LETTER FROM THE VICE CHANCELLOR

It’s been another jam-packed month at the university and one that has filled me with pride, joy and a fair bit of nostalgia! Our Mandela Day activities also reminded of a national hero and stalwart and how we can make this world a better place when we work together and do so selflessly.



LEARNERS ENCOURAGED TO CHOOSE CAREERS IN THE ARTS

High school learners from across the province who attended the 3rd Heritage Career Expo, which was held at the University of Mpumalanga (UMP), Mbombela campus, were encouraged to venture into careers in the arts and shown how to make a living from them.



YOUNG, TALENTED RESEARCHER JOINS UMP

The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) has appointed Dr Makgalake Pabalelo Radingoana, an academic with a strong teaching and research background. She joins the institution as a lecturer in Water Management in the School of Agricultural Sciences.



2021/2022 NSTF-SOUTH32 AWARDS

Water Management lecturer at the University of Mpumalanga (UMP), Dr Tatenda Dalu was nominated for the 2021/2022 National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF-South32), which has recognized him for his outstanding contribution to science, engineering, technology (SET) and innovation in South Africa.



UMP ENACTUS TAKES SECOND PLACE AT NATIONAL FINALS

ENACTUS, the pride and joy of the University of Mpumalanga (UMP), took second place after competing at the Enactus South Africa National Competition 2022, where they were neck and neck with Central University of Technology, during a ceremony recently held at the Sandton Convention Centre in Gauteng.



DECOLONISING THE CURRICULUM AT UNIVERSITIES

The social construct of curriculum decolonisation took centre stage in the times of the student movement Fees Must Fall. Many debates amongst students and lecturers took place within this period illuminating problems that were resultant from a modernist and colonial curricular.



UMP VOLLEYBALL TEAMS MAKING AN IMPACT

The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) volleyball teams recently participated in a tournament hosted by the University of Cape Town (UCT), where they made a good impression and lived up to the institution’s value of excellence.



UMP STUDENT AWARDED THE ABE BAILEY BURSARY

University of Mpumalanga (UMP) Bachelor of Arts General student, Precious Mamogobo will later this year jet off to the United Kingdom (UK) on a three-week educational tour, after receiving the Abe Bailey Travel Bursary in June this year.



UMP LAUNCHES INDIGENOUS GAMES

Committed to providing an environment that allows students to have a vibrant student life through sporting and recreational activities, the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) launched the Indigenous Games on 22 July at the Mbombela campus.



UMP ALUMNUS’ RESEARCH PAPER PUBLISHED INTERNATIONALLY

University of Mpumalanga (UMP) alumnus, Natasha Zulu, is on top of the world as her Honours final-year research paper was published in the UK and used by Routledge and Francis publishers. The research is published for people with an interest in exploring South Africa as a marketplace for meat analogues, and to introduce current information into the academic sphere.



UMP STAFF PARTICIPATE IN THE ERASMUS+ STAFF MOBILITY AND TRAINING PROGRAMME

Four University of Mpumalanga (UMP) staff members from the Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Sciences spent three weeks at the Harper Adams University (HAU) in the UK, where they participated in the Erasmus+ Staff Mobility and Training Programme, a European Union-funded initiative designed to support training periods for staff working in higher education institutions.



MANDELA DAY: UMP GIVES BACK TO LOCAL COMMUNITIES

The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) Siyabuswa and Mbombela campuses spent 67 minutes on Mandela Day by visiting centres for vulnerable children, planting vegetables at old age homes, and donating food and blankets to local communities in and around Mpumalanga Province.
