Following a two-day meeting held at the Mbombela campus on 14 September 2023, the two institutions have formalised this collaboration by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The UMP delegation, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Thoko Mayekiso, included the DVC: Postgraduate Studies, Engagement, and Planning, Prof Mbewe, DVC for Research, Innovation, and Internalisation, Dr Stroebel, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Biology and Agriculture Prof Kutu, Dean of Students Dr Mamiza, and other senior academics.  

BUAN is a university providing higher education and training in agriculture, natural resources, and other allied and related subjects. The University aims to produce innovative graduates and technological solutions for sustainable development in agriculture and natural resources.

Speaking at the meeting, BUAN's Dean of the Faculty of Animal and Veterinary Sciences, Professor Othusitse Madibela, explained that the university offers close to 50 programmes, including Forestry, Ecology, and Agricultural Extension, Agricultural Economics, Animal Science, Plant Science, Agronomy streams, Food Science and Technology, among others.

“Our intention is to diversify our programmes, develop postgraduate training and innovation, including smart agriculture utilising technology," he stated.

Professor Fonso Kutu, Acting Dean at the School of Environmental Sciences at UMP, expressed his enthusiasm about the collaboration, emphasising that it will build upon and enhance the University's achievements over the past decade. He further highlighted that the scope of the collaboration is extensive, with student exchange programmes being a key component of the agreement.

“Our students can visit BUAN and learn about agriculture in Botswana, which differs from Mpumalanga due to its tropical climate. Similarly, their students can visit UMP and gain insights into agricultural practices outside of their own environment."

BUAN is also highly regarded for its livestock animal production expertise and has a farm. Professor Kutu pointed out, “These visits will be invaluable as our students will have the opportunity to observe the operations of a university-owned farm."

Professor Kutu also noted that some of the anticipated outcomes include jointly developing programmes and collaborating on the assessment of postgraduate theses and dissertations. Future projects encompass natural sciences and nature conservation, which both universities will plan together.

In its 10-year history, the University of Mpumalanga has successfully established partnerships, collaborations, and networks with national and international tertiary institutions and research institutions through executed Memoranda of Understanding/Agreements (MoU/MoA). These MoUs/MoAs are active with universities in South Africa, Africa, America, Australia, and Europe.

The biennial gathering united academics and students in the field, presenting cutting-edge research on politics in South Africa, Africa, and the wider world. The conference delved into a diverse array of topics within the discipline of politics and international relations.

The 16th Biennial Conference of SAAPS took a magnifying glass to pivotal local and global issues, including Community Participation, Service Delivery, and Leadership in Mpumalanga Municipalities, the Russia-Ukraine War and Africa, The African Continental Free Trade Area, The Resurgence of Military Coups, Africa and Migration, Big Data, Technology, and Pan Africanism, Foreign Policies of African Nations, and Climate Change and Environmental Politics.

Inaugurating the conference, UMP Vice-Chancellor, Professor Thoko Mayekiso, emphasised the auspicious timing of hosting this event in the midst of the University's 10th-anniversary celebrations. "To those joining us from beyond South Africa's borders, welcome to South Africa. To those journeying from beyond the Province of Mpumalanga, welcome to the land of the rising sun. The sun's rays symbolize vitality, warmth, and vigour for our University.

The staging of this Conference aligns seamlessly with UMP's institutional agenda commemorating our first decade. It is a distinct honour for UMP, as a fledgling university, to be entrusted with this conference.

We cherish such experiences as part of our Pioneering Journey, Luhambo Lwemhlahlandlela. We have been an integral part of this exhilarating pioneering venture since our establishment in 2013. This stands as a significant milestone for our University and the entire UMP community. We will be celebrating a decade of excellence and opportunity on the 3rd of November 2023," she declared.

Professor Mayekiso further noted that at the national level, the conference follows hot on the heels of South Africa’s successful hosting of the 15th BRICS Summit, which saw attendance from all member nations alongside representatives from 61 other countries. The economic importance of BRICS was underscored by President Cyril Ramaphosa, the University's former Chancellor, during the BRICS-Africa Outreach and BRICS plus Dialogue.

"As the African continent, we are steadfast in our resolve that the continent's substantial resources be harnessed for the benefit and advancement of Africa's populace. The conference themes encompass 'Russia-Ukraine War and Africa' and 'The African Continental.' There is a palpable synergy between the conference theme and our institution’s strategic trajectory," she added.

