Dr Bongani Mwale
Dr Bongani June Mwale is an economist, scholar and governance professional with extensive leadership experience spanning climate policy, higher education, skills development, innovation, research and public-sector administration.
He served as a Commissioner of South Africa’s Presidential Climate Commission from 15 December 2020 to 28 February 2025. The Commission is an independent multistakeholder body established by the President of the Republic of South Africa, His Excellency President Cyril Ramaphosa, to oversee and facilitate the country’s just and equitable transition towards a low-emissions and climate-resilient economy.
Dr Mwale serves as the Chairperson of the Council of Ehlanzeni TVET College, having been appointed by the Minister of Higher Education and Training for a term extending to 22 April 2029. He previously served as Chairperson of the Council of Gert Sibande TVET College from 2019 to 2024, where he contributed to positioning the institution as a model African TVET college and centre of excellence.
Dr Mwale obtained a PhD in Management of Technology and Innovation in 2022. His doctoral research, titled “The Success of Business Incubation Support among Small, Medium and Micro-Enterprises in the South African Tourism Sector,” culminated in the development of the SMME Incubation Sustainability Framework, which has been adopted by several TVET college centres for entrepreneurship and incubation.
He also holds a Master of Business Administration, an Honours degree in Supply Chain Management, a Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management and a Diploma in Business Management. His further professional qualifications cover sourcing and supply management, forensic and investigative auditing, finance, municipal finance and supply chain management.
As an academic and researcher, Dr Mwale supervises master’s degree students and serves as an external examiner for postgraduate research. He is widely published in reputable peer-reviewed journals, with his scholarship covering artificial intelligence, economics and development, governance, STEM education, entrepreneurship, innovation and the management of technology. His academic work is informed by a strong commitment to developing practical and contextually relevant solutions to Africa’s educational, socioeconomic and institutional challenges.
