Our Strategic Plan 2022 refers to creating and supporting an environment that fosters quality and productivity in T&L, Research and Engagement. It encourages us to develop and sustain the T&L, research and Engagement capacity of staff and students and; to ensure that we conduct research that contributes to Teaching and Engagement and has impact on local, regional, national and global relevance.

One of the strategies to achieve these goals, which is consistent with the vision and mission of the University, is to recognise work of research teams, emerging and established researchers and adopt a holistic approach to research, development and innovation.

UMP Research Excellence Awards

UMP Distinguished Researcher of the Year
This gives recognition to the top researcher at UMP who made the most significant contribution towards research during the relevant reporting year.

Faculty Researcher of the Year
In this category recognition is given to a staff member who has made the most significant contribution towards research in her/his Faculty during the reporting year.

Faculty Emerging Researcher of the Year
This category recognizes the young researcher, up to Senior Lecturer level, who is active in research and has made the most significant advancement in the reporting year.

UMP Best Research Team of the Year
This category is reserved for research teams in Divisions, multidisciplinary teams across Faculties and across the University. The outputs that will be used in assessing team applications and or nominations will be as stated in section 3 above.

NRF Rated Researchers
This award is given to researchers who during the reporting year receive an NRF rating for the first time, retain their NRF rating through a re-evaluation by the NRF, and improve their NRF rating through a re-evaluation by the NRF.

Professional Support Staff Research Excellence
In this category recognition is given to a staff member from the Professional Support Divisions who has made the most significant contribution towards research during the reporting year.
