The day was power-packed with activities that gave learners a glimpse into what it feels like to study at UMP. They also experienced the facilities first-hand and gained a deeper understanding of the programmes offered by the institution.

A learner from Kamhola Secondary School, Jeanpaul Mukendi, has an interest in studying Bachelor of Commerce. He was excited to learn that UMP offers qualifications that are not offered by other universities.

“Other universities specialise in specific fields like accounting or business management. Today, I discovered that when you're doing a Bachelor of Commerce, you can do two practices instead of one – at UMP you can combine practices like accounting and economics.

This information provides extended knowledge. When you complete the three-year programme you can choose which practice you want to focus on. This flexibility is beneficial, and I'm excited about the possibilities.”

UMPHigh school learners from around Mpumalanga enjoyed UMP's Open Day.

The Open Day also provided learners with comprehensive insights into student life at the university, such as showcasing the sporting activities available and demonstrating the state-of-the-art facilities.

Mukendi also praised the campus's aesthetics and atmosphere, saying, “My highlight was these buildings, this place is very beautiful. It's very big and the structure and location of the University is impressive.”

He further stated that Academic Staff who provided information about programmes were engaging, and gave detailed information, making it easier for a prospective student to make an educated decision about their chosen course of study.

“This experience has motivated me to apply to UMP," he said.

Another enthusiastic participant, Lindokuhle Sibani from Lehawu Secondary School, is interested in studying agriculture, especially animal production. He excels in Agriculture at school, often achieving level six and seven grades.

“UMP offers extensive agriculture courses, and what I like most is that in the third year, you get to go on a practical farming internship. You interact with farmers and gain hands-on experience throughout the year, which is incredibly valuable. This is the best experience.”

Sibani continued, “Another highlight of the day was learning about the application process and fees. The information provided was very detailed, and we received prospectuses to guide us through the application. UMP has produced many successful individuals in various fields, and I want to be a part of this esteemed institution. The Open Day has confirmed my decision to pursue my studies at UMP.”

UMPLearners received a comprehensive introduction into what the university has to offer.

University of Mpumalanga Marketing Director, Mr Themba Manana, explained that the Open Day is packaged to showcase UMP’s vibrant campus life, academic excellence, and state-of-the-art facilities.

“We wanted to showcase the state-of-the-art facilities that exist and wanted them to see these things all by themselves. We wanted to emphasize our commitment to providing quality education.”

Mr Manana further emphasised the institution’s commitment to providing quality education, fostering a supportive learning environment, and preparing students for successful careers.

“Additionally, we are promoting our scholarship opportunities, especially the Vice-Chancellor scholarship which was established by Vice-Chancellor Professor Thoko Mayekiso. We also showcased our extracurricular activities and career development programmes that we have on offer.”

The Open Day successfully highlighted the institution's commitment to academic excellence, student support, and community engagement by providing prospective students with a glimpse into university life and the opportunities available.

“UMP continues to foster a culture of growth, development, and success for all its students,” said Mr Manana.
