This year's Women's Month celebration embraced the theme: "A Decade of Excellence and Creating Opportunities." Professor Mayekiso spoke passionately about the significance of this theme. "In this momentous year that marks UMP's 10th anniversary since its inception in 2013, our chosen theme resonates deeply. The essence lies in acknowledging the excellence we've embodied over the last decade and recognising the avenues of opportunity that UMP has unfurled."

Professor Mayekiso's words were a call to action, echoing the formidable spirit of women. She unflinchingly addressed the persistence of patriarchal norms and gender bias, urging women to rise above challenges. "Our identity as UMP women is defined by unwavering determination and the courage to face adversities. 'Never ever give up' must be our resounding anthem."

In her resonant address, Professor Mayekiso emphasised the ongoing struggle for women's rights and empowerment. Breaking the shackles of societal constraints is vital to empower the future generation of women. "Emancipation isn't granted; it is claimed. We carve our space, envisaging our journey with a lens of equality, justice, and fairness."

Professor Mayekiso evoked the indomitable strength that defines women. She observed, "Throughout history, women have stood resilient, unyielding in their faith and fortitude. These strengths propel us towards the zenith of our potential."

The event provided a platform for UMP women to share their stories of growth and inspiration. Deputy Registrar Ms. Nokukhanya Shongwe defined excellence in admissions, highlighting the tireless team effort to meet 2023's admission targets. Ms. Shongwe pondered on how UMP women could become paragons of excellence in their spheres, advocating introspection and support amongst each other.

Professor Thandeka Sabela, a beacon of leadership as a Senior Lecturer, celebrated Women's Day's broader meaning – a tribute to the pioneers who paved the way for gender equality. "We salute those who've marched ahead, proving that women can lead, and men can follow. It's incumbent upon us, as women leaders, to stand united, fostering achievements and resilience."

Professor Sabela paid a special tribute to the Vice-Chancellor, acknowledging her pivotal role in uplifting UMP's women. She encapsulated the essence of leadership, "True leadership stems from support and mentorship. Our Vice-Chancellor has illuminated the path, allowing us to stride confidently."

Ayanda Mhlonga, an Administrative Assistant, spoke emotively about the opportunities UMP extended to her. She highlighted Professor Mayekiso's unwavering belief in her potential, a catalyst for her growth. Participating in institutional projects, including reviewing the UMP Vision 2022 Strategic Plan and crafting the Vision 2030 Strategic Plan, equipped her with strategic insights and self-assuredness.

The event was punctuated with performances by UMP women—musical renditions, evocative poetry, and mesmerising traditional dances by the Tsonga Dancers and Amaqobokazana. The celebration underscored the multifaceted prowess of UMP women, uniting artistry with empowerment.

The Annual Women's Breakfast stood as a testament to UMP's commitment to nurturing a culture of empowerment and growth. Professor Mayekiso's resounding call to persevere, leverage strengths, and uplift one another reverberated, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all present. In the spirit of the event's theme, UMP women departed inspired, armed with a decade of excellence and a vision for continued progress.

The main purpose of the Open Day was to give learners more insight into the programs offered by the University, introduce them to the available sporting activities, and acquaint them with UMP's facilities.

The University showcased all its faculties, with each school offering a detailed explanation of the programs available to prospective students. Closing dates for applications and admission requirements were also communicated to the learners.

Morakane Lambert Letsoalo shared insights about the Bachelor of Agriculture in Agricultural Extension and Rural Resource Management program, outlining the requirements and post-graduation job opportunities for Agricultural Extension. Letsoalo further highlighted the advantages of studying Agricultural Extension at UMP, stating,

"Our university is located in the Lowveld, surrounded by agriculture, and many farmers lack access to technology and research information. With an Extension office, knowledge and information can be transferred to farmers using accessible language."

UMP staff members shared information with the learners. 

Ms. Sinazo Matyila, a UMP Lecturer in ICT and E-Learning Specialist, along with her team, presented information about the programs in the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences. The team also demonstrated an Application (APP) developed by UMP students.

Matyila explained, "Two of our students showcased applications, ranging from gamification to machine learning, including mobile applications. One of the applications demonstrated is a web-based point-of-sale application. They guided students through the development process and demonstrated how to navigate menus to initiate development."

