The University Incubator Consortium (UNIIC) is a joint initiative between 25 universities across 11 countries in Asia and Africa that aims to build capacity in supporting start-ups, promoting the exchange of knowledge and skills, and sharing resources.

As a global collaborative initiative to advance entrepreneurship development, UNIIC offers a diverse range of opportunities for participants to take their business ideas to the next level. UNIIC’s flagship programmes include collaborative research and book writing, business pitching competitions, business modelling webinars, hackathons and sharing best practices about university incubators.

Some of the key focus areas for the Africa-Asia Roundtable Discussion included:

• Establishing frameworks for collaborative research and innovation between African and Asian universities to address shared global and regional challenges.
• Encouraging capacity building for universities to enhance their ability to engage in cutting-edge research, entrepreneurship education, and innovative practices.
• Exploring policy avenues for creating joint funding programmes to support collaborative research, innovation projects, and entrepreneurial initiatives.
• Aligning collaborative efforts to address key challenges and sustainable development, leveraging the strengths of both regions.
• Advocating for sustainable collaborations between universities through long-term agreements, joint centres of excellence, and shared innovation hubs.

UMP Vice-Chancellor Professor Thoko Mayekiso said that UMP, as the founding member, has been actively involved in UNIIC since its inception in 2022.

“The roundtable discussion aims to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange among partners to enhance research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. The hosting of this roundtable discussion could not have come at a better time for the University, as it follows our 10-year celebrations under the theme: Decade of Excellence and Creating Opportunities.”

Professor Mayekiso further said the discussion also coincides with South Africa's hosting of the G20 in 2025.

"The theme of the roundtable fits perfectly with some of the issues that the G20 will grapple with, including international financial stability, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development.”

“Indeed, we have long passed the phase where research and innovation were disconnected from the lived realities of nations. It is precisely for these reasons that universities are called upon to play their role by contributing to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

It is not difficult to appreciate that there are synergies between the Africa-Asia roundtable and the themes of solidarity, equality, and sustainable development.”

She further added: “As an engaged university, our institution places great value on partnerships, collaborations, linkages, and networks. We have identified these as both drivers and enablers in achieving our vision.

At a strategic level and in line with UMP’s Vision 2030, our goal is to make a pioneering, critical, and constructive contribution to the production and dissemination of knowledge.”

In closing, Professor Mayekiso mentioned that the institution is committed to using the university’s knowledge assets to actively and creatively promote a vibrant economic, social, and political democracy in which all sections of society, particularly the poor, can find a meaningful place.

“We strongly believe that knowledge and skills are key assets to enable effective advancement and deepening of the quality and scope of democratic life in the world,” she said.

Professor Henk de Jager, Chief Executive Officer, Technological Higher Education Network, South Africa (THENSA).

Delivering the keynote address was Professor Henk de Jager, Chief Executive Officer, Technological Higher Education Network, South Africa (THENSA), which is recognised as a vibrant, innovative consortium for advancing technology-focused institutions with a transformative societal impact.

THENSA’s mission is to facilitate and create national and international partnerships for transformation in Higher education and building capacity to achieve social and economic impact.

Professor de Jager said that THENSA’s focus is collaborations and capacity development of the 10 member institutions of higher learning in Africa.

He further mentioned that the purpose of THENSA is to build entrepreneurial universities in the Southern African Development Community and foster sustainable job creation and economic growth through entrepreneurship.

“We have created high-impact programmes with the focus of using entrepreneurship as a vehicle for transformation to address several challenges faced by the SADC region, such as low levels of job creation, start-up success and graduate employment.

The programme is aimed at building capacity within the higher education and training sector in South Africa, particularly in research innovation and commercialisation.

We also encourage knowledge exchange of best practices and business and engagement, strengthen student-led entrepreneurship ecosystems and empower students,” said Prof de Jager.

Another highlight of the Africa-Asia discussion two-day event included the launch of two books: Ecosystem and SMMEs’ Growth Trajectory: Evidence from Emerging and Transitioning Economies, and University Incubators and Startups: Evidence from Emerging and Transitioning Economies, written and edited by leading academics.

UNIIC also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the members. The agreement focuses on promoting knowledge and technology sharing between educational institutions. It will also enhance student and staff academic mobility, joint research and publications, and entrepreneurship activities.

