Programme Description

The aim of the qualification is to deliver professionally qualified beginner teachers for the Foundation Phase. This is done by providing student teachers with a well-rounded education that equips them with the required subject content knowledge base, teaching competence, a nuanced understanding of the integrated nature of theory and practice in education and the context of the teaching profession in South Africa. The programme focuses specifically on child development, literacy, numeracy (mathematics) and the knowledge that underpins life skills.

The focus of the Foundation Phase degree is to provide students with a professional teaching qualification. Students will be specialists in the teaching of young children in their mother-tongue language.  
 
Upon completion of this qualification, graduates will be able to:
  • Understand the organizing principles and theoretical framework underpinning childhood development. 
  • Understand childhood physical, cognitive, social, emotional and sensory development to enable them to support learners’ development in the Foundation Phase classroom. 
  • Display a coherent viewpoint of the interplay of the various roles which underlie a teacher’s professional practice, with special reference the teacher’s community and citizen role. 
  • Be able to use educational information technology to enhance the use of ICT in teaching and learning in the Foundation Phase; use blended technology as part of their teaching methodology. 
  • Be able to teach the understanding of numbers, number systems, algebra, fractions, shapes, space, measurement (mass, weight) to enable them to support children’s acquisition of the concepts. 
  • Show developed English language competence, as well as academic literacy skills in English to enable them to support English language learning in the Foundation Phase classroom. 
  • Have developed language competence and requisite subject knowledge in isiNdebele/ isiSwati/ seSotho to enable basic communication and support language learning in the Foundation Phase classroom. 
  • Have the requisite physical education content knowledge and skills to enable them to teach physical education as part of Life Skills and to particpate in and supervise/administer sport activities at school. 
  • Have an understanding of the methodology for teaching Grade R and would have had practice opportunities to develop teaching skills for the Grade R-classroom. 
  • Show skills in the essential linguistic components that are important in teaching children how to read and would have been provided with practice opportunities to develop teaching skills for teaching children to read. 
  • Display the requisite content knowledge and skills to enable them to teach music, drama, arts and craft as part of Life Skills
  • Show the requisite content knowledge and skills to teach the social science and personal well-being components of Life Skills
  • Have developed educational leadership, management and administrative skills in order to enable them to effectively lead, manage and communicate both in the classroom and between the school and home. 
  • Have an understanding of teaching methods relevant for teaching literacy and initial writing and to provide them with practice opportunities to develop teaching skills for literacy and initial writing teaching. 
  • Instil concepts of critical thinking into their teaching content. 
  • Contribute to the development of African language and culture within their community.

 

Admission Requirements

  • To be able to gain access to the Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching programme, applicants are required to have the appropriate combination of recognised National Senior Certificate (NSC) subjects, as well as certain levels of achievement in these subjects. The minimum entry requirements for studies as legislated by the government do not guarantee a prospective student admission to this programme. 
  • Preliminary admission is based on the results obtained in the final Grade 11 examination.  Final admission is based on the final Grade 12 results. 
  • A valid National Senior Certificate with admission for degree purposes
  • The subjects to be used in the calculation of the APS are the prescribed seven subjects.
  • The APS achievement rating of Life Orientation is divided by 2 in the calculation of the APS.
  • If an applicant included more than the minimum of three electives in his/her NSC the four compulsories and the three best of the electives are used.
  • Minimum APS scores of 26 with Mathematics or 27 with Mathematical

Teachers, who are in a possession of a recognised certificate in education or another relevant field, may also represent their qualifications for entry into a BEd with the possibility of transfer of credits, for cognate previous studies. Assessment of prior learning could also lead to entry or an advanced credit standing.
 
 

Career Opportunities

The graduate qualifies to become a teacher of learners from Grade R - Grade 3.
They could progress further into becoming Early Childhood Development Lecturers.
Graduates are specialists in African language instruction, namely Siswati, Sesotho and Ndebele and have potential to engage in occupations that focus on these languages.
 

Duration

The Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching programme is a four-year, 480 credit, exit level 7 qualification
