Doctor of Philosophy in Education

Programme Description
UMP Vision 2030 focuses on the need for our academic programmes to lead to broad based socio-economic development. In alignment with this, the Faculty of Education introduced the M Ed in 2020, and B Ed Honours in Teaching & Learning in 2023. Introducing the PhD in Education in 2025 will further enable the UMP to meet the educational needs of SA. It is also aligned with the UMP’s mission to offer high-quality education opportunities that foster the “holistic development of students through teaching and learning, research and scholarship and engagement in collaboration with strategic partners.” This is critical because well-developed teachers touch the lives of every one of their learners. To teach is to lead.
The purpose of the PhD is to provide students with training for an academic career through an independent, original, and applied basic primary research project completed under supervision. Graduates will become the next generation of highly skilled individuals, teaching professionals, and educationists who will join the workforce as academics and researchers, and contribute to the development of society. Reflective teaching practice, as well as active research on teaching methodologies and assessment, motivate change and innovation. Better qualified teachers with greater critical thinking and problem-solving skills, will enable greater social cohesion; transform teaching practices; and act as change agents within a society that is fractured socially, economically and politically. Through their PhD research, they will know the intrinsic value that to teach is to lead.
