Mr Cyril Ramaphosa

Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa is the Chancellor of the University of Mpumalanga from 4th of April 2016. He is also the President of the Republic of South Africa from 15 February 2018.   

Mr Ramaphosa was elected the Chairperson of the Constitutional Assembly and became responsible for overseeing the drafting of the Constitution of the Republic of  South Africa. He was appointed the Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa on 25  May 2014.

He was a member of the United Nations Global Leadership Group that advised the Secretary General’ Special Representative on Business and Human Rights. He served as the first Deputy Chairman of the Commonwealth Business Council and the Vice Chairman of the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS. He was the Deputy Chairperson of the National Planning Commission in 2010, the body that was established to create a long term national development plan for South Africa. He established the Shanduka Group as a black owned investment holding company. 

Mr Ramaphosa completed his schooling at Mphaphuli High School at Sibasa in 1971. He  studied and completed law at the University of South Africa (UNISA) in 1981. He received numerous awards, honorary doctorates from several Universities, i.e. University of Natal; University of Venda; University of Port Elizabeth; University of Cape Town; University of Lesotho; University of Massachusetts (USA). He was a visiting Professor of Law at Stanford University in the United  States.

He received the Olof Palme prize in Stockholm in 1987 and was included among the Time's 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2007.

In 2009, he was awarded the National Order of the Baobab by President Jacob Zuma for his contribution to the multiparty negotiations and for chairing the Constitutional Assembly to draft the new Constitution.

He is involved in education through the Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation, that provides financial support for further education.
