Prof Josiah Lebakeng

LEBAKENG Josiah is Professor at the Thabo Mbeki African School of Public and International Affairs, UNISA. He heads the focus area of security and intelligence studies. He studied sociology at the American University in Cairo, Egypt, urban sociology at University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania human services administration at Springfield College, Massachusetts, USA and obtained a doctorate from the University of the North (now University of Limpopo). He previously taught at the University of Limpopo, Vista University (now University of Johannesburg)

He worked at the South African Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York during South Africa’s non-permanent tenure in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) from February 2007 to December 2008 and February 2011 to December 2012 and continued with the United Nations General Assembly in 2013 to 2014. In November 2017 to November 2018, he was Head of Intelligence for SADC Preventative Mission in Lesotho (SAPMIL).Professor Lebakeng is author of an autobiography titled They Blunted Us: June 16, Exile and Homecoming (Ziable Publisher, 2021).
