Gala dinner to bid farewell to the 2019 SRC/CRC and usher in new leadership

It was a night of glitz and glamour at the Orange Restaurant in Mbombela when UMP hosted a gala dinner to bid farewell the outgoing SRC/CRC and usher in those that are taking over the student leadership reigns. Vice-Chancellor Professor Thoko Mayekiso described the 2019 SRC leadership as having laid a solid foundation for future generations of student leadership at UMP. "You ladies and gentlemen took leadership at a time full of tumult and despair. Academic programmes were disrupted, and the futures of many students put on a path full of peril."

UMP is growing in leaps and bounds. Five new courses have been added in 2020. The university is in the process of channelling all systems to accommodate new applications following the approval of five new courses by the Department of Higher Education.

The University of Mpumalanga is channelling all systems to accommodate new applications following the approval of five new courses by the Department of Higher Education. Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic, Professor Richard Bernard says these courses are testimony that UMP is growing in leaps and bounds. He shares more information about the courses, entry requirements and how the programmes are aligned to the 4th Industrial Revolution.



GERMAN STUDENTS ENJOY STUDYING AT UMP

Two students from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) in Germany have chosen to study at UMP for one semester. Jadzia May and Damaris Boehm are in South Africa following a strategic partnership that was signed between the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) and Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) last year.



MINISTER DIDIZA AND UMP IN LAND REFORM DIALOGUE

Land reform is one of the most topical issues in the country at the moment, and the University of Mpumalanga is serious about tackling this subject head on. The institution engaged Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Thoko Didiza during the land reform dialogue, which was recently held at the university.



"AFROCENTRICITY IS THE ANSWER TO MANY QUESTIONS"

This is according to African-American and scholar of note, Professor Molefi Kete Asante, when he delivered his public lecture on: An Afrocentric Response to Calls for a Decolonised and Re- Africanised Education. Addressing the UMP community, Professor Kete Asante said that Afrocentric asks the question: "What would African people do if there were no white people? What natural responses would occur in relationships, attitudes toward the environment, kinship patterns, preferences for colours..."



FIRST UMP STUDENTS LEAD RESEARCH AT LAPALALA

Two UMP M.Sc. candidates have made history by becoming the first to conduct research on the reintroduction of lions and cheetah at Lapalala Wilderness Reserve in Waterberg, South Africa. This research follows the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the University of Mpumalanga, Nelson Mandela University (NMU) and the Lapalala Wilderness Foundation.



MEET THE FIRST LIMPOPO ALUMNI CHAPTER CONVENOR

The convenor of the newly formed UMP Limpopo Alumni Chapter; Rejoice Modipa has a newfound responsibility on her shoulders. We get up close and personal with this UMP brand ambassador who shares her plans and aspirations for the UMP alumni. "My biggest task is to keep the alumni up to date with the latest UMP news, support the image of the institution and its developments. I will also administer the affairs of the chapter."
