Programme Description

The School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences (SCMS) aims to achieve excellence in teaching and research while producing high-quality graduates capable of solving problems and playing a prominent role in the development of information and communication technology (ICT), both within Africa and Internationally.

The Master of Computing (MComp) provides students with the necessary skills for a career in computing and/or to pursue a doctoral degree program. Students will select research topics that will culminate in a dissertation for the award of the qualification. The topic and final research proposal will be considered and recommended by the SCMS research committee for approval by the Faculty Postgraduate Research Committee. The dissertation must demonstrate a thorough understanding of the scientific principles underpinning the research, as well as an appropriate acquaintance with the relevant literature. The core focus of the SCMS is research on the role of ICT for Development (ICT4D) with emphasis on the Developing Country's contexts. This is complemented by our key research areas including ICT for business enhancement (ICT4BE), Cybersecurity, Communication Networks, Mathematical Modelling, Artificial Intelligence and the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR). Hence, research topics are expected to be in this direction.
