August in South Africa is dedicated to women in our lives and around the country. This year, the month is celebrated under the theme: Women's Socio-Economic Rights and Empowerment: Building Back Better for Women's Improved Resilience.



‘DISCOVER THE BEST IN YOU’, UMP WOMEN REMINDED

The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) celebrated Women’s Month with celebrations held at both the Siyabuswa and Mbombela campuses. Under the theme: "Discover the best in you", guests at two breakfast events included Her Majesty Queen Sekhothali Mabhena of the Ndebele Kingdom, UMP Vice-Chancellor, Professor Thoko Mayekiso, and other women from different spheres of the institution.



2022 CAREER EXPO ILLUMINATES JOB MARKET AND GIVES HOPE

Unemployed graduates and final year students at the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) were filled with hope and their spirits revived during this year’s career expo, which was held at the Mbombela campus, where companies and organisations were allowed to present the plethora of opportunities that exist in the various industries within South Africa and abroad.



PROF WAYI-MGWEBI AMONG TOP ACADEMICS IN WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME

University of Mpumalanga (UMP) Head of School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Ntombovuyo Wayi-Mgwebi, is part of the 36 academics in the Women in Leadership (WIL) programme, which is designed to strengthen senior academic women in male-dominated leadership structures to better understand the institutional cultures and power asymmetries found in patriarchal workspaces.



CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS WOMEN AND INTENSIFIES EXISTING INEQUALITIES

Though a global issue affecting all citizenry, climate change has a particularly negative effect on women, says Dr Isaac Agholor, a senior lecturer in Agricultural Extension and Rural Resource Management at the School of Agriculture, which is part of the Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Sciences at the University of Mpumalanga (UMP).



UMP SOCCER STAR LEADS FROM THE FRONT

University of Mpumalanga (UMP) Bachelor of Education Foundation Phase student, Katlego Malapane has a passion for sports and especially football. The former captain of the UMP Women’s Football team is inspired by the National Women’s Soccer Team, Banyana Banyana.



EDUCATING FOR SUSTAINABLE TOURISM IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA

Integrated learning and technology will see tourism students and the industry into the future, says Professor for Sustainable Tourism Management at the Cooperative State University of Baden Württemberg (Duale Hochschule) in Lörrach Germany, and Professor Dr Wendy Dwan Fehlner, during a seminar recently held at the Mbombela campus.



UNEMPLOYMENT MOTIVATES UMP ALUMNUS TO BECOME HER OWN BOSS

Unable to find work after graduating in 2017, University of Mpumalanga (UMP) alumnus, Mawethu Magagula, found a small piece of land and used her learning to start growing vegetable crops, and is today able to support herself and other vendors who she supplies with fresh produce.



UMP LECTURER HAS PASSION FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD LEARNING

University of Mpumalanga (UMP) Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase lecturer of educational psychology, Dr Linet Imbosa Muhati-Nyakundi, is a highly qualified and experienced academic with a demonstrated history of working in the higher learning industry.



KEEPING INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE SYSTEMS ALIVE IN THE 21ST CENTURY

The University of Mpumalanga (UMP), in partnership with Juta & Company, recently launched the book: Indigenous Knowledge Systems in the 21st Century: Recognising and Harnessing Their Worth, edited by Dr Mokong Mapadimeng, an Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer in Sociology in the School of Social Sciences.



HARP HOSTS RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM CELEBRATING ARCHAEOLOGICAL HERITAGE OF LOCAL REGION

The Hunter-Gatherer Archaeological Project (HARP), led by Dr Tim Forssman from the University of Mpumalanga, hosted a research colloquium while conducting fieldwork in July 2022. The colloquium’s purpose was in part to provide an update of the work completed thus far but to also celebrate archaeological heritage in the Mapungubwe region.
