The event was attended by distinguished guests, including Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, Archbishop of Cape Town, Hon. Mr Bonakele Majuba, MEC for Education in the Province of Mpumalanga, businesses, organizations, and local and international academics, who also joined virtually.

Opening the event, UMP Chancellor Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Maya, highlighted that the establishment of the University of Mpumalanga was a result of the shared commitment of a democratic nation to address past inequalities and provide affordable, accessible, and achievable higher education to all South Africans.

“Education is a necessary tool to reshape and develop our communities, and institutions of higher learning must respond to the living conditions and needs of their communities to improve socio-economic circumstances and contribute meaningfully to the country’s economic growth." Justice Maya added that UMP has firmly positioned itself among its peers as a powerful institution that responds to socioeconomic challenges.

King Makhosoke II Mabhena congratulated UMP under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Mayekiso.

“Milestones such as this anniversary do not only afford us an opportunity to look back in reflection, but they also encourage us to look ahead and plan for a better future. The world is constantly evolving, and many challenges and opportunities lie ahead. This is a moment for us all to reaffirm our pledge to ensure the success of this university.

It is a time to drive the message harder to our youth, in this age of deeply entrenched corruption and mindless materialism and consumerism, in which many people with no discernible skills of any kind and who have little or no education at all, own all the shiny trappings which are attractive to the young and leads them to question why they should toil in school if it's possible to get money and all these nice things without an education and any sense of integrity, that an education remains a critical tool for true self-advancement and meaningful human development and to stay in school.”

University of Mpumalanga Vice-Chancellor Professor Thoko Mayekiso shared insights from UMP’s pioneering journey, Luhambo Lwemhlahlandlela, and spoke about taking up the role as the first Vice-Chancellor.

“The Chinese proverb: 'A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step' is most appropriate to capture the resilience that would be required to establish a new institution. That single step starts with a vision. I would, therefore, take this opportunity to pay homage and a deep sense of gratitude to the visionaries who took that very step such as Dr Enos Mabuza; Dr William Ndlala; Prof David Mabunda; Prof Selby Ripinga; Prof J P Shongwe; Mr DD Mabuza; Dr Matthew Phosa; Mr Irvin Phenyane, and many others. We are also grateful to Prof Andy Mogotlane, the Head of the Strategic Team, who contributed to the noble efforts to set up the University.

That vision finds expression in the UMP envisioning statement, 'In a region thirsty for learning, UMP assumes a leadership role in providing the province and the country with academic avenues for advancement. The University endows its presence with the promise and potential of the region to confirm its rightful place in the knowledge economy of our country and continent.'"

Professor Mayekiso further shared her gratitude to the Council, the first Chair of Council, Prof David Mabunda, Minister for Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande, and the Department of Higher Education and Training for constant support. "We are also grateful for the goodwill from the Province of Mpumalanga."

"Our challenge was to give the country a sense of what a post-apartheid institution would look like. We are lucky that we are not burdened by the legacy of apartheid. Creating a new society would require new institutions that would inculcate different habits and a new consciousness. We dare not fail.”

She explained the huge responsibility of pioneering a newly established university and mentioned that excellence was the lifeblood of the institution. Trailblazing, pathfinding, and pathbreaking became part of their being.

“The unique attributes of pioneers: resilience, vision, grit, and determination, would form a huge part of our approach. I referred to pioneering as a perplexing paradox in my inaugural address – it was already evident to me that there are no margins for error- we needed to get it right – the nation, the province, and the surrounding communities invested their hopes in us and, therefore, it was crucial that we put our best foot forward and draw deep from the art of possibility when our own morale sagged.

We had to have a high adversity quotient, to remind ourselves why this institution came into being and the immense benefits to the Province of Mpumalanga that would accrue when we succeeded. There was no room for complacency or space to drag our feet. The imperatives of poverty eradication, redress, transformation, and access, informed the material conditions on the ground.”

UMP talent entertained the guests.

Placing great value on partnerships/collaboration/linkages and networks is what drove UMP to achieve its vision of being an engaged University, said Professor Mayekiso.

“Spreading our wings and reaching out, locally, nationally, on the African continent, and globally have been among the efforts we have expended to ensure that UMP grows and has credible partners. Over the 10 years, we have established partnerships with 33 international universities; 11 in Europe; 4 in North America; 2 in Australia; 9 in Asia, and 9 in Africa.