Matyila further elaborated, "Being a skilled application developer requires being a proficient business analyst who comprehends problem specifications. You must understand user needs and translate them into code. This role bridges the gap between developers and business analysts."

Learners’ Perspectives

Aphile Duma, a Grade 11 learner from Imemeza Secondary School in Waterval Boven, shared her experience, stating, "I appreciate the university's diverse programs for both Commercial and Science streams. The availability of programs like the Bachelor of Conservation, which aligns with physical science and Mathematics studies, caught my attention. The university's infrastructure is impressive, featuring volleyball, netball, and basketball courts. I aspire to study here."

Sizwe Phakathi, another learner from Nganana Secondary School in Amsterdam, expressed excitement about UMP's accessibility and prestige. Phakathi praised UMP for aiding students with financial constraints and offering diverse programs like Bachelor of Science, encompassing ecology, environmental science, geography (including GIS), entomology, and integrated water studies.

Phakathi enjoyed the visit and recommended UMP as a well-established institution for self-discovery and achieving dreams.

Adnan Chheliya, a Grade 11 learner from Valencia Combined School, described the University of Mpumalanga as enriching, saying, "Engaging with the Educational representatives provided answers to my queries. My classmates also found the information from prospective representatives satisfying. UMP is a splendid institution, and I encourage those in my stream to consider applying."

UMP Marketing Officer, Kealeboga Marole, commended the impressive attendance, noting learners' strong presence, some accompanied by parents. Marole emphasized UMP's distinctive programs tailored to market demand, along with its state-of-the-art facilities.

The University also supports student groups and services, as well as a range of recreational activities, including sports and cultural engagement.

I take this opportunity to pay homage and extend a deep sense of gratitude to the visionaries who took that very first step, such as Dr Enos Mabuza, Dr William Ndlala, Prof David Mabunda, Prof.Selby Ripinga, Prof  JP Shongwe, Mr DD Mabuza, Mr Irvin Phenyane, and many others”.

Before assuming her position as the first VC of the University of Mpumalanga in November 2014, Prof Mayekiso attained experience in various academic and leadership roles over three decades from several institutions. In her sterling academic career, Prof Mayekiso has held positions of Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, Professor, Head of Department, and Vice Dean at the then-University of Transkei (Walter Sisulu University).

She then joined the University of the Witwatersrand, where she served as Head of School, Deputy Dean, and then Acting Executive Dean in the Faculty of Humanities. She proceeded to the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in 2007, as an Executive Dean in the Faculty of Arts, and then Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Engagement.

Prof Mayekiso acknowledged that establishing a new University had its own fair share of challenges. However, the support that she received from the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Dr Blade Nzimande, the Council, members of the Management Committee (MANCO), students, staff members, and members of the community contributed positively to the establishment and growth of the UMP.

Prof Mayekiso attributes the success of UMP to effective teamwork, dedication, and collegiality of MANCO. The VC further expressed her gratitude to staff members and students for their contribution to the Pioneering Journey of UMP.   

In reflecting on the progress that UMP has made, Prof Mayekiso referred to her inaugural speech in May 2015 when she made the commitment to build a Comprehensive University that mirrors a post-apartheid institution and said “Pioneers have to build a firm foundation, mindful that what they are creating should be durable, marketable, sustainable, and enduring. Generations yet unborn must find a thriving University, one they will be proud to join, because we who pioneered it, laid a firm foundation, and got into this immense project with body, mind, and soul”.

Prof Seepe spoke about the remarkable journey and great strides the institution has made.

According to Prof Mayekiso, some of the notable achievements in UMP’s Pioneering Journey and as a testament to a Decade of Excellence and Creating Opportunities include the following:

• As an engaged University, UMP placed great emphasis on partnerships and collaborations as drivers and enablers of achieving our vision. Over the 10 years, UMP has established 32 partnerships with international Universities, 11 in Europe, 4 in North America, 9 in Asia, 8 in Africa, and 2 in Australia.
• The success of the ENACTUS programme has been the pride of UMP, to date the UMP Enactus Team has won 32 trophies from national competitions. In 2022, the UMP ENACTUS team came second out of 21 institutions that competed.
• 220 VC scholarships have been awarded since 2016, covering full tuition, accommodation, meals, learning materials allowance, monthly stipends, and personal development.
• As part of growing its own timber, some of the students who started with their first qualifications at UMP are now doing Master’s and Doctoral degrees. UMP has appointed some of them as Academic Talent Stewardship Fellows and Associate Lecturers.
• UMP has achieved a Pass rate ranging from 80 - 85 % over the years.
• UMP has graduated 4, 485 students since its establishment.
• UMP has been awarded the National Research Foundation (NRF) Excelleration Award which acknowledges South African research institutions for achieving the most improved research performance.
• NRF-Rated Researchers have increased from 1 in 2024 to 13 in 2023.
• 47% of UMP academic staff members have Doctoral Degrees.
• UMP enrolments have increased from 169 students in 2014 to 8,442 in 2023.
• UMP academic offerings have increased from 3 in 2014 to 65 in 2023.
• UMP staff complement has increased from 12 in 2014 to 595 in 2023.
•  UMP has received an unqualified (clean) audit opinion for the ninth consecutive years, from 2014 to 2022.  
• UMP boasts some of the most iconic infrastructure of a university in our country to support the academic project.
   

The event was well attended by students, academics, staff, and external guests.

In closing, Professor Mayekiso quoted her 2015 inaugural speech when she said, “For our sake, and for the sake of generations yet unborn, let us join hands, to build a relevant, creative, innovative, and entrepreneurial University, which will serve the needs of this province, those of South Africa, then Africa, and indeed, those of the world generally”.

In responding to the keynote address of Prof Mayekiso, Higher Education Consultant and former Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Zululand, Professor Sipho Seepe, commended the VC and her team for their unwavering commitment to building UMP to be what is it today.

“The imperative of constructing UMP for future generations carries significant weight. It goes with saying that there is a need to safeguard this institution and build on its successes given the solid foundation that has been laid by Prof Mayekiso and her team,” said Prof Seepe.

Congratulating the teams, Vice-Chancellor Professor Thoko Mayekiso said, "Your unwavering efforts, dedication, commitment, and sacrifices have yielded tangible results. As we commemorate a decade of excellence, you exemplify our vision in multiple ways. Congratulations and keep up the good work!"

Addressing the UMP choir and ENACTUS, Professor Mayekiso acknowledged their outstanding contributions and noted that the exceptional performances of these teams resonate across the UMP community.

"It's heartening to gather today and share in this celebration. Emerging victorious from tough competition is truly commendable and speaks volumes about the exceptional qualities within our institution. 

Through your exceptional performances, you've added immense value to our institution. You've imprinted the essence of excellence throughout UMP, enhanced our reputation, and inspired a broader UMP community. Your accomplishments reflect qualities like discipline, dedication, and determination."

Professor Mayekiso added, "From personal experience, I know that with determination, challenges can be overcome. These special moments of celebration are gratifying. Amidst our celebrations, let's not forget the sacrifices participants made—endless hours of practice and preparation. I understand that many of you spent your recess time on campus, missing the comforts of home and patiently following the conductor's lead."

UMP Vice-Chancellor Prof Mayekiso congratulates ENACTUS President, Mr Moses Temana.

ENACTUS Coordinator (Faculty Advisor), Professor Ferdinand Niyimbanira, extended his congratulations and gratitude. "You have demonstrated that it's through hard work, dedication, and pushing beyond limits that excellence is achieved. Our society faces various challenges – unemployment, high crime rates, healthcare disparities, access to clean energy, food security, waste management, service delivery issues, and more."

Professor Niyimbanira further emphasized, "We must not turn a blind eye to these challenges; instead, we should actively seek solutions. We must be proactive. Where challenges exist, we should perceive opportunities. We must define ourselves by how we contribute to overcoming these societal issues. I encourage every Enactus member to consider becoming a social entrepreneur or an 'Enviropreneur,' focusing on environmental challenges."

In addition to their three trophies, Professor Niyimbanira received a nomination as one of the five African representatives in the Global Faculty Research Network (GFRN) of Enactus. This network acts as an advisory body, collaborating to share the knowledge and expertise of Enactus Global Faculty. It aims to foster a global research network and provide insights for innovative strategies and events that recognize and reward faculty advisors' contributions to Enactus.