The Discussion was attended by delegates from participating universities based in South Africa, Ghana, Egypt, Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, Eswatini and Nigeria.

UMP Vice-Chancellor Professor Thoko Mayekiso said orientation marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the student’s academic journey.

She emphasised the University’s vision of being an African university leading in sustainable development through innovation. She encouraged students to develop a positive attitude, seek help when needed, and maintain discipline.

“You are here to earn a qualification and prepare yourselves to serve society. Your primary focus should be on your studies. Participate in co-curricular activities, but always keep sight of why you are here,” she advised.

Professor Mayekiso acknowledged first-year challenges such as stress, homesickness, and financial management. She assured students that the university has systems in place to support their well-being.

“You are not alone on this journey. Seek help early, build resilience, and aspire to leadership positions. One day, some of you will be Vice-Chancellors leading institutions of higher learning,” she said.

She further mentioned the academic achievements and values of UMP, noting that the institution has achieved an impressive 85% pass rate, demonstrating its commitment to academic excellence.

“We value excellence and integrity. We celebrate diversity in all its forms, including race, age, sexual orientation, ideology, and religion.

The University also promotes graduate attributes such as critical thinking, innovation, entrepreneurship, and adaptability. Our strapline, Creating Opportunities, is more than just words – it is a call for you to unlock your potential and aspire to greatness,” she said.

The first-year students learnt more about balancing social and academic life. 

Attending the orientation was Cllr. Enoch Ishmael Terra Shabangu, the Executive Mayor of Enhlanzeni, highlighted the district’s economic landscape and the opportunities available for graduates.

“Our district is home to over 2.5 million people and is driven by key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, forestry, tourism, and hospitality. We need young, skilled professionals to drive economic growth and address challenges such as unemployment and climate change,” he said.

“We must prioritise climate action by promoting sustainable waste management, tree planting, and proper town planning. Our district encourages students to take part in e-waste recycling initiatives and contribute to building a greener future. We need future town planners, agricultural specialists, and environmental scientists to tackle the pressing issues facing our communities. Now is the time to prepare,” he said.

Speaking about Teaching and Learning Underpinnings, DVC: Teaching and Learning, Professor Mashudu Davhana Maselesele introduced UMP’s graduate attributes to the new students mentioning that the University prides itself in producing resourceful, responsive, and responsible graduates.

“We produce innovative and entrepreneurial graduates that can adapt to a changing world. Our students are confident and effective communicators, ethically and socially aware individuals critical thinkers equipped with knowledge and skills.”

Professor Davhana Maselesele further mentioned that university education is about more than just qualifying – it is about developing self-directed learning, problem-solving skills, and independent thinking.

Living and Learning: The ‘I Love My Campus’ Initiative

Speaking on Living and Learning Communities, Dean of Students Dr Paul Maminza stressed the importance of fostering a sense of community, engagement, and holistic development among students.

“Here at UMP, we are a community. We live together, do things together, succeed, and excel together. We encourage students to establish living and learning communities in residences, sports facilities, and across campus. These communities create a support system that enhances academic and social development,” he said.

Dr Paul Maminza further explained the significance of student engagement and wellbeing. He introduced the ‘I Love My Campus’ campaign, aimed at promoting student engagement and community spirit.

“University is not just about lectures – it is about building networks, participating in activities, and creating a home away from home. We urge you to take full advantage of the resources and opportunities available," he said.

SRC President, Mr Hlompho Prosper Chiloane, further added that university life, especially at UMP, is an extraordinary experience.

“It’s a time to explore, to push boundaries, and to find out who you are and what you stand for. By joining a society or structure, you will not only be contributing to a vibrant campus, but also to your personal growth.

But, like any journey worth taking, it will have its challenges. There will be late nights, unexpected obstacles, and moments when you might feel overwhelmed. In those times, remember that you’re not alone. Seek help when you need it, whether from your lecturers, support staff, psychologists, or even the SRC. The UMP community is here to support you,” he said.

Mr Chiloane further advised students to prioritise their studies, “But do not let them consume your entire life. Make friends, join societies, and attend events. Use this time to discover who you are.”

The five-day orientation programme offered presentations, talks, campus tours and hands-on activities, all meant to help students familiarise themselves with their new environment, make them feel at home, create a sense of belonging and prepare them for the task ahead.