Socio-economic stratification and ethnicity

SAAPS President, Professor Kgothatso Shai, extended gratitude to UMP for hosting the conference. "For us, being here is not merely an assembly of academics in discourse. Rather, we come to be an integral part of the enduring legacy of the University of Mpumalanga, especially the evolution of the discipline of political science on this campus, and within the National Council."

He further clarified that the conference was convened to engender robust intellectual discourse on the theme of Africa in contemporary global politics. "You will observe that our presenters span from our very own students hailing from various universities locally and from different corners of the globe.

We are indeed optimistic that the intellectual contributions that emerge from this conference will significantly influence the substance and direction of Political Science performance at the University of Mpumalanga, as well as in other realms where the teaching and research of political science and international relations have yet to take deep root."

Delivering his keynote address, Professor Kwesi Kwaa Prah introduced the concept of ethno-nationality, addressing the close interplay of nationality and ethnicity to the point where ethnic solidarities impact people across the societal spectrum, from the most privileged to the most marginalized.

"Regardless of whether one is the wealthiest or the most impoverished individual on Earth, in terms of socio-economic stratification, ethnicity serves as a binding force. Components such as language, religion, traditions, and all cultural tenets unite individuals, transcending social stratification levels," he expounded.

"Class divisions tend to blur one's sense of direction. Dialectically, they represent opposing meanings. Yet, ethnicity is not cast in stone; under certain conditions, you will find an ethnic group within a particular class structure exerting preponderant influence," he observed.

Professor Prah went on to say, "Should we fail to harbour aspirations of being part of a multipolar world, suppose we remain divided as younger and older scientists, then we must earnestly work towards the unification of Africa. Failure to do so leaves us vulnerable to manipulation.

There is not a single country that forges ahead solely on the basis of a universally spoken language. Whenever you see a minority language dominating a majority in any society, you are confronted with either a colonial situation, a neo-colonial situation, or some form of Imperial domination."

Multi-disciplinary topics

SAAPS Vice President and Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Development & Business Sciences at the University of Mpumalanga, Professor Vusi Gumede, presided over the session entitled: "Climate Change and Environmental Politics." This session addressed topics such as the Interplay in the Conundrums of a Just Energy Transition in South Africa, Climate Change and Environmental Politics: Unpacking Water Governance in South Africa through the Use of the OECD Water Governance Toolkit, and Politics and Power: The Contested State and the Just Energy Transition in South Africa.

Prof Siphamandla Zondi led the session discussing Pan-Africanism and other ideologies. Dr Koli Matebese-Notshulwana chaired the session dedicated to the theme: "The African Continental Free Trade Area." Among the topics explored were:

• An Overview of Africa’s Economic Prosperity through the potential benefits of the African Continental Free Trade Area: An Afrocentric perspective.
• Reimagining trade relations and economic growth in Africa: Geopolitical fragmentation and foreign direct investment (FDI) fragmentation are projected risks for Africa.
• How pivotal is the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in driving frontier technology development in Africa?

In 2017, Professor Niyimbanira clinched the title of National ENACTUS: SA Senior Alumnus of the Year, a recognition that led him and the team president and secretary to the global stage in London for the world competition. Demonstrating unwavering dedication, he repeated his success in 2020 by securing, for the second time, the National ENACTUS: SA Faculty Advisor of the Year Award.

In a ceremony held on 19 September 2019 in Johannesburg, the Entrepreneurship Development in Higher Education (EDHE) of Universities South Africa (USAf) and the Department of Higher Education, Science, and Technology honoured Professor Niyimbanira as one of the nominees for his longstanding contribution to the entrepreneurial development of students.

"I’m committed to the promotion and advocating for entrepreneurship to students, and the immediate community served by UMP." 

His sphere of influence extends beyond UMP. He recently assumed a role as one of the five African representatives for the Global Faculty Research Network (GFRN) of ENACTUS. This network collaborates with the Enactus Global Headquarters, advising on policy matters. Comprising 15 Enactus Coordinators from the five Enactus regions: Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, and Eurasia. The network is a testament to his international impact.

Under his guidance, the ENACTUS team at UMP has initiated and managed entrepreneurship projects, yielding positive outcomes not only for the communities involved but also for the personal and professional growth of UMP students.

His engagement with ENACTUS seamlessly integrates his expertise as an educator, motivating students to channel their energy into improving lives, fortifying communities, and establishing entrepreneurial, self-sustaining ventures. Members of the ENACTUS: UMP team additionally acquire invaluable entrepreneurship skills, with some even venturing into their own businesses. Furthermore, UMP students who are part of the team gain immeasurable benefits from his mentorship, coaching, leadership, presentation, and communication skills.