"I'm honoured and humbled by the nomination, especially considering the presence of faculty advisors from 10 African countries within Enactus. This nomination validates the work of Enactus UMP and serves as motivation," commented Professor Niyimbanira.

Professor Mayekiso congratulates UMP Choir Master, Mr Lonny Mokoena.

Student Governance Manager, Mr Joseph Mokwatala, shared the UMP choir's background. "Established in 2016 with 25 choristers under Choir Master Mr Shongwe's leadership until 2021, the choir thrived. From 2022, former student Lonny Mokoena assumed the role of Choir Master, leading to a substantial increase in choristers."

He continued, "This year, the university granted the choir the opportunity to participate in the 3rd Dr. S.J. Khosa NPC Choral Music Eisteddfod Competition. The students dedicated extensive time and effort, practicing from morning until midday daily leading up to the competition. With the University's support, we arrived in style, accompanied by our elegant bus and distinctive uniforms. The choir dazzled the stage with their unique attire.

We secured the first position for the prescribed song, won 'best-dressed choir,' and proudly took home the overall best choir trophy. Today's celebration is a testament to the university's support, the choir's dedication, and the collective commitment," concluded Mr Mokwatala.

The inauguration of the UMP SWEEP Chapter was launched under the University of Mpumalanga Centre for Entrepreneurship Rapid Incubator (UMPCFERI), after a three-day SWEEP Chapters Executive Workshop, which was held at the University of Johannesburg (UJ).

The primary objective of SWEEP is to equip female students for entrepreneurial pursuits in the face of Gender-based Violence (GBV) and the underrepresentation of women in entrepreneurship.

UMP coordinator, Esihle Lukashe, said the launch marked the initiation of a sequence of tailored events designed to advance and nurture women entrepreneurs and cultivate a deeper understanding of business. 

“This Chapter will play a pivotal role in the economic engagement of UMP students. It aims to empower female students with adaptable and valuable skills, coupled with hands-on learning opportunities." 

Abe Bailey Fellow, Precious Mamogobo attended the three-day SWEEP Chapters Executive Workshop, which was held at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), said the launch provided insights, with students benefiting from a panel discussion involving business leaders and mentors.

“We deliberated on self-confidence issues, empowerment of women, and the challenges faced by women in leadership roles,” she said.

Ng’thabiseng Mpanza, founder of Her First, a startup striving to offer women affordable and sustainable menstrual products, emphasized that SWEEP acknowledges the distinctive hurdles women often face in business and takes proactive measures to address them.

“Aspiring entrepreneurs gained access to insights from experienced industry professionals. The mentors present  offered valuable guidance on various business aspects, from crafting business plans to navigating marketing strategies and financial management.”

UMP female entrepreneurs were motivated during the launch of the SWEEP Chapter in August.

Power of Networking

SWEEP  urges universities to establish a networking and safe space for female entrepreneurs to confront the obstacles posed by gender inequalities and limited female representation. Workshops and training sessions cover diverse topics pertinent to female entrepreneurs.

Mpanza noted that some of the covered topics could include ideation, product development, market research, branding, and effective communication.

“Equipped with these workshop-honed skills, student women entrepreneurs are better prepared to transform innovative ideas into thriving enterprises. Networking is instrumental in this process. Women entrepreneurs can connect with like-minded peers, potential collaborators, and mentors. A robust network opens doors to collaborations, partnerships, and business growth. Events, conferences, and online platforms are invaluable in this regard.”

Mpanza believes the UMP Chapter will address issues like self-esteem and imposter syndrome that some women entrepreneurs may be grappling with.

“Student women entrepreneurs can foster the confidence required to overcome barriers and excel in the business world. Ultimately, our SWEEP Chapter serves as a comprehensive ecosystem, equipping student women entrepreneurs with the skills, knowledge, connections, and confidence needed to succeed in their entrepreneurial pursuits." 

Melody Chiume highlighted that the Chapter will provide support while fostering a sense of sisterhood among emerging young businesswomen at UMP. The program will also inspire and guide young women toward economic development.

“In the Chapter, we'll also emphasize personal growth, self-awareness, and holistic development of the whole woman as a multifaceted being. We'll facilitate women's mental strength and wellness programs, establishing sturdy foundations to combat gender-based inequalities and abuse,” she detailed.