Our students have participated in international forums, where they did us proud, and so has been their participation nationally. They have presented papers at national and international conferences. The road ahead beckons. We will revisit and revise our initial strategies against the backdrop of the lessons learnt along the way. We need to remain forever vigilant to ensure that we do not become oblivious to new opportunities. Agility, flexibility, and openness to embrace change should be what we always strive for."

The day was filled with festivities. 

Professor Mayekiso concluded with these words, “For our sake, and for the sake of generations yet unborn, let us join hands, to build a relevant, creative, innovative, and entrepreneurial University, which will serve the needs of this province, those of South Africa, then Africa, and indeed, those of the world generally.”

King Makhosoke II Mabhena of the amaNdebele Nation congratulated the UMP and praised the leadership of Professor Mayekiso for building and leading the University to excellence. He also came bearing gifts, including the AmaNdebele blanket, for the Vice-Chancellor.

Other speakers included former Chancellor of UMP, President Cyril Ramaphosa, Deputy Minister of Higher Education Science and Innovation, Mr Buti Manamela, Prof Sibongile Muthwa, Chairperson of Universities South Africa and Vice-Chancellor of Nelson Mandela University, Dr Phethiwe Matutu, CEO of USAf: Universities South Africa, and Prof Alexander Brem from the Univerity of Stuttgart to mention a few.

Speaking on behalf of Mpumalanga Premier Ms Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane, MEC for Education Mr Bonakele Majuba said, “Today we can proudly join the thousands celebrating the 10-year anniversary of providing quality education and training opportunities.”

The painting, crafted by Mrs. Sophie "NoSinki" Mahlangu, a distinguished Ndebele art custodian and her team, stands as a testament to UMP's dedication to preserving cultural heritage and languages.

Mrs. Mahlangu conveyed her appreciation to the University Management for warmly receiving her contribution. "I am deeply thankful to the University for the invaluable work you do, providing our children with opportunities for higher education. This is my modest offering to you. May you continue to strive towards establishing an institution that cherishes our heritage," she remarked.

UMP Vice-Chancellor, Professor Thoko Mayekiso, expressed her gratitude towards Mrs. Mahlangu and her team for their generous gesture. "This artwork reinforces our African identity as the University of Mpumalanga in our mission to be a leading African University, creating avenues for sustainable development through innovation. It signifies our commitment to honour and promotes our African identity," she emphasised.

Professor Mayekiso further recalled the genesis of this collaboration, dating back to when UMP's IsiNdebele Lecturer, Dr. Monica Bhuda, was presented with an isiNdebele traditional garment and two pictures that now grace the Vice-Chancellor's office.

"The art you have crafted here will serve as a constant reminder, every time we pass through this gate, that we are stepping into Africa. We will be reminded that we are entering a university that reveres our African identity, a university that recognises our significance in the world. This is why this painting holds such immense importance, for it is intertwined with our pioneering journey," Professor Mayekiso underlined.

She added, "We have confidence that our collaboration will endure, and we believe that this will not be the last time you grace our university with your presence."

Dr. Paul Maminza, UMP's Dean of Students, contributed, "As we drive through this gate, we are met with a vivid reflection of our Africanness. This gift encapsulates the essence of Africanness within our university. We extend our deepest gratitude for the extraordinary effort and dedication invested in this painting."

The event culminated in the official unveiling of the artistic mural painting with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The day was marked by cultural and traditional performances, including poetry, dance, and music, presented by both staff members and students.

Speaking at the event, Dr Machingambe underscored the significance of poetry, saying that African poetry holds a vital place in our lives.

“When we seek to understand your history, we begin with poetry. If we want to know where you come from, we don’t need to ask; we study or listen to your poetry. We aim to comprehend the sorrows, the noise, and the excitement that you have experienced in your life through poetry.”

“Academically, what you do in the classroom may not have a 100% impact, as you do not exist solely within the classroom. Upon graduation, you will be part of a community within the economy. You need not become social outcasts; rather, you should be assets to the communities you find yourself in.”

Dr. Machingambe further explained, “This day is significant because what you engage in outside the classroom is equally important and, in fact, reinforces what you do inside the classroom. Experience has also demonstrated that those who participate in extracurricular activities tend to excel in their studies.”

Senior Lecturer in the School of Social Sciences, Dr. Mafika Lubisi highlighted that in African Philosophy, a person is not defined by their physical appearance but by what resides within.

Students expressed themselves through poetry.

