Master of Arts in Siswati

Programme Description

The Master of Arts degree in Siswati is intended to expose students to engage in the study of linguistics and literature. This includes modern and traditional perspectives. The programme includes the grammatical aspects, namely, morphology, phonology, semantics, syntax, and phonetics. In literature studies, literary theories and research methodologies are critiqued. The Master`s degree is by dissertation that would provide students with the opportunity to explore various topical issues in Siswati as a language.

 
Admission Requirements

• An appropriate Honours degree in Siswati or Siswati linguistics or a relevant NQF8 qualification from an accredited provider of higher education.
• The BA Honours in Siswati or any other equivalent qualification should be passed with a minimum average score of 65%. Students will be required to write a research proposal on a topic of their interest as part of the selection process.

Career Prospects

On completion of the Master of Arts degree in Siswati, students would be exposed to several employment opportunities in various sectors which require the use of Siswati language. These include teaching in schools and lecturing in higher education institutions. Authorship of books include African Languages and Literature (Traditional and Modern) and children’s literature. The graduate may work as an orator, folklorist, interpreter, translator, broadcaster, novelist, dramatist, phonetician, phonologist, morphologist, semanticist, onomastician, orator, folklorist, translator, broadcaster, novelist, dramatist, poet, editor, lexicographer, terminographer,  researcher, assessor, poet, editor, theatre artist, or advertising agencies.