Madonsela's academic pursuit addresses a pressing global concern: water pollution. With the world grappling with the mounting challenge of securing clean and sufficient water resources, her focus centres on the reservoir. Here, she meticulously studies the fluctuations in algal biomass, intricately linked with the dynamics of nutrients.

Having already achieved a BSc in Environmental Science, Madonsela's commitment is unwavering. She holds a strong interest in deciphering water quality intricacies and tracing pollution sources within freshwater ecosystems – an interest that fuels her drive for an in-depth BSc Honours research project.

"I was drawn to the University of Mpumalanga reservoir because of its untapped potential for algal bloom research. It is an area that hasn't been extensively explored. This reservoir provides fertile ground for me to make new discoveries, enriching the available knowledge for future researchers."

Madonsela's research intends to intricate the processes behind algal growth and seeks to explore the various applications of these aquatic resources. Her work aligns with gaining fundamental insights and formulating sustainable strategies for maintaining balanced algal ecosystems.

"At the core of my study is the current water crisis," Madonsela emphasizes. "In a world where effective water management is critical, my research aims to contribute toward solutions. I believe research cultivates curiosity and academic excellence - an aspect I'm committed to pursuing."

Madonsela hails from a Mpumalanga village called Ekulindeni. Her journey is a testament to unwavering determination. "Growing up with limited resources and minimal career guidance, I persevered because I envisioned a better future. As I discovered my affinity for outdoor activities and nature, I charted my path.

My passion crystallized when I applied for environmental sciences during my matric year. UMP's acceptance marked the start of my journey to transform aspirations into reality."

Environmental science, encompassing elements from biology to chemistry, equips her to tackle contemporary challenges—whether it's climate change, pollution, or resource depletion.

With her Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences attained in 2023, Madonsela's ambitions burn brighter than ever. "My undergraduate years were dedicated to this cause," she reflects. "I chose environmental sciences because I believe in combatting global warming and nurturing our planet."

Looking ahead, Madonsela envisions honing her skills through training programs and collaborations with non-profit organizations. Her adaptable approach will steer her budding career, contributing to sustainable solutions that resonate across generations.

UMP students seized the opportunity to engage with over 40 organisations and potential employers, and discussed potential employment prospects in their respective academic disciplines.

The expo was organised by the UMP Engagement Division. Ms. Patience Motha, stated, "At the career expo companies partake to ensure comprehensive representation of all university programmes. We are greatly satisfied with the turnout of students and companies that graced this expo. Given that classes are now predominantly conducted online, it is noteworthy that a majority of students, both from on and off campus, participated."

Mr Patrick Motsweni, a representative from the Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition, which focuses on fostering innovation and technology, shared, "Our focus lies in supporting small businesses and innovators who are crafting novel product processes. We assist them in transitioning from the conceptual stage to the prototyping stage. Once they achieve a prototype, we enroll them in a program aimed at launching and sustaining the product in the market."

Mr Motsweni highlighted that the company also extends grants, "We offer grants that bolster small businesses, capping at a maximum of R700 000. This funding aids in commercialising products or introducing them to the market. Our programs encompass grassroots innovation facilitation schemes and smacks."

UMP Students engaged with potential employers during the Career Expo.

He added, "We champion projects holding robust intellectual property rights in taking their products to market. We offer grants of up to R 10 million for two rounds of support. The initial round offers a ceiling of R7 million, followed by the second round with a ceiling of R3 million. Our department's responsibilities span agro-processing, clothing and textiles, and automotive industries. While we offer an array of services, our primary focus is on innovation."

The DTIC opportunities are slated for advertisement on the website towards the year's end, with intake commencing the subsequent year.

Based in Mataffin, the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) boasts 18 parks, including Makhonja Mountain. A representative from MTPA conveyed, "Our presence at the Career Expo is aimed at showcasing our expertise in conservation, environmental science, and tourism, presenting opportunities such as becoming a tour guide. Our focus is primarily on enlightening students, especially those pursuing conservation and tourism, about our offerings at MTPA."

"We strive to furnish students with information about the courses pertinent to their pursuit of tourism. For instance, if they intend to embark on a journey in tourism, we provide insights into the various tourism opportunities available at MTPA, as well as other avenues within the conservation realm."