“What you see is a temporary structure, merely a form of recognition, but a person, according to our African belief, is a spirit. This is why we do not fear interfering with the body but with the spirit, even after a person has passed on. In the event of a pregnancy, a messenger is dispatched to inform the other family to anticipate a new addition. The mother receives herbs in preparation for the baby's arrival. In the pre-colonial era, when a child is born, they announce their entry into the world of the living through crying.

If a child does not cry, it signifies that the designated time for their birth has not yet arrived. To ensure the survival of premature babies, they are placed in wooden trays, and the mother uses a tube to feed the child until the day they cry, signifying their official birth.”

The event was opened by Heritage Lecturer, Dr. Thulisile Bhuda who acknowledged and emphasised the importance of our identity. “We should always celebrate our origins and take pride in our identity as Africans. Programmes like MC100 help students fully embrace their culture and heritage.”

Siyabuswa and Mbombela staff and students gathered at the sports fields for the 5KM Fun Run and a 3KM Fun Walk. Welcoming the participants and spectators, Dean of Students Dr Paul Maminza said the university is committed to celebrating its 10 years of existence with the Friday events, which are a build-up to the big event to be held later this year.

"We are here to have fun. For those walking, please maintain a brisk pace, and for those running, give it your all! We're thrilled about this initiative and the creation of history at the University of Mpumalanga. Ensure you enjoy yourselves, and it brings me immense pleasure to have our Vice-Chancellor here with us."

The 5km run was won by Gule Mfungelwa, a Diploma in Agriculture: Plant Production student and an athlete, who shared that the run proved challenging, despite his athletic background. "I'm deeply grateful for the win and to the university for providing such an exhilarating platform. This will inspire more students to join the athletics team, and we can expect improvements in major competitions."

Sibusiso Nkosi, a Transport Clerk, and Driver, emerged as the victor in the male staff members' 5KM run category. He admitted that the run was more demanding than he initially thought. "I'm overjoyed that the university shows its care for us as staff members, especially for giving us this Friday to just let loose," he said. 

The Walk and Run were held at the Mbombela and Siyabuswa campuses.

Catharine Sithole, a Final year Bachelor of Arts student, clinched the top spot in the female students' 3KM walk category. She described the experience as fantastic and expressed pride in her victory. "I thoroughly enjoyed it, and it served as part of my exercise routine, as we're usually engrossed in our studies. My gratitude goes to the management team and the university for reminding us that we're special as students, and we had the pleasure of enjoying the company of some of our lecturers, which was a unique experience."

Phindile Mkhabela, Secretary to the Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Development, and Business Sciences, emerged as the winner in the female staff members' 5KM run category. She confessed that winning was a pleasant surprise as she didn't anticipate securing the top position.

"This served as a physical exercise for me, and I'm overjoyed and grateful. The experience was excellent, but I'm particularly pleased with the turnout. I hope the University will organise more events of this nature." 

The Walk and Run proved to be fun for Students and Staff members. 

Edith Siqida, Stores Controller under Hotel Catering and Operations, clinched victory in the female staff members' 3KM run category. She shared that her experience was immensely enjoyable and exciting. "I'm pleased that I won and had the chance to participate in the 10-year celebration fun walk/run of the University. It was a meaningful engagement, and I hope there will be more of these activities in the future."

Staff members and students were presented with mustard-coloured 10-year anniversary caps and flags to demonstrate unity. All top 10 winners from various categories were bestowed with medals and 10-year anniversary T-shirts, while the top two from each category received medals and trophies.

The events, held at the Mbombela and Siyabuswa campuses, resonated with a medley of genres including cultural, classical, hip-hop, house, gospel, and contemporary music.

Dean of Students, Dr Paul Maminza, expressed gratitude for the presence of Vice-Chancellor Professor Thoko Mayekiso and the University's management, honouring the event. He remarked, "This gathering is part of our 10-year celebration. It serves as a precursor to the grand celebration scheduled for next month."

UMP’s renowned choir, acclaimed for their soulful melodies, inaugurated the event with three enchanting songs. Alongside, various cultural musical and dance groups exhibited the rich tapestry of Mpumalanga University's diversity, including Zulu, Venda, Bapedi, and Xhosa groups.

Students showcased their talents.

From the Siyabuswa campus, Engabeni, Nofanezile, and Ntokozweni delivered compelling group performances. In Mbombela, Soulful Melodies and Indigenous groups (Zulu, Venda, and Bapedi) took the stage.

