The Mondi Science Centre, officially opened in 2006 by Dr Naledi Pandor, the then Minister of Education, has benefited over 609 289 individuals since its inception. Over the years, UMP has actively collaborated with the centre to help learners who have an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Innovation (STEMI) careers to deepen their understanding, while also encouraging those who have yet to consider STEMI-related subjects to explore their potential and build successful futures in science-related fields.
This year, NSW took place from 04 to 08 August, and it sought to encourage and enhance a scientifically literate society by demonstrating the practical application of STEMI. The event allowed for the promotion of STEMI creativity and advancement, including exposing learners to opportunities beyond the classroom.
It targeted a wide range of Grade 7 – 12 learners, out-of-school youth, and public members. It also supported student recruitment for STEMI-related programmes at UMP. Thus, it highlighted the role of STEMI in economic and human development.
The University of Mpumalanga is committed to advancing science and technology.
On behalf of UMP, Dr Thomas Mongwe passionately engaged various learners, educators, and public members through hands-on demonstrations/exhibitions which promoted the use of science in everyday life and encouraged interest in STEMI study fields/careers.
According to Professor Ndiko Ludidi, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Sciences (FANS) at UMP, the Faculty provides quality training for aspiring scientists, fostering lifelong learning, adaptability, and high academic standards through teaching, research, and industrial collaboration.
This is guided by accomplished, often NRF-rated researchers, the faculty offer qualifications across the schools of Agricultural Sciences, Computing & Mathematical Sciences, and Biology & Environmental Sciences. These Offerings range from Higher Certificates to PhDs. This reflects our growth in programmes, student numbers, and academic staff, and cements our position as a key contributor to science offerings,” he said.
With a broad spectrum of programmes and a strong presence at initiatives like the NSW, UMP continues to position itself as a university that embraces science and technology, nurtures innovation, and actively invests in shaping South Africa’s next generation of scientists, researchers, and innovators.