Established in December 2021, the Intangible Cultural Heritage National Authentication Panel is comprised of experts including academics tasked with authenticating and safeguarding South Africa’s intangible cultural heritage. Their work is critical to preserving the traditions, practices, and knowledge systems that define the nation’s cultural identity.

Dr Bhuda’s reappointment is a testament to her extensive contributions to the field of Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS). Her relationship with the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture began in 2014 when she received a bursary to focus on IKS. Since then, she has become a leading voice in cultural preservation and advocacy.

In 2021, she became the youngest member of the panel at the age of 28. Reflecting on her journey, Dr Bhuda remarked, “When I was first appointed, it was both a challenge and an honour. I believed then and still do that Indigenous Knowledge Systems are essential to the future of South Africa. This reappointment reassures me that I am on the right path, and I am proud to continue contributing to this important work.”

Her early involvement with the panel saw her actively shaping policies that promote the integration and preservation of intangible cultural heritage in South Africa.

“Some of the suggestions we made during my first term have already been implemented, and that is deeply fulfilling. This work is about more than just preserving traditions — it’s about ensuring that our heritage remains a living, evolving part of our society.”

Her nomination for reappointment was spearheaded by the Mpumalanga Provincial Government, a recognition of her tireless advocacy and leadership. She expressed gratitude to those who supported her nomination, stating, “I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Nkangala District Municipality leadership, the MEC for Culture, Sport, and Recreation, and the entire Mpumalanga Provincial Government for believing in my potential. Their recognition and support are not only a personal honour but also a validation of the importance of IKS in our province and beyond.”

Notable Contribution

Dr Bhuda is also a member of the Language Policy Committee at UMP, which develops policies aligned with the Department of Higher Education and Training’s standards. This work supports UMP’s commitment to fostering multilingualism and promoting Indigenous languages as an integral part of academic life.

“Being part of the Language Policy Committee is a continuation of my efforts to elevate indigenous knowledge and languages. Language is a cornerstone of culture, and ensuring its survival is just as important as preserving other forms of heritage.

“There is still so much work to be done. Policies must not only exist but also be actively implemented to protect and promote our intangible cultural heritage. This is where panels like ours come in to advise, advocate, and ensure that our cultural wealth is not lost but shared and celebrated.”

As she embarks on her second term with the Intangible Cultural Heritage National Authentication Panel, Dr Bhuda is resolute in her mission: “It is an honour to serve on this panel and to represent indigenous people in these critical spaces. Our culture and knowledge are treasures, and it’s our responsibility to ensure they are preserved, respected, and celebrated for generations to come.”

Dr Bhuda will remain on the Intangible Cultural Heritage National Authentication Panel until 30 November 2027.

Dean of Students, Dr Paul Maminza, opened the ceremony with a focus on the importance of student governance at UMP.

“As student leaders, your existence within the University is not by chance but by law,” he said, referencing the Higher Education Act and the UMP statute that governs the role of student leaders.

He also highlighted the University's commitment to fostering continuous engagement with student leaders through various platforms, such as quarterly MANCO-SRC meetings, monthly meetings with the Dean of Students and Student Affairs Managers, and regular Campus Director-CRC meetings.

“With these structures in place, there should be no reason for student leaders to struggle to raise concerns with management. Protests should be a last resort when multiple avenues for engagement exist.”

Dr Maminza reinforced the importance of collaborative and proactive leadership that seeks support when challenges arise.

“Leadership is a contested space, and your decisions will be scrutinised. However, with the right mindset and effective use of engagement platforms, you can succeed. Our goal is for each of you to reach the end of your term with a sense of accomplishment. If challenges arise, seek guidance rather than falter. We are here to support you,” he said.

UMP Vice-Chancellor Professor Thoko Mayekiso said the investiture of the SRC and CRC is an important occasion for the institution. It marks the beginning of a collaborative effort between student leadership and the University to serve the student body effectively.

Professor Mayekiso also spoke about the importance of self-mastery. “Great leaders are open-minded, empathetic, and balanced in their decision-making. You must remain firm in your principles, yet open to dialogue, and always strive for solutions that benefit all stakeholders. It is essential to be informed and to use technology responsibly, ensuring your actions reflect positively on the university," she added.

“As leaders, you are the face of the University. Your engagement, both publicly and online, affects the image of UMP. It is crucial to engage in constructive dialogue and avoid airing grievances in the public sphere. A united voice enhances our reputation and attracts valuable support.”