Adding to the grandeur, former UMP student Siyabonga Nkosi, now a renowned musician known as Atchaar, graced the Mbombela campus. The Hip Hop maestro electrified the audience with tracks from his latest album, providing an inspirational note for students to persevere in their studies and relish the rewards later.

Atchaar has since become a qualified graduate, establishing himself as an independent artist. His eight-track EP garnered considerable success, with numerous copies sold. He boasts a substantial following in the province, having secured numerous interviews in both local and national media.

Both campuses curated an eclectic lineup, featuring solo artists and captivating dance performances. Additionally, an open mic session provided a platform for students and staff to showcase their talents.

Speaking during the event, Professor Mayekiso shared some insights of UMP’s pioneering journey and indicated that it has been an amazing journey. In paying homage to the individuals who envisioned the idea of establishing the University of Mpumalanga, Prof Mayekiso said the Chinese proverb, which states that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, is most appropriate to capture the resilience that would be required to establish a new Institution. That single step starts with a vision.

"I take this opportunity to pay homage and extend a deep sense of gratitude to the visionaries who took that very first step, such as Dr Enos Mabuza, Dr William Ndlala, Prof David Mabunda, Prof Selby Ripinga, Prof JP Shongwe, Mr DD Mabuza, Mr Irvin Phenyane, and many others”.

Before assuming her position as the first VC of the University of Mpumalanga in November 2014, Prof Mayekiso attained experience in various academic and leadership roles over three decades from several institutions. In her sterling academic career, Prof Mayekiso has held positions of Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, Professor, Head of Department, and Vice Dean at the then-University of Transkei (Walter Sisulu University).

She then joined the University of the Witwatersrand, where she served as Head of School, Deputy Dean, and then Acting Executive Dean in the Faculty of Humanities. She proceeded to the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in 2007, as an Executive Dean in the Faculty of Arts, and then Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Engagement.

Prof Mayekiso acknowledged that establishing a new University had its own fair share of challenges. However, the support that she received from the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Dr Blade Nzimande, the Council, members of the Management Committee (MANCO), students, staff members, and members of the community contributed positively to the establishment and growth of UMP.

Prof Seepe spoke about UMP's remarkable journey.

Prof Mayekiso attributes the success of UMP to the effective teamwork, dedication, and collegiality of MANCO. The VC further expressed her gratitude to staff members and students for their contribution to the Pioneering Journey of UMP.   

In reflecting on the progress that UMP has made, Prof Mayekiso referred to her inaugural speech in May 2015 when she made the commitment to build a Comprehensive University that mirrors a post-apartheid institution and said “Pioneers have to build a firm foundation, mindful that what they are creating should be durable, marketable, sustainable, and enduring. Generations yet unborn must find a thriving University, one they will be proud to join, because we who pioneered it, laid a firm foundation, and got into this immense project with body, mind, and soul”

According to Prof Mayekiso, some of the notable achievements in UMP’s Pioneering Journey and as a testament to a Decade of Excellence and Creating Opportunities include the following:

• As an engaged University, UMP placed great emphasis on partnerships and collaborations as drivers and enablers of achieving our vision. Over the 10 years, UMP has established 32 partnerships with international Universities, 11 in Europe, 4 in North America, 9 in Asia, 8 in Africa, and 2 in Australia.
• The success of the ENACTUS programme has been the pride of UMP, to date the UMP Enactus Team has won 32 trophies from national competitions. In 2022, the UMP ENACTUS team came second out of 21 institutions that competed.
• 220 VC scholarships have been awarded since 2016, covering full tuition, accommodation, meals, learning materials allowance, monthly stipends, and personal development.
• As part of growing its own timber, some of the students who started with their first qualifications at UMP are now doing Master’s and Doctoral degrees. UMP has appointed some of them as Academic Talent Stewardship Fellows and Associate Lecturers.
• UMP has achieved a Pass rate ranging from 80 - 85 % over the years.
• UMP has graduated 4 485 students since its establishment.
• UMP has been awarded the National Research Foundation (NRF) Excelleration Award which acknowledges South African research institutions for achieving the most improved research performance.
• NRF-Rated Researchers have increased from one in 2014 to 13 in 2023.
• 47% of UMP academic staff members have Doctoral Degrees.
• UMP enrolments have increased from 169 students in 2014 to 8 442 in 2023.
• UMP academic offerings have increased from three in 2014 to 65 in 2023.
• UMP staff complement has increased from 12 in 2014 to 595 in 2023.
• UMP has received an unqualified (clean) audit opinion for nine consecutive years, from 2014 to 2022.  
• UMP boasts some of the most iconic infrastructure of a university in our country to support the academic project.
   

