This momentous occasion also commemorated a decade since the university's establishment in 2013. From its humble beginnings with an initial enrolment of 69 students, UMP has witnessed remarkable growth, currently catering to more than  8 000 enrolled students and offering a diverse range of 65 programmes.

Following the graduation ceremony, students had the opportunity to share their experiences with the SABC News team, reflecting on their educational journeys and the significance of this milestone.

The experience and benefits

"I am very grateful for this experience at UMP. I feel like my academics have really been recognized here," said 21-year-old Jesse Steyn, who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the UMP.

Steyn, who is not only the first in her family to graduate but also the overall best achiever in the entire university, expressed her excitement and pride. "Being recognized as the top performer in the entire university is truly an honour. It validates the hard work and dedication I have put into my studies."

She continued, "Last night, I was invited to an event where I won three academic excellence awards. It was an incredible experience to be acknowledged for my accomplishments. I am grateful to UMP for honouring its students, making sure that every student is appreciated and recognized for their efforts. These awards have given me even more reason to continue working hard and striving for excellence."

Another student from outside of South Africa noted, "UMP has been of great benefit to us international students, especially those from Swaziland. Firstly, its proximity to home makes it easier for our parents to travel to and from the university. Additionally, studying at UMP increases our chances of getting hired by a university, which can be challenging in another country with study permits."

"I had the opportunity to visit the UK, including prestigious universities like Oxford and Cambridge in England, as well as Saint Andrews in Scotland. It was a fantastic experience that provided me with valuable exposure to renowned educational institutions," said another graduate.

UMPMs Magagula shares her experience with the SABC News crew.

Proving necessary skills

According to Vice-Chancellor Professor Thoko Mayekiso, the establishment of the university has significantly facilitated access to education for the people of Mpumalanga and neighbouring countries. She stated, "About 80% of our student enrolment comes from the Province of Mpumalanga. Without this university, those students would have had to attend institutions in other provinces."

During the graduation ceremony, it was evident that the university's impact extended beyond education. The Vice-Chancellor highlighted that the research conducted by the graduating master's students focused on the province itself. The findings from these studies can be utilized to enhance service delivery in the province.

Notably, various topics addressed specific issues in each district of the province, demonstrating the university's commitment to addressing local challenges. The Vice-Chancellor also emphasized the job opportunities created by the university, which further contributes to addressing societal issues and empowering the region.

Several students expressed their gratitude towards the university, highlighting how it has enabled them to pursue their dreams and aspirations. They emphasized that UMP has provided them with the necessary skills and knowledge to embark on their professional journeys. These students are determined to make a significant impact and contribute to society by creating employment opportunities.

Supporting and assisting students

"As a former SRC President, I have personally witnessed the challenges that students face during their academic journey. However, I have also witnessed the remarkable efforts and dedication of the university management in providing support and assistance to students, as well as the student leadership," said Ms Carol Magagula.

She expressed her gratitude for the opportunities she has received and emphasized her desire to inspire other students to seize the opportunities that come their way and make the most of every moment.

Steyn is currently pursuing her honours degree in Psychology and intends to continue her studies at UMP until she completes her master's degree. Her goal is to contribute to the workforce within the university setting, utilizing her qualifications and expertise in the field.

Meanwhile, the university has aspirations of achieving a prominent position among the Higher Learning Institutions in the country. To accomplish this, UMP has strategic plans in place, including the expansion of its academic offerings. One of the university's goals is to establish additional faculties, such as the faculty of Health Sciences and Engineering. By broadening its range of disciplines, UMP aims to provide more diverse educational opportunities and meet the growing demands in these fields.
