The Open Days drew learners from across Mpumalanga, introducing prospective students to UMP’s programmes, student life, and facilities. It also provided learners with opportunities to tour the campuses, attend presentations, and engage directly with staff and students.
Sessions covered at both campuses included information on student finance, applications and admissions queries, as well as student wellbeing and support services.
The Open Days also highlighted UMP's research activity, academic achievements, bursary and scholarship opportunities (including the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship), and the range of extracurricular and career development initiatives available.
Learner Experience
Many learners expressed their excitement at the prospect of studying at UMP. Lebogang Modipane, from Destiny Private College, hopes to pursue Agricultural Management in 2026.
“My experience was amazing. Everyone was friendly. The courses they offer here are interesting, I can’t lie. I love how spacious the place is. Everyone works as a team. I had an amazing experience,” he said.
Grade 12 learners experienced UMP first hand.
Snenhlanhla Mabuza from Sincobile Secondary School added: “We’ve had a great experience at the University, they have been good to us.”
Learners from Phola Secondary School also shared their views. “This programme is proper, it must happen every year so that learners get motivated in their studies and pass,” said Themba Dlamini. “We are very grateful to the University of Mpumalanga for giving us this opportunity. Thank you so much, we love you.”
Another learner, who has already applied to study Law, at UMP commented: “I’ve applied for a Bachelor’s Degree in Law. The experience was great – my questions were answered and the lecturers were helpful. I’m ready to study at UMP next year.”
A teacher from Sachila Secondary School said the sessions were valuable for her learners: “Our students were provided with useful information about their career options and considerations for future decisions. Programme leaders delivered the information effectively, making the session highly informative.”
Another learner added: “I am genuinely interested in joining the University, as this has been an excellent experience.” Dr Andile Sokani, a sociology lecturer at UMP, said: “The day proceeded as planned. We received more students than expected. After the presentations, and campus tours concluded, learners participated in entertainment scheduled outside.”
Through these events, UMP demonstrated its commitment to providing accessible, high-quality education while supporting learners in making informed choices about their academic and professional futures.