The Seminar was attended by students, academics, staff, and external guests.

In closing, Professor Mayekiso quoted her 2015 inaugural speech when she said, “For our sake, and for the sake of generations yet unborn, let us join hands, to build a relevant, creative, innovative, and entrepreneurial University, which will serve the needs of this province, those of South Africa, then Africa, and indeed, those of the world generally”.

In responding to the keynote address of Prof Mayekiso, Higher Education Consultant and former Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Zululand, Professor Sipho Seepe, commended the VC and her team for their unwavering commitment to building UMP to be what is it today.

“The imperative of constructing UMP for future generations carries significant weight. It goes with saying that there is a need to safeguard this institution and build on its successes given the solid foundation that has been laid by Prof Mayekiso and her team,” said Prof Seepe.

The Mbombela and Siyabuswa campus students and staff members competed against each other in various sporting codes offered at UMP, including Athletics, Football (males and females), Netball, Volleyball (males and females), Basketball, Rugby, Chess, Diketo, Morabaraba, and Encuva.

The event was well attended by students and staff members who were participating and supporting those who were taking part. In attendance were Vice-Chancellor Professor Thoko Mayekiso, Dean of Students Dr Paul Maminza, Siyabuswa Campus Director Dr Emmanuel Tshikwatamba, and Director of Student Housing Dr Nomvula Twaise.

"UMP Sports Day is aimed at encouraging fitness and wellness amongst students and staff members. It creates an environment for healthy competition and serves as extra training for UMP sports teams which then prepares them for future competition," says Sports and Recreation Manager Velhemina Manamela.

Manamela further said, "Within our Sport and Recreation year programme, sports day is one of the events that we host as a way of giving our athletes a platform to show off their potential from our two campuses."

In an exhilarating display of talent and teamwork, the University of Mpumalanga's (UMP) Sports Day saw outstanding performances across various disciplines. Here are the winners of the various sports events, along with their respective campuses:

Team Sports: Students

Students from the Mbombela Campus showed exceptional prowess, securing the gold in Basketball (Ladies and Men), Football (Ladies and Men), and Volleyball (Ladies and Men). Siyabuswa Campus displayed commendable skills and clinched the gold in Netball, demonstrating their competitive spirit. UMP Butho, a team representing the University, showcased their strength in Rugby 10's, securing the gold in this thrilling event.

Team Sports: Staff

In the staff category, Mbombela Campus staff members displayed remarkable sportsmanship, claiming victory in both Netball and Men's Football events, showcasing their dedication to sports and teamwork.

Some of the sports played on the day included soccer, volleyball and netball.

Athletics

The Athletics events were a showcase of speed and endurance. Treasure Mkhabela from the Mbombela Campus exhibited exceptional sprinting skills, earning the gold in the Women's 100m race, while Fortunate Banda from Siyabuswa Campus secured the silver. In the Men's 100m race, Tshidisang Mokoatse of Mbombela Campus took home the gold, with Kevin Mlambo also from Mbombela Campus earning the silver.

In the Women's 200m, Fortunate Banda from Siyabuswa Campus once again displayed her remarkable speed, clinching the gold, while Zinhle Magagula from Mbombela Campus secured the silver. In the Men's 200m, Tshidisang Mokoatse (Mbombela) secured another gold, with Michack Mbonani (Mbombela) taking home the silver.

In the 400m events, Agreement Mametje (Siyabuswa) won the gold for Women, while Conny Nkambule (Mbombela) claimed the silver. For Men, Khomotso Mahlare (Mbombela) secured the gold, and Mfungelwa Gule (Mbombela) took the silver.

The 800m races saw impressive performances from Lwethu Jiyana (Siyabuswa) who won gold in the Women's event, and Mfungelwa Gule (Mbombela) who clinched gold in the Men's event. Khomotso Mabula (Mbombela) secured the silver in the Women's event, while Kabelo Sefali (Mbombela) took the silver in the Men's event.

In the 1500m, Wethu Jiyane (Siyabuswa) displayed outstanding endurance, earning the gold in the Women's race. In the Men's race, Mfungelwa Gule (Mbombela) secured another gold, with Kabelo Sefali (Mbombela) winning silver.

The relay races were intense and thrilling. In the Women's 4x100m Relay, Mbombela Campus claimed the gold, while in the Men's event, they secured another victory.