Finally, the Vice-Chancellor reiterated UMP’s commitment to supporting student leaders. “We maintain an open-door policy, and I encourage you to engage with management on leadership, academic, and personal development matters. Your growth is important to us.”

Following Dr Maminza’s welcome and Professor Mayekiso’s address, the newly elected members of the SRC and CRCs took the Oath of Office, committing themselves to the responsibilities of leadership. This symbolic moment marked the beginning of their term in office.

Mr Hlompho Prosper Chiloane, the newly elected SRC President, expressed his deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve his peers. He acknowledged the responsibility that comes with student leadership, extending his thanks to the students who participated in the election process.

Mr Chiloane spoke about the core values that would guide the 2025 SRC, including excellence, integrity, and inclusivity. “Let this SRC be remembered as one that not only spoke about change but created it,” he said, emphasising the SRC’s commitment to addressing student concerns, such as financial barriers and mental health.

He also referenced the history of student activism in South Africa, acknowledging the sacrifices made by past generations of student leaders. “The UMP SRC is not just a representative council – it is a movement,” he stated, highlighting the role the SRC plays in advocating for students’ rights and creating lasting change.

Urging his fellow SRC members to approach their leadership with humility and service, Mr Chiloane concluded that: “Leadership is a selfless pursuit,” he said, quoting uMam’ Charlotte Maxeke: “This work is not for yourselves… If you are to rise, bring someone with you.”

The inauguration of the 2025 SRC and CRC leadership marks the beginning of a new chapter for student governance at UMP. With the support of university management and a strong commitment to student advocacy, the leadership is poised to tackle the challenges of the year ahead.

The concept of One Health has emerged as a transformative approach to addressing the intricate connections between human, animal, and environmental health. This integrated framework highlights the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in solving some of the most pressing global challenges.

From disease prevention to environmental sustainability, One Health is gaining traction across sectors. Yet, as Dr Nduku asserts, its application in poultry production remains underexplored.

“Poultry farming is at the crossroads of human health, animal welfare, and environmental sustainability. By adopting a One Health perspective, we can uncover new opportunities to enhance food security while addressing critical challenges such as zoonotic diseases and antimicrobial resistance.”

South Africa’s poultry industry is a cornerstone of its agricultural sector, contributing significantly to food security, economic growth, and job creation. As the fastest-growing source of animal protein, poultry farming – from broiler meat to egg production – has become vital in meeting the country's nutritional needs. Chicken has cemented its position as South Africa’s most consumed protein. Dr Nduku describes this as both an opportunity and a responsibility.

“Poultry production plays a dual role in addressing protein shortages and improving nutrition. However, to sustain this growth, we must critically examine the environmental and health implications of intensive farming practices.”

The intensification of poultry farming to meet rising urban demand has brought about significant benefits, including increased productivity and shorter production cycles. Yet, it also presents challenges. High-density poultry farming environments increase the likelihood of disease outbreaks and often necessitate the use of subtherapeutic antibiotics to prevent infections.

Dr Nduku is keenly aware of the risks. “The overuse of antibiotics in poultry farming is a double-edged sword,” she explains. “While it boosts productivity, it also contributes to the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), posing a significant threat to public health. The emergence of drug-resistant bacteria not only impacts the poultry sector but also spills over into human populations.”

This growing issue has sparked concerns among consumers and scientists alike. Many worry about the potential presence of harmful drug residues in poultry products and the long-term consequences of AMR on human health.

Collaborative Power

Beyond antibiotic use, Dr Nduku emphasises the importance of addressing environmental sustainability within the poultry sector. “Sustainable practices, such as waste-to-energy technologies and the proper management of poultry manure, can significantly reduce the industry’s ecological footprint." 

By converting poultry litter into renewable energy through biogas production or using it as a natural fertiliser, the sector can align with broader environmental goals. Additionally, exploring alternative feed ingredients, such as insect protein and agricultural by-products, can alleviate the strain on conventional crop production.

 “When integrating responsible environmental management into poultry farming, we can reduce pollution, support biodiversity, and enhance public and animal health. “Such practices exemplify the One Health approach in action.”

The path forward for South Africa’s poultry industry is clear: collaboration is key. Dr Nduku advocates for partnerships across disciplines, bringing together animal scientists, veterinarians, ecologists, policymakers, and poultry producers.

