The team was founded in 2018 to foster a culture of teamwork, excellence, and sportsmanship among staff members. The team has grown from a handful of enthusiasts to a thriving community of players dedicated to representing their university on the netball court.
"The team's humble beginnings saw a small group of women casually passing the ball around during exercise sessions, sparking a burgeoning passion for netball. This enthusiasm led them to actively seek out and recruit other women to expand the team.
Nowadays, our team is expanding steadily, welcoming like-minded individuals who are passionate about both the sport and the community it creates. We actively participate in competitive matches, showcasing our dedication and skill. Recognizing the achievements of individual players and sportsmanship is an integral part of our culture, reflecting our team's focus on both collective success and personal growth," explains Cynthia Moshaba, Assistant Coach and GS player.
The team is a shining example of UMP spirit on and off the court.
She further says that the netball team has been an incredible experience for all those involved, emphasizing the positive impact it has had on each member.
“It's such a joy to meet outside our 8:00-4:30 duties to build friendships and sisterhood while enjoying the sport we love. We are a combination of beginners, experienced, and advanced players who enjoy learning from one another and motivating each other in our different roles. Besides sweating and training hard, we have fun galore,” she says.
Looking ahead, the staff netball team has ambitious plans. They aim to participate in more tournaments and friendly games with other universities, including the USSA staff tournaments. Recruitment efforts are underway to attract new players and fundraising events are being organized to purchase netball kits and enhance training programmes.
