September is a month to reflect on and celebrate South Africa's rich and diverse heritage. This year, the Department of Arts and Culture has come up with the theme: "Reclaiming, restoring and celebrating our heritage" to encourage South Africans to protect and celebrate their heritage.



UMP BAGS COVETED NRF EXCELLERATION AWARD

The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) has been awarded the National Research Foundation (NRF) Excelleration Award. It was handed over during a prestigious ceremony that celebrated the ‘International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development’.



UMP HOSTS VIBRANT ANNUAL SPORTS DAY

University of Mpumalanga (UMP) sports stars came out to play at the annual sports day held on 24 September (Heritage Day), where the two campuses: Mbombela and Siyabuswa competed against each other in games full of energy and enthusiasm.



JAGERSFONTEIN SPILL – WORST YET TO COME

In the aftermath of the devastating Jagersfontein disaster in the Free State, Dr Gordon O’Brien from the University of Mpumalanga’s School of Biology and Environmental Sciences, warns that urgent attention is required so that a real understanding of the environmental impact of the spill to the vulnerable socio-ecological system of the Riet Catchment could be understood and mitigating measures be taken.



UMP LECTURER IS YOUNGEST MEMBER TO JOIN ARTS AND CULTURE ADVISORY PANEL

University of Mpumalanga (UMP) Culture and Heritage lecturer and cultural activist, Ms Thulisile Bhuda, is the youngest member and the only Ndebele woman to become a member of the panel of advisors for the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture on Indigenous Knowledge and Living Treasures.

UMP LECTURER ON STAFF EXCHANGE PROGRAMME IN GERMANY

University of Mpumalanga (UMP) lecturer at the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management from the Faculty of Economics, Development and Business Sciences, Mpho Sealetse, is on a staff exchange programme at Baden-Wurttemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW) in Lörrach, Germany, where she is working on her doctoral thesis under the mentorship of Prof Dr Wendy Fehlner and Prof Dr Valentin Weislämle.



STUDY SEEKS TO IMPROVE PUBLIC ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY

University of Mpumalanga (UMP) Director of Management Accounts, Budget and Payroll, Dr Queen Ntombikayise Ambe, has obtained her PhD from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) with a research interest in Annual Report Disclosure by Higher Education Institutions.