UMP Honours in Psychology student, Blue Mudzunga, attended the expo to broaden her horizons and gain awareness of unexplored opportunities. She shared, "I learned that the market brims with numerous opportunities, yet many individuals miss out due to lack of motivation and interest. The expo proved invaluable as I identified several organisations that could provide me with opportunities, so far the Correctional Services' programs tailored to my course particularly caught my attention," she added.

Lesego Mashego, a  Bachelor of Arts student planning to major in communication studies or archaeology, shared his insights on the career expo, "I attended in pursuit of bursary opportunities or potential leadership roles tailored to students in my field. I encountered a few offerings from ABSA, which were among the most compelling opportunities of the day.

The expo's atmosphere was enriching; I was unaware of the extent of organisations keen on recruiting students into the professional realm. Overall, the experience was enlightening, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time."

Ms. Motha further expressed, "I extend my appreciation to all the companies that honoured the invitation. Additionally, we actively encourage more companies to engage with the university, interact with students, provide insights into available opportunities, and offer career guidance."

SAAPAM is a body that focuses on promoting sound governance practices in state administration. The association boasts a diverse membership encompassing both academic and government spheres across South Africa. Additionally, SAAPAM publishes the distinguished Journal of Public Administration, renowned for its cutting-edge research with substantial scholarly and policy implications.

The decision to extend Dr. Molepo's term comes after a comprehensive evaluation process, during which his outstanding leadership skills, expertise in Public Affairs, and unwavering commitment to advancing the discipline were duly acknowledged.

"I'm deeply honoured by my reappointment. It underscores the confidence that the National Board of SAAPAM has in my role as the Executive Director. Alongside this Board, we have worked tirelessly to elevate the association to new heights," said Dr. Molepo.

During his initial term as the Executive Director of SAAPAM, Dr. Molepo significantly expanded the association's membership, including greater participation of women in its programs and activities. Dr. Molepo's leadership also led to internal initiatives for optimizing cash flow, thus ensuring the association's financial stability. With a wealth of experience gained from various roles within SAAPAM, he brings a valuable blend of expertise, skills, and insights.

"This is evident in our recent conference, where we collaborated with esteemed partners like the National School of Government, the Department of Public Service and Administration, and the Department of Monitoring and Evaluation. Together, we initiated policies aimed at fostering discourse between academics and practitioners on governance matters influencing state administration," Dr. Molepo explained.

Renowned for his professionalism, Dr. Molepo consistently upholds the highest standards of public administration and management practices in South Africa. Under his guidance in his prior role, SAAPAM flourished, achieving remarkable growth and success. Dr. Molepo's strategic acumen drove innovative initiatives, encouraging collaboration, and fostering continuous improvement within the public sector.

Strategic Insights

Throughout his tenure, SAAPAM broadened its global presence, forming partnerships with international organizations to facilitate knowledge exchange on optimal practices in public affairs. The association also organized seminars, research workshops, and conferences that significantly bolstered stakeholder relations. Dr. Molepo's mentorship in the publication series led to a notable increase in academic book releases.

"I collaborated with diverse stakeholders to bolster membership and promote student engagement within the association's activities. We emphasized the interaction between academics and practitioners. SAAPAM stands as one of South Africa's most prominent academic associations," explained Dr. Molepo.

SAAPAM President, Professor Kgothatso Shai, praised Dr. Molepo's contributions: "During his initial term, Dr. Molepo assumed the role of Executive Director at a pivotal juncture in our association's evolution, as indicated in our 2018 annual report. Particularly, SAAPAM anticipates Dr. Molepo's leadership in facilitating access to opportunities for young academics through bursaries and internships.

Prof Joseph Diescho's compelling lecture, titled "South Africa, still the epicentre of and for the reconstruction of Africa," offered a thought-provoking exploration of South Africa's ongoing significance within the broader context of African reconstruction and development.

Speaking to an attentive audience, which included the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Thoko Mayekiso, and other faculty members, academics, and students, Prof Diescho seamlessly weaved historical insights, modern challenges, and philosophical contemplation, all while encouraging introspection and unity.

Commencing his discourse by drawing upon the wisdom of historical figures, Prof Diescho emphasized the importance of approaching interactions with fellow African leaders from a perspective of fraternal consciousness, rather than adopting roles that may breed condescension.