Winning Formula

Professor Niyimbanira attributes the success of the ENACTUS team to the robust support system at UMP, particularly highlighting the backing from Vice-Chancellor Professor Thoko Mayekiso. "Her support, encouragement, leadership, and motivation drive the team to always aim for excellence," he adds.

"As future leaders, our students are the generation that should understand local, continental, and global socio-economic and environmental issues as well as how to address such challenges."

He draws inspiration from Joseph Schumpeter’s theory, emphasising the pivotal role entrepreneurs play in the development and deployment of new inventions. This theory underscores how entrepreneurs propel growth, innovation, and economic development.

"Working with ENACTUS is about deliberating on ways of including and empowering students for participation in the mainstream economy through skills development, enterprise development, and social entrepreneurship projects. More importantly, I strive to ignite students’ careers and talents. My dedication is about assisting students to transform their dreams into realities. I get very happy when students achieve their ultimate goals.”

His association with ENACTUS began in 2007, during his pursuit of a Master of Commerce degree. Fuelled by a fervent desire to effect social change through entrepreneurial action, he introduced ENACTUS (then known as Student In Free Enterprise = SIFE) and assumed the role of campus team leader while still a student at UKZN.

The journey took an exciting turn when his team clinched national championships in 2008 and 2009, representing the country in Singapore and Germany. Upon joining the Vaal University of Technology, he continued to spearhead the ENACTUS team, overseeing numerous community projects and earning several accolades.

"I wish to thank the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Mayekiso who trusted and requested me to establish the team at UMP in 2016 when I joined the University. That was an opportunity to contribute to the holistic growth of the students."

Championing Student Growth

Professor Ferdinand Niyimbanira is a dynamic, deeply committed academic with visionary ideas, particularly in the realm of student empowerment. Grounded in the theory of constructivism and centred around student-focused learning, his teaching philosophy fosters active participation through group discussions.

He believes in experiential learning as a means to unlock each student's full potential. Beyond the confines of the classroom, he sees Enactus as an instrumental force in creating an environment where all students can thrive.

"My teaching goal has always been to contribute towards the development of students by ensuring that they have the understanding, skills, and expertise to apply a holistic approach towards business activities, where possible, and research beyond their graduation."

Professor Niyimbanira is resolute in his mission to kindle students' careers and talents, finding immense joy in witnessing their accomplishments. "ENACTUS gives the opportunity to contribute in a positive way. When we compete to positively change the world, we all win."

His academic journey commenced in 2003 when he embarked on his Bachelor of Commerce at the University of KwaZulu Natal. Armed with a PhD in Economics, earned in 2014 from North-West University, and a wealth of experience accrued over the past 16 years, Professor Niyimbanira continues to shape the next generation of leaders through teaching, research, and community engagement.

UMP stood alongside some of the nation’s most accomplished researchers and scientists at a distinguished ceremony held in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, under the theme: "Celebrating 20 years of the SKA Project in South Africa."

The University of Mpumalanga clinched the NRF CEO’s Special Recognition Award, a distinction reserved for past recipients of the NRF Award. It stands as a testament to UMP's sustained progress and unwavering dedication to excellence in research performance, as evaluated against a set of crucial benchmarks.

Last year, UMP secured the NRF Excelleration Award, further underlining its dedication to advancing research excellence, as gauged against various performance metrics.

UMP’s research output has experienced a remarkable surge over recent years, boasting one of the highest research productivity rates per academic staff member in South Africa, as well as a notable proportion of academic staff holding PhDs.

Marking UMP’s 10th anniversary, this remarkable performance and advancement is a testament to the University’s dedication. The quality of NRF submissions is further evidenced by the annual escalation in funding and the substantial success rate of proposals. With over 8 400 students, including 600 at postgraduate level, UMP's commitment to growth and investment in research and innovation is commendable.

Prof Thoko Mayekiso, UMP Vice-Chancellor, expressed the University’s delight at the continued national recognition of its research profile, asserting, “Our rapid expansion and stringent quality assurance measures position the University to compete effectively and maintain a significant role in Mpumalanga Province, in South Africa, and on the international stage.”

Dr. Aldo Stroebel, the inaugural Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Internationalisation, affirmed that these awards honour and acknowledge UMP's strategic direction and impressive performance. He emphasised that the University remains resolute in its commitment to furthering its research capacity and capabilities.

HERS-SA is committed to the advancement and leadership development of women in the Higher Education sector. As a registered Non-Profit Organisation (NPO), HERS-SA has advocated for and contributed to the career and leadership development of women employed in the higher education sector through meticulously designed programmes.