“Shared knowledge is our most valuable tool in addressing the complexities of poultry production within a One Health framework. By working together, we can ensure that poultry farming remains a sustainable contributor to food security, environmental health, and public well-being.”

In rethinking poultry production, the One Health perspective offers a powerful lens through which to navigate the interconnected challenges of our time. As Dr Nduku’s insights suggest, the poultry industry has the potential to lead the way in demonstrating how integrated strategies can benefit all – humans, animals, and the planet alike.

Dr Xola Nduku is a Lecturer in Animal Production at the School of Agricultural Sciences at the University of Mpumalanga. She holds a PhD in Agriculture (Animal Science). Her research focus is on the impact of production factors and nutrition on animal performance and health, with an emphasis on promoting the safe production of animal products for human consumption. Dr Nduku has actively participated in various scientific activities, presented papers at local and international conferences, and attended numerous workshops. She regularly engages with industry stakeholders, fostering the exchange of knowledge and ideas on the latest developments in animal agriculture.

Professor Naicheng Wu, a Full Research Professor at Ningbo University, China, and Director of Physical Geography, discussed how human activities have altered watershed flow regimes and degraded habitats. These changes have precipitated a rapid decline in biodiversity, undermined ecosystem functionality, reduced stability and resilience, and ultimately jeopardised human well-being and the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Professor Wu highlighted that aquatic biodiversity in rivers is declining at a significantly faster rate than that of terrestrial and marine ecosystems. He emphasised the importance of studying watershed hydrological processes and river biodiversity, which has become a critical scientific challenge for sustainable development.

"Therefore, it is of great significance to study the hydrological processes of watersheds and river biodiversity, which has become a key scientific issue facing the sustainable development of mankind," he said.

Using an interdisciplinary approach, Professor Wu’s presentation explored how catchment hydrological variables influence riverine algal communities. His research examines the impacts and underlying mechanisms affecting riverine algal composition and biodiversity under changing flow regimes.

During his visit, Prof Wu explored several South African river systems, including the Crocodile River, Luvuvhu River, and rivers in Kruger National Park (Sabie, Sand, and Olifants), to gain a deeper understanding of local ecosystems. This fieldwork is expected to pave the way for future collaborations in aquatic ecology between South Africa and China.

About Professor Naicheng Wu

Professor Naicheng Wu is a Full Research Professor at Ningbo University, China, and the Director of Physical Geography. He earned his PhD in 2012 from Kiel University, Germany, and completed his habilitation/tenure in January 2019 at the same institution. He has held postdoctoral research fellowships in Denmark and the United States.

In 2016, he received the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship, and in 2019, he was awarded the Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers. His research focuses on ecohydrology, including using integrated ecohydrology models to investigate the effects of human activities such as dam construction and land-use changes on aquatic ecosystems.

As a Principal Investigator, Professor Wu has managed numerous national and international grants since 2019 and has published 140 peer-reviewed papers in leading ISI-rated journals, including the Journal of Ecology, Water Research, and Journal of Biogeography. He has supervised 20 PhD and MSc students.

The Enhlanzeni Star School is a skills development centre that also provides computer literacy training and equips young people with the tools to excel academically and professionally. It is built on the principle of second chances that offers learners the opportunity to reshape their future.

The school's impact and innovation have attracted support from major partners such as Buscor, SAPPI, and RCL Foods, contributing to its growth and sustainability.

Enhlanzeni Star School, founded by a UMP student, won the 2024 National Presidential MSME & Cooperatives Breaking Ground SMME of the Year Award.

The Star School was recently recognised on a national stage when it won the 2024 National Presidential MSME & Cooperatives Breaking Ground SMME of the Year Award. It competed against over 400 entrants and stood out for its innovative approach to education and skills development.

Mr Masilela's journey through the competition was marked by significant milestones. After securing victories at the regional and provincial levels, he represented Mpumalanga at the national finals, competing against the country’s top-performing MSMEs and cooperatives. Out of ten finalists, Enhlanzeni Star School earned an impressive fourth place, further cementing its reputation as a leader in social enterprise.

“This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of my team, as well as the incredible support from the UMP Centre for Entrepreneurship and Rapid Incubation (UMPCFERI). Their mentorship and resources have been pivotal in helping us scale our impact and realise our vision. UMP has been more than just a university for me – it’s been a partner in my entrepreneurial journey,” he said.

