Leading the academic project is Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Teaching and Learning, Professor Mashudu Davhana-Maselesele, who plays a crucial role in making this vision a reality by shaping UMP’s academic strategy and ensuring its alignment with national and institutional goals.
“My role involves providing both strategic leadership and operational oversight to enhance excellence in teaching and learning. A key part of my mandate is to drive the intellectual and strategic agenda in line with UMP’s goals and the National Plan for Higher Education. My focus is on improving the quality of education to increase the success rate of our graduates,” she explains.
With UMP growing rapidly, Professor Davhana-Maselesele is also responsible for developing and launching new academic programmes, ensuring that they align with the University’s vision while meeting the evolving needs of students and the country.
“Through these efforts, I facilitate the development of an academic plan that defines UMP’s future size and shape,” she says.
Inclusive Participation
Professor Davhana-Maselesele believes that for UMP to achieve its academic vision, it is crucial to create an environment where academic staff can thrive and grow.
“To ensure that lecturers have the right tools and conditions to foster a top-class learning environment, UMP is committed to providing targeted workshops and seminars, collaborating with experts, and encouraging participation in relevant teaching and learning conferences. We also offer financial support to help staff expand their knowledge base and skills.”
She further highlights that UMP actively supports academic staff in pursuing the Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education, a qualification designed to empower lecturers with a deep understanding of higher education pedagogy, equipping them with both the theoretical foundation and practical tools needed to excel in their teaching.
“We also acknowledge outstanding teaching through awards and incentives, while providing our lecturers with modern technologies like smart classrooms within the iconic, state-of-the-art infrastructure we have at the university,” she states.
The same commitment extends to students at UMP, where Professor Davhana-Maselesele emphasises the importance of creating a safe, inclusive, and welcoming learning environment where all students feel valued, respected, and empowered to excel.
“We instil the values of the University in our students. UMP’s values are excellence, inspiration, relevance, adaptability, collaboration, diversity, and integrity. Our commitment to holistic student development extends beyond academics.
Through our Academic Support Services Division, we offer programmes such as tutorship and mentorship to support students’ academic success. We believe in keeping students engaged and creating opportunities for them to thrive in all aspects of university life.”
UMP acknowledges outstanding teaching through rewards and incentives.
Enhanced Learning Experience
Student involvement is central to UMP’s philosophy, and the University actively encourages participation in decision-making processes, including curriculum development and campus initiatives through the Student Representative Council (SRC), which serves on key university committees.
“Our graduate attributes serve as a guiding framework. These are introduced during orientation and reinforced throughout their journey at UMP. These attributes include displaying critical thinking knowledge and skills, being resourceful, responsive, and responsible; showcasing innovation, entrepreneurship, and adaptability; demonstrating confidence and effectiveness in communication; and being ethically and socially aware change-makers.
To enhance their learning experience, we provide access to cutting-edge technology for teaching and learning, ensuring students receive training on its effective use. Our well-equipped libraries and computer laboratories further support their academic endeavours, creating an environment where every student can reach their full potential.”
Professor Davhana-Maselesele asserts that collaboration is vital to growth and success.
Strategic Partnerships
Professor Davhana-Maselesele emphasises the importance of strong stakeholder engagement.
“Our partnerships with industry and community organisations have been instrumental in aligning our programmes with market needs. Moving forward, we will continue to strengthen these collaborations to ensure UMP remains at the forefront of academic excellence and innovation.” She further mentions that the focus for 2025 is expanding and enhancing professional qualifications to meet South Africa’s evolving workforce needs.
“Our priority is to develop qualifications in critical areas such as health and accounting, which will help address national skills shortages and support economic growth.
Additionally, UMP remains committed to strengthening postgraduate qualifications, ensuring they are rigorous, relevant, and aligned with both academic excellence and industry demands. We also aim to deepen our partnerships with industry stakeholders and professional bodies to ensure that our qualifications meet market requirements,” she adds.
“We also develop initiatives to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and lifelong learning in students by exposing them to different extracurricular activities.”
By focusing on these strategic imperatives, UMP continues to evolve as a leading institution in higher education, preparing students and staff for the challenges of the future while staying rooted in African knowledge systems and values.
