The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) paid tribute to Founding Vice-Chancellor Professor Thoko Mayekiso on 17 October 2025, celebrating her decade of transformative leadership that shaped the university into a beacon of academic excellence and integrity.
The farewell celebration brought together academic leaders from various institutions, government representatives, the business community, UMP staff, and students. The event featured vibrant cultural performances by students and staff, reflecting the university's spirit of unity and appreciation for a leader whose legacy will continue to inspire generations.
Appointed in November 2013 as the founding Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mayekiso led UMP from its inception – with only 169 students in 2014 – to a thriving institution with more than 10 000 students in 2024. Under her leadership, the university grew into a centre of academic excellence, innovation, and community engagement, firmly rooted in African scholarship and values.

Throughout her tenure, Professor Mayekiso placed strong emphasis on institutional development, academic quality, and governance. She oversaw the establishment of three campuses and the introduction of a wide range of academic programmes, including postgraduate studies.
Her leadership was defined by integrity, accountability, and excellence, with UMP achieving 11 consecutive clean audit outcomes – a reflection of her commitment to building an institution that is efficient, transparent, and future-focused.
In her farewell address, Professor Mayekiso expressed deep gratitude for the university's pioneering journey and the collective effort that made it possible.
"It has been a privilege to serve and deliver on all the promises made at my inauguration. We have celebrated a decade of excellence and built a university that stands tall among the best," she said.
She extended appreciation to the first UMP Council, under the leadership of Professor David Mabunda, for entrusting her with the responsibility of being the founding Vice-Chancellor.
"At the outset, it is important to pay a debt of gratitude to so many who have contributed to the success of the University of Mpumalanga under my leadership."
Reflecting on her early years at the helm, Professor Mayekiso acknowledged the support of Council, staff, and students who believed in the institution's vision and mission.
"Leading a band of pioneers who were caring, competent, and committed was heart-warming. We evoked the best in one another in the quest to leave a stamp of excellence in all our pursuits," she said, adding that the challenges and triumphs of building a new university from the ground up.
"Undertaking a journey is never a solitary effort. I was therefore never alone. Thanks to each one of you who provided support, words of encouragement, and prayers during challenging times," she said, highlighting UMP's achievements across its academic and operational pillars.
We have celebrated a decade of excellence with evidence on the ground that the opportunity to pioneer was fully embraced and optimally embarked upon. The iconic infrastructure and state-of-the-art facilities, such as this magnificent Great Hall, stand as proof of our commitment to building an institution of choice," she added.
"Keep on contributing your time, talent, and treasure. This great UMP deserves no less. Forward ever, backwards never. There are no goodbyes for us. Wherever you are, you will always be in my heart."

In a recorded message, Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Professor Blade Nzimande, commended Professor Mayekiso's leadership and praised UMP for its remarkable growth and transformation.
Speaking on behalf of the Mpumalanga Provincial Government, Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs MEC, Mr Speedy Mashilo, thanked Professor Mayekiso for her contribution to the University of Mpumalanga. He congratulated the management team under her leadership for championing good governance, which resulted in UMP receiving an unqualified (clean) audit opinion for the eleventh consecutive year.
On behalf of the UMP Council, Chairperson Mr Sabelo Mahlalela paid tribute to Professor Mayekiso for her exceptional leadership and lasting impact.
"Professor Mayekiso led with integrity, compassion, and purpose. Her dedication has shaped UMP into a thriving institution that continues to inspire excellence and transformation," he said.
Chancellor Chief Justice Mandisa Maya praised the Vice-Chancellor for her visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to higher education. "Professor Mayekiso expanded the university from 169 students in 2014 to over 10 000 in 2024 and fostered international partnerships. Her leadership, rooted in African values and entrepreneurship, has left a lasting legacy," said Chief Justice Maya.
Minister Nzimande also commended her for guiding UMP through a significant period of growth. "Under her leadership, UMP experienced remarkable transformation and progress. We hope to continue drawing from her knowledge and experience," he said.