Chess

The cerebral battle of Chess witnessed strategic thinking at its best. Sizakele Sibiya (Mbombela) won the gold in the Women's category, while Siphozinhle Khwalo (Mbombela) secured the silver. In the Men's category, Sifiso Onwasakho (Mbombela) emerged as the gold medallist, and Malibongwe Nkosi (Mbombela) earned the silver.

Traditional Games

In the traditional games, Angel Mkhonto (Siyabuswa) exhibited exceptional skill and won gold in the Diketo Women's event, while Vanessa Mhlanga (Siyabuswa) secured the silver. Niven Ndlovu (Mbombela) displayed remarkable skill in the Diketo Men's event, earning the gold, and Nsindiso Magubane (Siyabuswa) took home the silver.

The Morabaraba events saw Jessica Masilela (Siyabuswa) and Nhlanhla Jiane (Siyabuswa) demonstrating their strategic thinking, with Jessica securing the gold and Nhlanhla earning the silver in the Women's category. In the Men's category, Kgabo Buthane (Mbombela) emerged as the gold medallist, and Bongiswa Masango (Siyabuswa) secured the silver.

The day was a testament to the competitive spirit, dedication, and unity of UMP's students and staff members in the realm of sports.

This lecture not only underscores the University's commitment to intellectual exchange but also sheds illuminating insights on South Africa's pivotal role as a linchpin for African reconstruction and development.

Prof Joseph Diescho's compelling lecture, titled, "South Africa, still the epicentre of and for the reconstruction of Africa," offered a thought-provoking exploration of South Africa's ongoing significance within the broader context of African reconstruction and development.

Weaving historical insights, modern challenges, and philosophical contemplation, all while encouraging introspection and unity, Prof Diescho drew upon the wisdom of historical figures, and emphasized the importance of approaching interactions with fellow African leaders from a perspective of fraternal consciousness, rather than adopting roles that may breed condescension.

Quoting President Julius Kambarage Nyerere's advice to avoid playing "Big Brother" or "Small Brother," Prof Diescho resonated with the need to foster relationships founded on mutual respect and understanding. He highlighted that such an approach contributes significantly to the unity of the continent.

A Historical Retrospective: From the Berlin Conference to Ubuntu

Delving into history, Prof Diescho meticulously dissected the aftermath of the infamous Berlin Conference of 1884-1885. This conference, which arbitrarily divided Africa among European powers, left an indelible scar on the continent's unity. Prof Diescho accentuated the profound resonance of South Africa's unique identity, forged amidst the fragmentation caused by colonial powers.

"Revisiting the aftermath of the 1884 Berlin Conference is essential to comprehend South Africa's role in the continental context. European powers' partitioning of Africa redefined its identity and geopolitical landscape. The ensuing emergence of distinct nations, labelled as South Africans or East Africans, marked a disconnection from the broader African identity."

Transitioning to the concept of Ubuntu, Prof Diescho elaborated on its significance, exploring its gradual erosion due to the advent of private property ownership and evolving societal dynamics. He artfully balanced the tensions between individual ownership and the communal ethos encapsulated by Ubuntu.

The audience included academics, students, and staff members.

Afrophobia vs. Xenophobia: Unmasking Identity Struggles

A segment of Prof Diescho's lecture unveiled the nuanced differences between Afrophobia and xenophobia. He introduced the term Afrophobia to shed light on the identity crisis faced by numerous African residents, leading to divisive perceptions and simmering tensions.

"Let us momentarily address the tempestuous issue of xenophobia. The current narrative often portrays South Africans as hostile toward foreigners, an assertion grounded in some truth. Yet, a nuanced perspective is required to grasp the broader context. I posit that the phenomenon often termed xenophobia within South Africa is better understood as Afrophobia – a complex fear of fellow Africans.

Tracing back to settler colonialism, we uncover the root of wounds borne by those who call this land home. This narrative perpetuates the notion that possessing a darker complexion necessitates justification for belonging. It's akin to being cast as a perpetual outsider."

Impact of self-development

Reflecting on the visionary aspirations of leaders such as Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki, Prof Diescho echoed the call for an African renaissance. He passionately urged South Africa to strengthen its governance systems, thereby nurturing pride, confidence, and active engagement in reshaping the destiny of the African continent. Drawing inspiration from Lao Tzu's teachings, he emphasized the profound impact of self-development and collective empowerment on shaping a harmonious and promising future.

