Programme Description
A PhD in Tourism and Hospitality Management prepares students for advanced research, academic, and leadership roles in the tourism and hospitality industry. UMP Vision 2030 focuses on the need for our academic programmes to lead to broad based socio-economic development. In alignment with this, the Faculty of Economics, Development and Business Sciences introduced the Master of Tourism and Hospitality Management in 2024.The PhD in Tourism and Hospitality Management will further enable the UMP to meet the educational needs of South Africa. It is also aligned with the UMP’s mission to offer high-quality education opportunities that foster the “holistic development of students through teaching and learning, research and scholarship and engagement in collaboration with strategic partners.”

The purpose of the PhD in Tourism and Hospitality Management is to provide students with training for an academic career through an independent, original, and applied basic primary research project completed under supervision. Graduates will become the next generation of highly skilled individuals, teaching professionals, and educationists who will join the workforce as academics and researchers and contribute to the development of society. Reflective teaching practice, as well as active research on teaching methodologies and assessment, motivate change and innovation. Students explore topics such as management and marketing theories, customer service theories and models, sustainable practices, research methodology, digital transformation and technology impacts on tourism, and hospitality services management. The program culminates in a thesis, including literature review, methodology, data analysis, findings, and conclusions. Graduates acquire cognitive and technical skills essential for conducting high-level research and contributing to industry knowledge.

The programme produces highly qualified researchers with greater critical thinking and problem-solving skills, that enable greater social cohesion; transformation practices; and act as change agents within tourism and hospitality environment. Admission Minimum Requirements
The minimum admission requirements for the PhD in Education programme are:
  • A relevant NQF Level 9 Master of Tourism and Hospitality Management or any other associated field of the selection criteria determined by the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management.
  • Students will have achieved at least 60% for the research component of the master’s degree.