Speaking on the reimagining of leadership, Professor Mayekiso highlighted factors such as the multi-polar world, shifting geopolitics, sustainable development goals, and the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR) as challenges and opportunities that inevitably impact higher education.

Among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, eradicating poverty, promoting good health and well-being, ensuring quality education, achieving gender equality, fostering decent work and economic growth, and advancing industry, innovation, and infrastructure lies at the heart of higher education.

“As we reimagine leadership in higher education, we need to be fully aware of the aforementioned and ground our discourse in the realities we have delineated. In many ways, reimagining is a crucial leadership competence to navigate the curveballs that invariably arise in the higher education sector." 

Professor Mayekiso went on to note that the 21st century is arguably the most complex. The rapid advancements in technology and globalization have added momentum to this complexity, and no single leader can solve all the problems.

“Beyond the capacity to solve intricate problems, a leader should be proficient in building effective teams and possess the ability to pose pertinent questions. Moreover, leaders should be guided by values. The new education must equip our students to excel in an ever-changing world. It must empower them to lead in innovation and not only adapt to the shifting world but also shape it.”

Mastering the new

She further elucidated that profound shifts in the environment necessitate the cultivation of new skills and habits, urging everyone, especially those in leadership roles, to embrace a learner’s mindset.

“It entails embracing the inherent discomfort of relinquishing the old in order to master the new. This necessitates re-imagining leadership, as advancements in technology have also redefined the modes of interaction in higher education information. Communication technologies have amplified institutional collaborations and given rise to new modes of delivering learning and teaching. Dual registrations in institutions spanning different countries and continents are now feasible.

Harnessing these technologies demands leadership capable of embracing the reality that we now inhabit a global village. The leadership challenge lies in finding ways to integrate global and local imperatives. ‘Glocal’ has emerged as a new term in our academic discourse. Without reimagining, we would fail to harness the potential of these technological advancements.”

Professor Mayekiso acknowledged the challenges university leaders have grappled with over the past decade. These include #FeesMustFall, accommodating financially needy yet academically deserving students, ensuring the relevance of universities in the African context, and addressing the repercussions of COVID-19.

She affirmed that principled leadership denotes leadership informed by one's values and ethics. “It aligns with the concept of authentic leadership. A principle constitutes a fundamental belief about how one should conduct oneself; it is a set of guiding principles. I am fortunate to have been involved in shaping UMP’s values. Consequently, they resonate with my own.”

We need to be courageous

She further acknowledged that society is still grappling with patriarchy and toxic masculinities, and leadership poses significant challenges for female leaders.

“Without advocating sexism in leadership, one must acknowledge the unique challenges faced by female leaders in higher education. This is precisely why, at present, we have only six female Vice-Chancellors out of a total of 26 universities in South Africa. In my leadership journey, I have benefited from the support of both my female and male colleagues.

The African continent requires robust institutions that are attuned to the new challenges it faces. Fostering, coaching, and mentoring other leaders is the way forward, with a bias towards producing more female leaders. Without intentional efforts in this direction, the glass ceiling will remain intact and impervious.

In this rapidly changing, globalised world, no leader has room for complacency. No leader is granted respite. Pressures on leaders remain unyielding, at times akin to an avalanche. Given the shifting landscape of higher education and the immense expectations and demands, leadership in higher education necessitates re-imagining and recalibration. The courage to rethink and re-imagine is paramount. We must keep our curiosity and inquisitive minds alive.”

The event, held at the Mbombela campus on 20 September, aimed to raise awareness and tackle issues related to gender-based violence and sexual harassment in institutions of higher education.

Addressing the audience, Professor Moses Mbewe, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Postgraduate Studies, Engagement, and Planning, emphasised that higher learning institutions have a crucial role in combatting gender-based violence. He stated, "Our role as a university extends beyond teaching and lecturing from books. We are tasked with providing a comprehensive education, particularly instilling in young men a deep respect for women and all members of society."

Professor Mbewe went on to highlight that the University of Mpumalanga mirrors broader South African society. He lamented, "Regrettably, what we witness on campus is often a reflection of the wider societal reality. Students and staff are integral parts of their communities. The issues we observe in these communities are replicated nationally and resonate within our universities and throughout all sectors of society."

He continued, "We encounter various facets of gender-based violence in our country. It is imperative that we unite against this scourge, whether in higher education, society at large, or any other arena where it festers, causing profound physical, mental, and economic harm, both in public and private spaces."