As the lecture drew to a close, Prof Diescho seamlessly wove together historical accounts, philosophical insights, and contemporary challenges, illuminating South Africa's intricate role in African reconstruction. The lecture served as a resounding call for South Africans to embrace their distinctive heritage and become catalysts for positive transformation within the broader African narrative.

In reflecting upon the resonance of Prof Diescho's lecture, one is reminded of South Africa's unwavering contributions to steering Africa's trajectory. The call to actively engage in the ongoing process of reconstruction and development reverberates resolutely, inviting each individual – particularly the youth – to play an indispensable role in shaping a brighter and more unified future for the continent.

The panel featured former UMP students, now Associate Lecturers, including the Former and First Female SRC President (2020) Vuyelwa Magagula, Confidence Ndlovu, Moses Sithole, and Thabang Mashiloane. They shared their journeys from admission to UMP to becoming ATSP Fellows and Associate Lecturers at the University.

Confidence Ndlovu, an ATSP Fellow and Associate Lecturer in the School of Development Studies at UMP, is the first Master's graduate and is currently pursuing a PhD in Development Studies. Reflecting on her UMP journey, Ndlovu expressed gratitude for the transformative Vice-Chancellor Scholarship, providing financial security and a sense of belonging. Despite initially aspiring to be an accountant, she embraced destiny, choosing development studies to fulfil her father's vision of being the first graduate in their village.

The panel discussion was engaging and inspiring.

“The VC scholarship provided financial security and opened doors to leadership training, inspiring my passion for academia,” she highlighted.

Taking full advantage of UMP's opportunities, Ndlovu's journey included trips to the UK, personal development tours, and leadership roles. In 2020, as President of ENACTUS UMP, she led the team to win $5000 in Ford competitions for the sustainable community project REFUEL. In 2021, Ndlovu achieved an historic milestone as UMP's first master's graduate, earning her degree Cum Laude.

Recognised as an ATSP fellow and associate lecturer, she now facilitates modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Her research journey involves publishing academic articles, presenting at national conferences, and pursuing a Ph.D.

Ndlovu declared, "I want my story to challenge all of you today to look again, look at my eight-to-ten-year journey with the institution, and ask why you can ever believe it is impossible to achieve what you come here for."

Expressing gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Thoko Mayekiso, and the university's management and lecturers, Ndlovu defines excellence as "striving for greatness" and emphasizes the importance of doing one's best in all endeavours without compromising the quality of education. "This is what UMP has done in the past 10 years," asserted Ndlovu.

Former and first female Student Representative Council (SRC) President Vuyelwa Carol Magagula has evolved into an Associate Lecturer under the Academic Talent Stewardship Programme (ATSP) in Development Studies. Currently pursuing her Master's degree, Magagula's research delves into the Sustainability of Women-owned Home-based Businesses in the era of Load shedding and the significance of addressing challenges faced by women entrepreneurs during power outages, contributing to broader goals of sustainability and gender equality.

Reflecting on her experiences, Magagula spoke about her participation in the Student Exchange programme, where UMP provided her with a travel grant to study in Austria.

"UMP will never give you an opportunity and not equip you to utilise that opportunity to the best of your ability," she asserted.

Her journey includes breaking barriers as the first female SRC President, equipped with development programmes and opportunities to attend workshops that made her into the well-rounded leader she is today.

Despite challenges, entering the presidency in her second year, Magagula navigated complexities and sought guidance when needed. Facing age-related challenges, Magagula sought advice from the Vice-Chancellor, who encouraged her and assisted her in using her leadership skills.

"I had overlooked the skills I was equipped with to lead at that point," she confessed.

Magagula is grateful for the opportunities presented by UMP. She acknowledged its impact not only on her leadership journey but also on her personal and business development. Magagula emphasised the importance of seeking help and highlighted UMP's open-door policy. Looking forward to the rest of her journey at UMP, she aspires to be a Vice-Chancellor one day.

Thabang Mashiloane, a 27-year-old from Hazyview, Mpumalanga, shared his transformative journey at the University of Mpumalanga (UMP), marked by resilience and achievement. Raised by a single parent, he pursued a BSc in Agriculture, inspired by his mother's guidance.

"I owe my academic success to the relentless mentorship of Prof Victor Mlambo, Prof Pakama Siyongwana, and the Vice-Chancellor Professor Thoko Mayekiso at UMP," Mashiloane expressed, acknowledging the pivotal role of his mentors.

