Bachelor of Arts Honours in Archaeology

Programme description

The BA Honours in Archaeology programme is a 1 year full-time, 120 credits and NQF exit level 8 qualification which includes compulsory modules. It provides an important route for progression into further postgraduate studies, Masters and Doctoral for those who wish to continue with their studies at the University of Mpumalanga or elsewhere.
The BA Honours in Archaeology is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of human prehistory, grounded in an understanding of methodological and theoretical frameworks. The programme will equip students to contribute meaningfully to the preservation and understanding of African and global heritage. Additionally, it prepares students for adaptive and contemporary approaches within Archaeology, positioning them to contribute to both local and international archaeological discussions and to pursue careers that make tangible impacts in heritage research, preservation, tourism, museum curation, and education.
The Honours programme teaches graduates to analyse material remains, engage in fieldwork, and develop skills in critical report writing—essential for the professional practice of archaeology. It uses a hands-on, applied approach to teaching Archaeology that will foster research skills, problem-solving abilities, and a respect for the diversity and depth of the human experience.
