Prof Vusi Gumede

Vusi Gumede, professor and Dean for the Faculty of Economics, Development and Business Sciences at the University of Mpumalanga, has published numerous journal articles, book chapters, essays, working papers, research reports and many opinion articles as well as 16 books.

He worked in the South African government, in various capacities in different government departments, for 12 years. Prior to that he worked for various institutions as a researcher, including as an Economist for the erstwhile National Institute of Economic Policy and he had worked as a part-time Lecturer at the Durban-Westville campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal while doing his Masters degree at the then University of Durban-Westville.

He has been an academic since 2010. Since then, he has held professorships at the University of Johannesburg and the University of South Africa where he was also the Director for the Thabo Mbeki African Leadership Institute. He has also lectured at the Wits School of Governance, the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business where he was an Honorary Professor and the National School of Government.

He has held various fellowships including as a Distinguished Africanist Scholar at Cornell University & Yale World Fellow at Yale University as well as visiting researcher/fellow at the International Poverty/Policy Centre in Brazil, the Centre for the Study into African Economies at Oxford University, the Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection, the Center for Advanced Studies of African Society and the Molefi Kete Asante Institute for Afrocentricity. He has conducted research for institutions inside and outside South Africa, served in numerous editorial committees, boards/committees and councils, including the Presidential Economic Advisory Council.

He has been the Deputy President of the Executive Council of the South African Association of Political Studies. He has guest edited four special issues of journals and he is editor-in-chief of two journals as well as an editorial board/committee member of 4 journals. Prof Gumede holds a Master of Commerce and a PhD in Economics, a PGD in Policy Studies, a PGD in Leadership, an Honours in Economics and a BA with Economics & Sociology majors.

He has supervised to completion 18 Doctoral students and 10 Masters students. He has been an external examiner for various universities, reviewer for various journals and book publishers, facilitator and he has made over 60 presentations in conferences/colloquia/symposia, some of which were keynote speeches and plenary addresses. He is a C2 rated researcher by the National Research Foundation in South Africa.