Speaking remotely from Sol Plaatjie University, Ms. Kim Maruping stressed the importance of bravery for victims of gender-based violence and urged them not to be afraid to report abuse. She firmly stated, "Never rationalise the actions of the perpetrator. Always ensure that you report it, even if it involves staff members or lecturers."

In a bid to empower victims, Ms. Maruping reassured them that they were not at fault for the violations they endured. "I want you to understand that it is not your fault that you were subjected to such a violation."

Mr. Mbongeni Mnisi, the Student Representative Council (SRC) President, expressed concern about university campuses becoming hotspots for sexual harassment and assaults. He asserted, "Sexual harassment infringes upon basic human rights and violates a person's dignity. It leaves lasting emotional scars that can detrimentally impact academic performance and lead to enduring trauma. No student should have to endure such abuse, either within or outside the campus. It is our moral duty to ensure a safe environment and confront this issue head-on."

Mr. Mnisi further advocated for the promotion of gender equality and consent within universities, stating, "As educators, students, and citizens, it is our responsibility to challenge deeply ingrained societal norms that foster an environment conducive to harassment. We must encourage open dialogues about consent, healthy relationships, and respectful conduct."

He stressed the significance of creating a supportive atmosphere that emboldens victims to seek justice and eradicate the stigma surrounding the reporting of sexual harassment incidents. He called for active bystander intervention, urging witnesses to step forward and report any form of harassment.

The event featured notable speakers such as Ms. Mbuyelo Maluleke, Chairperson of the Rainbow Alliance, and Mr. Mazwi Mgwenya from the GBV Student Association. Representatives from the local municipality, the Department of Social Services, and academics addressed issues related to sexual health, HIV, and Aids in higher education.

BOOST UP is a three-day startup support programme organised by the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), MLab, and Set Up a Start-Up. They collaborated and co-hosted a Pitching Master Class with the University of Mpumalanga Centre for Entrepreneurship Rapid Incubator (UMPCFERI), which aims to provide training and empower students in entrepreneurship.

The UMPCFERI invited three adjudicators to assist, namely Mr. Mmbadi, SEDA Ehlanzeni Branch Manager and CFERI Board Member, a Standard Bank Relationship Banker, and an Old Mutual Training Facilitator.

The workshop, held at the UMPCFERI Mbombela campus, commenced with training on the significance of resilience in entrepreneurs, showing how setbacks can be transformed into opportunities. Mr. McKevin Ayaba emphasised the transformative potential of collaboration, illustrating that when diverse minds come together, innovation thrives, and opportunities flourish. This underscores the importance of resilience in overcoming challenges and fostering a successful entrepreneurial journey.

On the third day, participants of the BOOST UP Workshop competed in a pitching competition, with two winners selected to pitch in Cape Town and potentially advance to Kenya. The event showcased a diverse array of business ideas, ranging from innovative tech startups to ventures with social impact. The participants valued the master class for refining not only their business ideas and models for the competition, but also for their ongoing growth. After presenting their final pitches, Khoza and Silinda emerged as the competition winners.

Winning Businesses

Cyprian Sandile Khoza, a second-year student in Environmental Management, operates CSK Environmental Consulting (Pty) Ltd, a 100% youth-owned company based in Mpumalanga and Gauteng. The company focuses on the Environmental, Engineering, Water, and Wastewater, Health, and Safety sectors. Their combined expertise exceeds four years, gained in public, private, and governmental organisations.

CSK boasts an interdisciplinary team of professionals with a diverse range of competencies including Geology, Environmental Science, Occupational Health, and Safety. They aspire to provide these services to the mining, construction, agriculture, industrial, private, and governmental sectors. Although they are a small-sized company, they have ambitions to grow and become leaders in the Environmental field.

Penwell Jackey Silinda is the founder of SmartD Pty Ltd, a South African technology company established in 2020. They have developed the SmartD App, an impressive application that offers a wide range of on-demand services, including ride-hailing, food delivery (KFC, Fish & Chips Co, McDonald's), grocery shopping, parcel, and financial services. The app was launched in 2022 and has since been extended to reach deep rural and township communities where deliveries were previously unavailable. Other businesses under the SmartD Pty Ltd umbrella include university accommodation, Smart Tracker, SmartD Tutor, and university and college online applications.

Khoza and Silinda serve as examples of students who are responsive to societal needs. The University of Mpumalanga congratulates them on their victory in the BOOST UP competition and wishes them the best as they forge ahead in business.

MLab and UMPCFERI will convene a follow-up meeting to identify further synergies and collaborations aimed at enhancing the business development services provided to the entrepreneurs supported by the Centre.

