONS

The mood was upbeat and positive at this year's registration and the turn out great as the university received 3331 students, a 20% increase from 2018. The registrar, Mr Sello Legodi said: "As we refine our processes, challenges are minimised and smooth systems are experienced. With all stakeholders working together for the benefit of UMP, we offered better service and student experience is increased."



UMP SIGNS STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS

Professor Alexander Brem from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg in Germany met with Vice Chancellor, Professor Thoko Mayekiso, and Deputy Vice Chancellor: Academic, Professor Richard Bernard, academic leaders and staff from Development Studies, Commerce and the Humanities Departments to discuss strategic areas for collaborations between the two institutions.



VICE CHANCELLOR SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT THRIVES

UMP celebrates Confidence Ndlovu, the recipient of the prestigious Vice Chancellor Scholarship who was awarded the Abe Bailey Trust and Travel Bursary. The learner went to the UK to spend time with students from other parts of the world. She shares her learning journey and experience.



UMP AWARDS RESEARCH EXCELLENCE

Professor Tarombera Mwabvu from the Faculty of Biology and Sciences whose research on the diversity of soil and invertebrates received was awarded at an intimate ceremony organized by the University Research Department. "This research has contributed to our understanding of the diversity and distribution of soil organisms and their important ecological role in the environment," said Professor Mwabvu.



MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY COLLABORATES WITH UMP

The University of Mpumalanga has recognised excellence in research during an intimate award ceremony, where Professor Tarombera Mwabvu and Dr Oswald Mhlanga were honoured for their outstanding research work.



VICE CHANCELLOR BAGS BIG APPOINTMENT

Vice Chancellor Professor Thoko Mayekiso was appointed as the Chairperson of the Research and Innovation Strategy Group (RISG) from 2019 to 2021. Professor Mayekiso will also be a member of the Executive Committee (EXCO) of USAf for the same period. "I'm looking forward to represent UMP in these new roles in higher education and continue to increase our footprint nationally and internationally," said Professor Mayekiso after her appointment.