As Enhlanzeni Star School continues to grow, it stands as a testament to the power of vision, resilience, and community support. Under Masilela’s leadership and with the backing of UMPCFERI, the school is not only transforming lives but also setting a benchmark for social enterprises across the country. 

“My goal is to see Enhlanzeni Star School become a national leader in education and skills development. We want to continue empowering young people to unlock their potential and create brighter futures. This journey is just the beginning," he says.

Mr Masilela is determined to expand the school's reach and impact. His ambitious plans include establishing a combined school and skills development centre in Plaston, Mpumalanga, to provide holistic education and practical training.

Name: Sinorita Chauke (Master of Science)

Topic: Exploring Indigenous Plants for Medicinal and Nutritional Benefits

Ms Sinorita Chauke, a Master of Science student, is making notable progress in her research on indigenous plants under the guidance of Dr Tshepiso Ndlovu. Her pioneering work investigates the medicinal and nutritional properties of indigenous plants traditionally used by local communities to treat various ailments.

“We work on medicinal plants and indigenous foods, analysing their elemental compositions about soil samples and their nutritional components, such as proteins, carbohydrates, and fibres,” explains Ms Chauke.

A key focus of her study is the antibacterial activity of indigenous plant species. She is testing plant extracts against Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa – two bacteria associated with infections – and her findings are promising.

“Some extracts exhibit excellent antioxidant activity, addressing ailments caused by oxidative stress. Others display strong antibacterial properties, which could aid in developing treatments for skin infections and related disorders,” she says.

Her work includes ethnobotanical surveys, documenting medicinal plants used in communities for treating various ailments. Her research not only preserves traditional knowledge but also lays the foundation for new medical and nutritional applications of indigenous flora.

Ms Chauke's contributions underscore the untapped potential of indigenous plants to promote health and well-being, advancing science while honouring traditional practices.

Research Interest: Addressing Environmental and Social Challenges

Mr Hlangano Mahori, a geography student, represents a collaborative team of four researchers conducting studies that address critical environmental and socio-economic challenges in Mpumalanga Province. Their research encompasses five significant areas:

• Green Urban Spaces in Mbombela: This study analyses vegetation change in Mbombela over three decades (1993–2023) using the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). It highlights shifts in vegetation health and their implications for sustainable urban development.
• Drought Patterns in Mpumalanga: By employing the Precipitation Evaporation Index and rainfall data, this research examines drought trends across the province. The findings provide valuable insights for developing climate adaptation strategies.
• Challenges in Informal Settlements: The Case of Juju Valley: This study explores the growth of Juju Valley as an informal settlement, identifying socio-economic factors influencing its development. It sheds light on the challenges faced by residents, contributing to informed community development strategies.
• Water Service Delivery and Sustainable Development Goals: Focusing on areas such as Kanyamazane, Dantjie, and Kabokweni, this research evaluates water service delivery challenges and offers solutions to align with the Sustainable Development Goal of clean water and sanitation.
• Transformation of Rural Housing in Mbombela Municipality: This study examines changes in housing in Kanyamazane over the past decade, revealing a shift from traditional rural designs to modern urban styles, reflecting socio-economic progress.

Name: Kingsley Dlamini (Master of Science)

Research Topic: Investigating the Role of Lions in Ecosystem Dynamics

Mr Kingsley Dlamini, a Master of Science student supervised by Professor Daniel Parker, is studying the ecological impact of lions (Panthera leo) on the behaviour and population dynamics of their prey in the Eastern Cape.

His research focuses on how apex predators influence prey species' population structures and behaviours, particularly their vigilance.

“Predators like lions create a ‘landscape of fear,’ shaping prey population demographics and behavioural responses,” he notes.

Mr Dlamini's work highlights the role of apex predators in maintaining ecosystem balance. “This research demonstrates the ripple effects apex predators have on ecosystems. Understanding these dynamics allows us to better manage and conserve biodiversity in protected areas,” he explains.

Name: Buhlebenkosi Twala (Master of Science)

Research Topic: Exploring Water Impoundments’ Effects on Elephants in Kruger National Park

Ms Buhlebenkosi Twala, a Master of Science candidate under the supervision of Professor Dan Parker and Robert McCleery, investigates the ecological effects of water impoundments on African elephants (Loxodonta Africana) in Kruger National Park.