Khoza and Silinda also won at the 2023 EDHE Northern Regional Round Intervarsity Competition, where they competed with students from UNISA, the University of Limpopo, and the University of Venda. They are through to the final competition, which will be held in November 2023.

The accolade was presented during the 10th annual Golden Shield Heritage Awards, organised by the National Heritage Council of South Africa (NHC). These awards serve to commend champions of heritage and commend excellence within the sector.

The Voice of Heritage award is one of the prestigious honours included in the Golden Shield Heritage Awards, conferred upon individuals who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to heritage causes. This recognition is bestowed by the National Heritage Council of South Africa (NHC), an arm of the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture.

Expressing her gratitude, Dr Bhuda remarked, "I am greatly honoured to receive this award. This year I was fortunate to be acknowledged for my advocacy in African Indigenous Knowledge research and children’s literature."

The genesis of this achievement began when a friend encouraged her to submit her nomination. "She sent me the application forms, and after careful consideration of their criteria, I was confident that my contributions to the heritage field warranted this recognition. I've invested a decade in this pursuit, and this award validates that dedication."

Dr Bhuda, a staunch advocate for cultural preservation, is a scholar in Indigenous Knowledge Systems. Her interests span from the decolonisation of education to the promotion of indigenous languages, as well as the preservation, protection, management, and dissemination of indigenous knowledge. She is also an author of IsiNdebele children's books.

"This award serves as a constant reminder that my efforts to safeguard African Indigenous Knowledge have not gone unnoticed. When I enrolled in the Bachelor of Indigenous Knowledge Systems programme in 2013, I never envisaged it would mark the inception of my career, culminating in a PhD."

Dr Bhuda's relentless determination propelled her through the academic ranks, resulting in over 20 published academic papers, 30 presented abstracts, and active participation in various heritage-related activities, including media engagements. It is this body of work that has earned her recognition from the NHC.

In addition to her academic pursuits, Dr Bhuda serves as a member of the Indigenous Knowledge/Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) National Authentication Panel, a role she will hold until July 2024. She is also overseeing the Ndebele art project currently underway at UMP's Mbombela campus.

"This award reaffirms my commitment to continue this vital work and set an example. It underscores the significance of my contributions. I aspire to inspire those interested in pursuing a career in heritage and those passionate about authoring books on culture and indigenous languages."

UMP and the University of Rwanda were unanimously confirmed as members, increasing the African membership to 15 universities (five from South Africa), with 10 Australian members. UMP has agreements with Makerere University Business School, the University of Botswana, and the University of Western Sydney; all AAUN members.

Established in 2012, AAUN provides an intelligence and advisory portal for government institutions, the corporate sector, and media to access a range of expertise on Africa; the development of institutional research partnerships; capacity-building and training programmes; and the production of innovative policy solutions through position papers.

A major programme of collaborative funding of joint research programmes was launched in 2016, with a significant impact on advancing Africa-Australia relations. Funding partners include the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), the National Research Foundation, and other Australian funders.

The membership of and participation in the AAUN will meaningfully contribute to the Network’s focus on research, internationalisation, and capacity building. Furthermore, AAUN and UMP have shared values, which include: excellence, diversity, collaboration, and relevance that will advance joint commitments to increasing cross-sectoral partnerships, integrating multidisciplinary research, and promoting gender equity and diversity.

International networks are important to the University of Mpumalanga and its component of a strategy to advance excellence, relevance, and advancement. The University also plays a prominent role in, among others, the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), the SA-Sweden University Forum (SASUF), and the Regional University Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM).

The Australia-Africa Universities Network focuses on engaging Australian universities in sub-Saharan Africa to provide specific expertise across priority areas for Australia and Africa. Key objectives for the network are:

• Provide an intelligence and advisory portal for government institutions, the corporate sector, and media to access, via a 'one-stop-shop', a range of expertise on Africa.
• Develop institutional research partnerships in Africa.
• Develop capacity-building and training programmes, for example in governance, public sector reform, education, mining, agriculture, and health.
• Produce innovative policy solutions through position papers with key academics, non-governmental organisations, and business and political representatives.
• Provide post-training support for African scholars, including an alumni network, linking with African communities in Australia as appropriate.

The Play Your Part Ignite campaign is designed to ignite the entrepreneurial drive in budding business owners, equipping them with the tools essential for their ventures to prosper. A key focus of the campaign is to assist participants in crafting a concise and impactful elevator pitch.