Quoting President Julius Kambarage Nyerere's advice to avoid playing "Big Brother" or "Small Brother," Prof Diescho resonated with the need to foster relationships founded on mutual respect and understanding. He highlighted that such an approach contributes significantly to the unity of the continent.

 From the Berlin Conference to Ubuntu

Delving into history, Prof Diescho meticulously dissected the aftermath of the infamous Berlin Conference of 1884-1885. This conference, which arbitrarily divided Africa among European powers, left an indelible scar on the continent's unity. Prof Diescho accentuated the profound resonance of South Africa's unique identity, forged amidst the fragmentation caused by colonial powers.

"Revisiting the aftermath of the 1884 Berlin Conference is essential to comprehend South Africa's role in the continental context. European powers' partitioning of Africa redefined its identity and geopolitical landscape. The ensuing emergence of distinct nations, labelled as South Africans or East Africans, marked a disconnection from the broader African identity."

Transitioning to the concept of Ubuntu, Prof. Diescho elaborated on its significance, exploring its gradual erosion due to the advent of private property ownership and evolving societal dynamics. He artfully balanced the tensions between individual ownership and the communal ethos encapsulated by Ubuntu.

Afrophobia vs. Xenophobia: Unmasking Identity Struggles

A segment of Prof. Diescho's lecture unveiled the nuanced differences between Afrophobia and xenophobia. He introduced the term Afrophobia to shed light on the identity crisis faced by numerous African residents, leading to divisive perceptions and simmering tensions.

In his compelling lecture, Prof Diescho urged reflection on the foundational identity challenges that underpin these issues. He implored the audience to collectively examine how Africans perceive both themselves and each other.

"Let us momentarily address the tempestuous issue of xenophobia. The current narrative often portrays South Africans as hostile toward foreigners, an assertion grounded in some truth. Yet, a nuanced perspective is required to grasp the broader context. I posit that the phenomenon often termed xenophobia within South Africa is better understood as Afrophobia – a complex fear of fellow Africans."

"Tracing back to settler colonialism, we uncover the root of wounds borne by those who call this land home. This narrative perpetuates the notion that possessing a darker complexion necessitates justification for belonging. It's akin to being cast as a perpetual outsider."

Impact of self-development

Reflecting on the visionary aspirations of leaders such as Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki, Prof Diescho echoed the call for an African renaissance. He passionately urged South Africa to strengthen its governance systems, thereby nurturing pride, confidence, and active engagement in reshaping the destiny of the African continent. Drawing inspiration from Lao Tzu's teachings, he emphasized the profound impact of self-development and collective empowerment on shaping a harmonious and promising future.

As the lecture drew to a close, Prof Diescho seamlessly wove together historical accounts, philosophical insights, and contemporary challenges, illuminating South Africa's intricate role in African reconstruction. The lecture served as a resounding call for South Africans to embrace their distinctive heritage and become catalysts for positive transformation within the broader African narrative.

In reflecting upon the resonance of Prof. Diescho's lecture, one is reminded of South Africa's unwavering contributions to steering Africa's trajectory. The call to actively engage in the ongoing process of reconstruction and development reverberates resolutely, inviting each individual – particularly the youth – to play an indispensable role in shaping a brighter and more unified future for the continent.

ENACTUS is an international non-profit organisation focused on social entrepreneurship, headquartered in Springfield, Missouri, USA. It administers projects for university students through World Cup Competitions where each country is represented by its winning universities.

ENACTUS UMP was established in 2016 with a mere 12 members who participated in the national competition as observers. The subsequent year, in 2017, the team took part in the National Competition, securing fifth position out of 21 universities. This marked a historic achievement in the history of the University, as the team continued to excel at the national competition in the years to follow. 

The university management acknowledges the team's accomplishments through a ceremonial celebration after each national competition. Over the years, the student-led entrepreneurship and social innovation organisation has demonstrated unwavering determination despite formidable rivals. Their resourcefulness and dedication garnered them a fourth-place finish out of 16 universities in both 2018 and 2019, accompanied by the acquisition of five trophies.