Reflecting on the Vice Chancellor's Scholarship, which he received for three consecutive years, he said, "The benefits, including a monthly stipend, on-campus accommodation, and leadership training, shaped my views and inspired me to become an influential leader."

During his undergraduate journey, he earned Academic Merit awards and participated in events such as the Universities Business Challenge. The International Summer Institute programme in Canada in 2019, he noted, "kindled hope and inspiration in the hearts of many Black African students at UMP." Professor Siyongwana's mentorship was transformative. "She instilled confidence and resilience in me," he remarked.

From a Geography researcher to an ATSP fellow, Mashiloane now serves in UMP's first cohort of ATSP Fellows. His MSc research, funded by the National Research Foundations and UMP, focused on the: Black mulberry fruit powder as a nutraceutical source. In 2023, he celebrated the publication of his first reviewed paper, showcasing a sustainable poultry production strategy using black soldier fly larvae.

Encouraging other students, Mashiloane said: "The magnitude of your attitude will determine your altitude. If anyone desires to inspire, they need to continue to desire, but if they don't desire, they will expire."

ATSP Fellow and Associate Lecturer in the Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Sciences (FANS) and the School of Agricultural Sciences, Moses Zakhele Sithole, is currently pursuing a PhD in Agriculture.

Growing up in a rural area with non-educated parents, Sithole values his stepfather who ensured he received an education. Excelling academically from grade one to grade 12, he became the top student, earning numerous awards. Despite a large classroom in the first year, Sithole successfully passed and later became a mentor, tutoring first-year students. This role led to a significant meeting with the University's Management.

Encouraged by classmates, Sithole ran for an SRC position and was elected SRC President. While his presidency faced challenges, including a moment when he considered stepping down, he persevered and was recognized as SRC member of the year at the UMP Co-Curricular Awards.

Studying at UMP provided Sithole with opportunities, including a benchmarking visit to Kenya, where he experienced diverse lifestyles and cultural shocks. Enrolled in his Master's in Agriculture in 2021, he was appointed to the Academic Talent Stewardship Programme (ATSP) and became part of the first UMP ATSP Cohort.

Reflecting on his journey, Sithole expressed, "Being part of the ATSP is a dream come true. I can actually see my dreams becoming a reality. I’m honoured and humbled."

He sees the ATSP as a stepping-stone toward becoming a professional academic, hoping to develop his talents and become an effective and efficient professional in the field.

Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Thoko Mayekiso, emphasised, “Let us consistently remind those for whom we are creating opportunities about the paramount importance of discipline, unwavering determination, and fostering a drive to succeed. We must offer continuous encouragement, especially when motivation wavers, urging them to keep their egos in check and maintain humility. Let's actively discourage complacency, instil a mindset of seizing opportunities rather than waiting for them, and inspire a culture of creating opportunities where none exist.”

In her opening address, Vice-Chancellor Professor Thoko Mayekiso expressed sentiments of continued celebration. "On this final day of our festivities, we wish they could linger a bit longer. However, as you know, we've been at it since August, and today concludes our modest celebration. We extend a warm welcome to the council members, chairperson of the Council, staff, students, our families, and friends joining us today for a day of speeches. Yesterday, we had our speeches, and I trust you were attentive. Today is for us to revel in enjoyment. Without dwelling on formalities, she added, "I won't say much, just welcome. Shed off your jackets, relax, and relish the moment. To our students, all the best in your upcoming exams. Let this event recharge you for the challenges ahead on Tuesday. Best wishes."

Some of the entertainment included music and dance. 

UMP's celebrated choir, known for their soulful melodies, commenced the ceremony with three enchanting songs. Various cultural musical and dance groups, representing the rich diversity of the University of Mpumalanga, including Zulu, SiSwati, isiNdebele, Venda, Bapedi, and Xhosa groups, followed suit. The cultural ensembles adorned themselves in beautiful traditional attire. Noteworthy bands like Soulful Melodies and Joy, along with the UMP cheerleaders making their debut, added to the melodic atmosphere.

UMP Staff and Students came together to celebrate the day. 

The Peer Educators conveyed the Love My Campus campaign through a musical rendition, aiming to educate students and staff about maintaining a clean campus. UMP cheerleaders presented a routine, instilling the mission and values of the University of Mpumalanga. It marked the first occasion for the cheerleaders to showcase their impressive skills. The ceremony concluded with a musical performance by a local band, accompanied by a delicious spread of braai food.