Samuel Melusi Simelane, the founder of Khehla Lami General Supply and Cleaning, clinched the first position along with a cash prize of R12 000. He expressed, “Winning means that we are on the right track, it gives us the confidence and the persistence to keep going and strive for more. The prize money will help to market and advertise our business and raise awareness of the importance of credit scores.”

The Bachelor of Commerce graduate further elaborated, “The master class was very informative, especially when pitching to potential investors. It was enjoyable and provided us with the opportunity to network with stakeholders and peers. We were subsequently invited to Rise FM to share our journey and plans. The competition led to a substantial increase in our following and engagement on our social media platforms.”

Simelane’s business, a hygiene and safety company, specializes in cleaning services, cleaning material supplies, purified water, and personal protective clothing. He stated, “We are located at stand no 1909 Kanyamazane and the UMPCFERI (University of Mpumalanga Centre for Entrepreneurship Rapid Incubator) Building 12 is our second home. We offer high-quality cleaning hampers at affordable prices and are introducing a direct debit prepaid service for students to simultaneously boost their credit scores and acquire necessary hygiene supplies.”

B-Organic products are developed by Phindile Sithole, an Honours Student at UMP.

Phindile Sithole, the founder of B-Organic products, secured the second position and received a cash prize of R8 000. She remarked, “This achievement marks a significant milestone for B-Organic, opening doors for expansion and growth.”

Sithole, an Honours in Sociology student, a tutor, and the secretary of the UMP Entrepreneurship Club, stated, “I’m guided by the principle of 'You are the bag, secure yourself.’ I've placed a strong emphasis on prioritising mental well-being and seizing opportunities that contribute to personal growth and benefit others.”

She added that after serving as a Cantu Beauty Fellow in 2022, she collaborated with a diverse, global team to conduct extensive industry research on hair trends, with a specific focus on the challenges faced by individuals with 4c hair. “This experience enhanced my research skills, complementing my academic background. Drawing from this foundation, as well as the entrepreneurial insights gained through my academic pursuits and involvement with the University of Mpumalanga's Entrepreneurship Centre, I embarked on the journey to establish my own venture, B-Organic, in April 2023. The name, 'B-Organic,' signifies a celebration of natural beauty and self-acceptance."

The University's Centre for Entrepreneurship played a pivotal role in laying the foundation for B-Organic. It was through this centre that Sithole became aware of the Play Your Part event. She leveraged the community they had built to recognise an opportunity within a WhatsApp group.

Zaba Mokoena, founder of Hers Truly, secured third place and won R5 000. The Bachelor of Agriculture honours graduate shared, “I was invited to attend the Brand SA competition to pitch my business and the rest is history. The experience was very insightful and fun to showcase all the academic knowledge acquired over the years.”

The UMPCFERI programme played a crucial role in empowering these students with the skills necessary to excel in the competition. The studentpreneurs received guidance in structuring emerging businesses and exploiting untapped opportunities from a fresh perspective.

Simelane emphasised the significance of the knowledge gained from the UMPCFERI, stating, “It is at the centre where we receive all the necessary information to help us take our businesses to greater heights. We are very honoured to be part of the programme and the help they have been providing us. Without them, this achievement would have remained a mere dream.”

Play Your Part is a nationwide initiative created to inspire, empower, and celebrate active citizenship in South Africa. It aims to uplift the spirit of our nation by encouraging all South Africans to contribute to positive change, become involved, and take action. A nation of people who care deeply for one another and the environment in which they live benefits everyone. The initiative seeks to motivate South Africans to devote some of their time, money, skills, or resources towards building a better future for all.

The University of Mpumalanga has Institutional Research Themes, and one of the themes addresses governance, ethics, and leadership. As part of this, a research team comprising Honours and Masters students, along with academics at the university, conducted a research study on community participation, service delivery, and leadership in Ehlanzeni District Municipality.

During the 16th Biennial Conference of the South African Association of Political Studies (SAAPS) held at the University of Mpumalanga’s Mbombela campus, some members of the research team presented fieldwork results for Mbombela and Nkomazi.

Broad findings

The study confirms that the performance of local municipal authorities in South Africa regarding service delivery, community participation, and leadership remains questionable. This is despite the mandate of local municipal authorities under Section 152 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa (RSA 1996) “to promote social and economic development”. Furthermore, Section 153 (a) emphasises the importance of leadership and governance, stating that municipal authorities must structure and manage their administration, budgeting, and planning processes in a way that prioritises the delivery of basic needs and promotes socio-economic development in the communities they govern.