The year 2020 posed challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting alterations in how ENACTUS operated, with national competitions taking place virtually. The UMP team embraced the "new normal," exemplifying the university's value of adaptability. In this transformed setting, the UMP team achieved a remarkable fourth-place position out of 16 universities and secured seven trophies.

In 2021, the team continued its exceptional performance, attaining fourth place out of 16 universities and winning six trophies. Notably, their achievements surpassed those of universities with longer participation in the ENACTUS competition.

In 2022, the UMP team reached new heights, securing four trophies and achieving second place. ENACTUS SA afforded the teams an opportunity to present student-owned businesses, fuelling greater enthusiasm among students. Notably, most team members had not attended nationals before, making this a significant challenge. Post-graduate students Moses Timana and Mfanelo Ndlovu, the experienced members who had previously participated in nationals, diligently trained the rest of the team.

In 2022, ENACTUS UMP embraced this challenge by encouraging team members to cultivate their enterprises through workshops, resulting in the establishment of six student-owned enterprises addressing diverse societal issues. These included business development, Gender-based Violence, food waste, university applications and internships, shoe cleaning, and post-harvest storage of fresh produce.

For the ENACTUS year, participating enterprises were required to meet specific criteria for the national exposition. These included alignment with the Global Sustainable Development Goals, registration with the Companies Intellectual Property Commission, registration with the South African Revenue Services, and affiliation with a financial institution. Furthermore, the enterprises had to be in their piloting phase, following the ENACTUS Road Map. Despite intense competition, the team secured fifth place and claimed three trophies.

Winning projects

A standout project undertaken by the ENACTUS UMP team since 2017 is the Hatching Hope Chicken Project, which involved distributing layer chickens and roosters to beneficiaries in the rural areas of Nkomazi and Mbombela local municipalities.

The university's commitment to nurturing graduates as innovative and entrepreneurial critical thinkers was put to the test in 2022. ENACTUS South Africa tasked the team with identifying businesses within their ranks to establish an enterprise with a sustainable and innovative impact.

Responding to this challenge, the team introduced the Travel to Trade Project in collaboration with Well of Wisdom Projects, founded by UMP post-graduate student, Siphesihle Shabalala. This project reinterpreted the ancient merchant tradition, capturing the entrepreneurial spirit of effecting change by promoting products and services that positively impact society.

In 2022, the winning team's enterprises, Charcool Climate, and Seller’s Chart, stood out. Charcool Climate developed cooling systems employing charcoal, fence, timber, and water to aid street vendors in Mbombela, maintaining temperatures 10°C lower than the ambient temperature. This innovation will reduce spoilage rates and prolong the shelf life of perishable goods.

Seller’s Chart excelled in the Regional Competition at the University of Johannesburg, earning a place among the top 12 teams at the National Exposition, ultimately securing the fifth position. Additionally, Charcool Climate achieved success in the 2022-23 Harmony Food & Health Security Challenge, ranking among the top six and receiving R12 000. They were further crowned the winner of this challenge, receiving an additional R15 000.

Seller’s Chart focuses on supporting informal businesses by providing comprehensive assistance, including business development, marketing strategies, and personalised consultation sessions. Their aim is to guide entrepreneurs in refining their vision and goals, ultimately leading them to success. Apart from consultation services, Sellers' Chart operates as an online advertising platform.

Institutional support

The ENACTUS team enjoys unwavering support from the University and its management. In 2017, the Vice-Chancellor sent the ENACTUS: UMP president, secretary, and coordinator (faculty advisor) to the ENACTUS World Cup in London, England, as observers to glean insights from other nations' practices. This decision significantly aided the team's progress, as evidenced by their accomplishments since 2017.

The team assisted beneficiaries in various ways, including training in various areas. Beneficiaries contributed hatched chicks, continuing the cycle as new beneficiaries received them. The team also spearheaded other social and entrepreneurial projects in rural Mpumalanga communities.

Former ENACTUS members continue to inspire the team, such as former President Confidence Ndlovu, now a lecturer and co-faculty advisor at UMP. Miss Ndlovu's journey serves as motivation, showcasing that the path they are on can lead to greater heights. The success of ENACTUS owes much to the guidance of faculty advisor Prof Ferdinand Niyimbanira, and Co-faculty Advisors Mr. Lukhele and Dr. Xola Nduku.
