The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing quality mathematics education by hosting the 31st Annual National Congress of the Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa (AMESA).
The congress brought together more than 1 100 mathematics educators, researchers, curriculum specialists, policymakers, postgraduate students and education stakeholders from across South Africa and beyond to collaborate on improving mathematics teaching and learning, while contributing to the development of future scientists, engineers, innovators and problem-solvers.
Held under the theme, Breaking Barriers Through Innovation Towards Vision 2030 and Beyond, the five-day congress provided a national platform for delegates to exchange research, showcase innovative teaching practices, strengthen partnerships and explore practical solutions to challenges facing mathematics education in South Africa.
Shared commitment to transforming mathematics education
Head of the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at UMP, Professor Ntombovuyo Wayi-Mgwebi, emphasised the importance of mathematics in shaping South Africa’s future.
“Mathematics is the language of science, technology, engineering and economic development. Strengthening mathematics education is not merely an educational imperative but a national priority,” she said, explaining that the congress theme reflects the realities facing South Africa’s education sector, including persistent inequalities, learner performance challenges and the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
AMESA President Ms Nkhensani Duba said the congress represented a renewed commitment to ensuring that mathematics education remains accessible and relevant for future generations.
“This gathering is a reaffirmation of our shared commitment to shaping the future of our learners and our nation,” she noted that the challenges facing mathematics education require collective action and innovation.
The congress provided an opportunity for educators and researchers to explore how mathematics can contribute to addressing broader societal challenges.
“Our theme this year, Breaking Barriers Through Innovation Towards Vision 2030 and Beyond, could not be timelier. We meet at a moment when mathematics faces unprecedented challenges in our schools. The growing number of institutions that no longer offer mathematics at the FET phase is a sobering reminder of the barriers we must confront," said Ms Duba that the collaboration was essential to improving access, changing perceptions and expanding opportunities.
“Together, we must break down the barriers of access, perception and opportunity so that every learner, regardless of background, can experience the power and promise of mathematics.”
Mpumalanga drives mathematics, science and technology development
Delivering the keynote address through a recorded message, Mpumalanga MEC for Education, Honourable Lindi Lettie Masina, commended AMESA for creating a platform that advances mathematics education nationally, reaffirming the provincial government’s commitment to strengthening mathematics, science and technology education as key drivers of South Africa’s future growth and competitiveness.
“Mathematics, science and technology remain central to South Africa’s future growth and global competitiveness. We must improve learner performance, increase participation in mathematics and develop the skilled workforce our country requires.”
The MEC outlined Mpumalanga’s strategy for improving mathematics education, which focuses on strengthening foundational numeracy in the early grades, increasing learner participation beyond Grade 9, investing in teacher development and curriculum support, and expanding learner support through extra classes, digital learning platforms and structured academic interventions.
Honourable Masina also reported encouraging progress, noting that the provincial mathematics pass rate improved from 52.8% in 2022 to 66.37% in 2024, and highlighted the importance of language in mathematics education.
“Many learners are taught mathematics in a language they do not fully understand, creating unnecessary cognitive barriers. We must strengthen research and classroom practices that promote mother tongue-based bilingual education.”
She further announced that the province has allocated R78 million towards the OR Tambo Mathematics, Science and Technology Academy to strengthen learner participation in critical subjects while supporting learners and teachers who continue to excel nationally and internationally.
The event was aimed at inspiring innovative thinking and strengthening mathematics education.
Sharing knowledge to strengthen classroom practice
Director Dr Yves Semegni said the congress provides an opportunity for educators and researchers to exchange ideas and explore how mathematics can contribute to addressing broader societal challenges.
He said mathematics has an important role to play in breaking barriers, reducing poverty and driving scientific innovation towards achieving the National Development Plan 2030 and the African Union Agenda 2063.
Reminding delegates that mathematics remains a foundation of science and technology, Dr Semegni urged educators to nurture curiosity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills among learners.
AMESA Mpumalanga Regional Chairperson Mr Nkosinathi Nkambule said the congress aims to strengthen teachers’ conceptual understanding, enhance teaching strategies and improve learner participation and performance in mathematics and related subjects.
He said the gathering of more than 1 100 mathematics professionals provides educators with an opportunity to engage with leading researchers, participate in practical workshops and share classroom experiences.
Mr Nkambule encouraged greater participation in the practical “How I Teach” sessions, noting that these sessions provide teachers with effective strategies that can be applied directly in classrooms.
Highlighting the growing membership of AMESA in Mpumalanga, he encouraged mathematics educators to become active members of the association and continue promoting mathematics through initiatives such as Pi Day celebrations.
The 31st AMESA National Congress featured keynote addresses, research presentations, workshops, exhibitions and collaborative discussions aimed at inspiring innovative thinking, strengthening mathematics education and contributing towards achieving South Africa’s Vision 2030.