Despite the availability of guidelines for leadership and governance, such as those outlined in the Municipal Supplement of the King IV report on corporate governance, the performance of municipalities in relation to governance, leadership, and ethics appears to be lacking. Community members interviewed raised numerous concerns, and officials interviewed suggested that there are issues with leadership, ethics, and governance in municipalities.

Concluding remarks

The plan is for the research team to engage with relevant municipalities. This process commenced at the conference with the involvement of selected officials.

BOM Talent Search programmes provide opportunities for talented individuals to express themselves in their respective art forms and also ensure that they develop the necessary skills tailored to their specific needs.

The culmination of the choral competitions results in the top winners receiving a combination of cash prizes, musical instruments or equipment, and art materials, all aimed at further developing the artistic skills of the successful participants.

The competition draws choral music choirs from all nine provinces. Four other universities participated in the competition, namely TUT, NWU, NMU, and WSU, along with some TVET Colleges.

The UMP Choir was accompanied by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Thoko Mayekiso, the Dean of Students
Dr Paul Maminza, and other senior staff members.

Choirmaster, Lonny Mokoena said he was happy with the performance of the choir. "This type of competition was a new environment for the choristers but it was a humbling and a nice experience for me as the Conductor. I know we will be in the top three next time," he said. 

The UMP Choir competed in the following categories:

• Solo soprano by Hope Ndlovu. She secured the 13th position.
• Mezzo-soprano by Sonwabise Maqabasa. She achieved the 12th position.
• Solo Tenor by Kulani Mashimbye, who secured the 3rd position.
• Solo baritone by Tshepo Makua; the results from adjudicators are still pending.
• Quintet by Hope Ndlovu, Treasure Digashu, Isak Mngomezulu, Ayanda Nqcane, and Dzanga Rambuda, which received the 13th position.
• Standard Choir Category (Western Song): UMP Choir secured the 8th position; and the 6th position for the Standard Choir Category African Song.

The UMP Choir performed exceptionally well, considering they were competing with mostly professional choirs that have been in the game for many years. The Vice-Chancellor and the Dean of Students attended the competition to support the Choir, and the students were thrilled and motivated to see their Vice-Chancellor travel all the way to personally support them.

The competition organisers expressed their gratitude for the presence of UMP Vice-Chancellor and the Dean of Students at the event, supporting the UMP Choir. In their own words, it was "a great honour and would, hopefully, encourage other leaders to follow suit".

UMP Management would like to extend their thanks to Mr. Joseph Mokoatala, the Manager of Student Governance and Development, for his work in coordinating the Choir's activities. The Choir Conductor, Lonny Mokoena, has been the steadfast backbone of the Choir, and his efforts are greatly appreciated.

As part of the revitalised strategy of the Library Information Services, they have actively championed and advanced the acquisition of fresh titles in numerous subject fields to support and further the academic endeavour at UMP. 

Over 2 000 academic books from a diverse range of esteemed publishers were showcased, covering university programmes and research themes. The objective was to afford academics the opportunity to select books relevant to their academic pursuits in time for 2024.

Ms. Vuyokazi Sigadla, the acquisitions librarian from the UMP Library and Information Services, elucidated that the purpose of the annual book exhibition was to expedite the procurement process, ensuring that the books are acquired promptly for the 2024 academic year.

"We invite book publishers to come and present the books they have; we exhibit them and immediately initiate the processing for the library after the show," Sigadla added. "The books chosen by the academic staff members will be showcased in the library and utilised by students. The primary reason for involving academic staff in the selection process is not for their personal use, but to recommend valuable material that will benefit students and enhance their academic capabilities."

The University received an overwhelming number of books from different publishers.

Recently appointed Commercial Law and Law of Insurance lecturer, Ms. Tebatso Tebele, found the experience gratifying. She remarked, "Events like these provide us, as academics, with the chance to have various suppliers bring forth diverse books. I acquired Commercial Law books from various publishers such as JUTA and Oxford.

"I am genuinely pleased to have secured some books I've been seeking, and that both I and the students will have access to them from the library. I also stumbled upon a particularly intriguing book on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Lawyers. Academia is evolving; we now have AI technology and it's imperative to acquaint ourselves with the shifts and adaptations that are underway. We cannot afford to find ourselves in situations where students start to surpass us."

Ms. Tebele went on to express how participating in the expo for the entire week had been advantageous for her. "I've come to realise that the expo wasn't solely beneficial to academia but also catered to non-academic interests. We also have access to novels if you're seeking a respite from academia and happen to be a book enthusiast.”

Some of the showcased books included entrepreneurship, an area the university is urging students to focus on, as part of cultivating a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship that is responsive to societal challenges.
