VICE-CHANCELLOR HONOURED FOR DEVELOPING UMP

Mrs Sophy "NoSinki" Mahlangu, a renowned Ndebele art custodian gifted the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of UMP, Prof Thoko Mayekiso with two Ndebele canvases and a special collection blanket in recognition of her contribution in developing UMP and isiNdebele. One of the canvases gifted to the VC is a painted canvas, while the other is beaded with Ndebele styles.



UMP HOSTS 2023 SITA CSR SCHOOL-ROBOTICS CHALLENGE

On 24-25 March 2023, the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) hosted the State Information and Technology Agency (SITA) CSR School-Robotics challenge. The competition is designed to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education among high school learners, with a focus to encourage creative problem solving and community engagement.



UMP ADVOCATES FOR DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

Promoting gender equality and addressing gender-based violence (GBV) remains a critical focus for many higher education institutions in South Africa. The University of Mpumalanga is no exception, and it has made significant strides towards creating a safe and inclusive campus for all, writes Dr Nonzwakazi Maqubela, Sociology and Gender studies senior lecturer and Chairperson of the Gender Forum at UMP.



UMP RUGBY TEAM OFF TO A STELLAR START

The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) rugby team has made significant progress since its introduction in July 2022. On 25 March, the boys' team took part in the Jimmy Stonehouse 10’s tournament, which was their first match of the year and was held at the Mbombela Stadium.



UMP RECEIVES INVALUABLE RESEARCH RESOURCE

The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) and Rivers of Life Programme have received a much-needed research resource in the form of a Ford Ranger Double Cab 4x4 vehicle donated by the Ford Wildlife Foundation (FWF).



MASTER’S STUDENT EXCELS AT BUDGET SPEECH COMPETITION

Xhantilomzi Nkamba, a Master’s student at the University of Mpumalanga (UMP), recently participated in the 51st Budget Speech Competition, which was held in Cape Town and attended by elite economists and the South African Minister of Finance, Mr Enoch Godongwane.



UMP hosts 2nd Pan-African Nematology Network workshop with the topic ‘Nematology and the One Earth Approach’

Nematologists, students, agricultural experts and farmers in Africa shared good educational practices, creating and strengthening networks between higher education institutes and stakeholders, and providing additional educational opportunities for those working in agriculture and nematology during the 2nd Pan-African Nematology Network (Panema) workshop.



PROF PARKER IS GROWING UMP'S RESEARCH FOOTPRINT

Professor Dan Parker, former Head of School for Biology and Environmental Sciences, and recently promoted to full Professor at the University of Mpumalanga, is a wildlife biologist with a focus on terrestrial mammalian ecology, particularly in the areas of large carnivore biology and human-wildlife conflict.



UMP APPOINTS AGRICULTURAL SYSTEMS ANALYST LECTURER

The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) has appointed Dr Mduduzi Shongwe, an Agricultural Systems Analyst with a particular research interest in mechanisation and agricultural energy systems.



SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS WANT TO MAKE AN IMPACT

University of Mpumalanga (UMP) students, Susan Nkosi and Ncedile Mnisi, are part of the first cohort of the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) programme, a new course the institution introduced in 2023.