“My research examines the seasonal distribution of elephants about water impoundments,” she explains that her study emphasises the importance of water availability and seasonality in shaping elephant movements and habitat use.

“In the dry season, elephants depend on permanent water sources, while in the wet season, they roam further afield for better-quality food.

Her research provides valuable insights into the ecological impacts of water management practices in protected areas, supporting the sustainable management of elephant populations and their habitats. “Balancing wildlife conservation with ecosystem health is crucial,” she says.

The two publications: Ecosystem and SMMEs Growth Trajectory: Evidence from Emerging and Transitioning Economies and University Incubators and Startups: Evidence from Emerging and Transitioning Economies provide critical insights into the role of entrepreneurship, small business development, and innovation in tackling economic challenges in emerging economies.

Speaking at the launch, UMP’s Dean of the Faculty of Economic Development and Business Studies, Professor Vusi Gumede, acknowledged the dedication and efforts of the publications' editors and contributors. 

“Writing a book is a bumpy process, and it is always rewarding to see the final product. The process can be unpredictable, and there is no guarantee that a book will be accessible at the right time. We must congratulate the editors for taking on such an important academic endeavour,” said Professor Gumede, emphasising the importance of entrepreneurship in addressing key societal issues.

“If we can get small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) to function effectively in Africa, we can solve many challenges, including unemployment and poverty. Innovation plays a major role in advancing societies, and these books highlight the crucial role startups and entrepreneurs play in economic growth and community development.

Universities are actively contributing to knowledge generation. The work done by incubators in different institutions – including ours – demonstrates the impact research and innovation can have on society. These books are an important step towards addressing real-world economic issues,” he said.

The two books were launched during the Africa-Asia Roundtable held at the Mbombela Campus.

The books were edited by UMP Vice-Chancellor Professor Thoko Mayekiso, Professor Kanayo Ogujiuba, Dr Angelina Yee Seow Voon, and Dr Ehsan Muhammad. One of the editors, Director of Research & Enterprise at the Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation, Dr Angelina Yee Seow Voon, shared insights into the book’s journey from idea to publication.

“This project started as an academic collaboration beyond our usual entrepreneurship activities with students. We wanted to create a publication that would contribute to global research on university incubators and small businesses.

Even though the book has undergone three rounds of editing, we are still refining it to ensure it is of the highest quality. This process has taught us the importance of persistence and collaboration in academic research,” she added.

“By working together, universities can strengthen their research impact. This book is a result of an International Research Network (IRN) initiative, which aligns with global university rankings and research excellence. We currently have seven joint projects in progress and five more in the pipeline. We look forward to more collaborations that will contribute to future Scopus-indexed publications." 

The launch of the two books marks a significant achievement for UMP, UNIIC, and the global research community, reinforcing the UMP’s role in advancing entrepreneurship, business incubation, and innovation.

Dr Munyai’s presentation highlighted the ecological significance of wetlands, emphasising their role in supporting biodiversity and their susceptibility to climate change.

The Forum, organised by the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) in collaboration with the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), offers participants a platform to share their work, explore potential collaborations, and engage in discussions on science, technology, and innovation.

Dr Munyai’s study, titled Impact of Climate Change on Floodplain Wetlands within the Protected Region of Kruger National Park, focuses on practical solutions for wetland conservation, the importance of community involvement, and the potential for scaling adaptive practices across BRICS nations.

“My study was commended for its relevance to global efforts to enhance climate resilience and biodiversity conservation. The Forum and Congress provided an invaluable opportunity for knowledge exchange and capacity building. Participating in the Forum allowed me to showcase my research and also facilitated connections with fellow scientists and experts in Environmental Sciences,” he said.

The Forum featured a combination of workshops, discussions, and presentations addressing global scientific challenges. During the first two days, participants engaged in thematic sessions on climate change, sustainable development, artificial intelligence, and biotechnology.

Hosted at Sirius University, the Forum convened emerging researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss critical global challenges and opportunities for innovation across the BRICS+ nations. It serves as a collaborative platform for young scientists from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS+).

Dr Munyai noted that presenting at the Forum sparked thoughtful dialogue among delegates, who recognised the practical implications of his research.

“The experience has broadened my perspective and understanding of international collaboration and opened doors for future partnerships."

Dr Munyai was selected to attend the event after responding to the BRICS Young Scientist Call issued by ASSAf.
