UMP Sports and Recreation Officer Mr Hendry Matonsi said the athletics team showcased their prowess, clinching a total of 12 medals across various categories, during the event that served as a platform to identify and select students who will represent our institution at the upcoming USSA athletics event in Stellenbosch in April.

"We've meticulously curated a squad of 21 athletes, with 13 from the Mbombela campus and nine from Siyabuswa. These athletes will represent the institution at a tournament in Stellenbosch," said Mr Mathonsi.

Gold medallist and second-year Nature Conservation Diploma student, Dineo Jennifer Mtsweni, reflected on her performance at the Mpumalanga Track and Field Championship and emphasized, “Teamwork and mutual support are important for our success.” She further explained that in a team, one sees their potential in others. “We are stronger together.”

Mtsweni, a seasoned athlete, expressed her elation at clinching the gold medal in the 1500m event, alongside a bronze medal in another category. "Winning gold medals rejuvenates me and fuels my ambition to excel further in athletics. My ultimate goal is to become a lead athlete," she said.

Debuting at the Mpumalanga Track and Field Championship, Mtsweni admitted to initial apprehensions but credited her dedication and rigorous training regimen for her good performance.

"The preparation was intense, with varying training routines aimed at enhancing endurance and performance. Thanks to my coach, Gula Mfungelwa, for instilling discipline and consistency in my training," she acknowledged.

Another gold medallist and first-year Bachelor of Arts student, Tondani Ndou, said the championship marked a memorable journey of self-discovery and accomplishment. "Although nervous at first, the experience was enriching, and winning the gold medal exceeded my expectations," Ndou shared.

Balancing academic pursuits with athletic endeavours posed its challenges, but she found solace in the camaraderie and encouragement of her teammates. "Athletics has always been my passion, and I refused to let it wane upon entering university. Joining the UMP athletics team has been a fulfilling decision, offering me not just athletic opportunities but also a sense of belonging and camaraderie."

As the UMP athletics team basks in the glory of their collective achievements, their success serves as a testament to the power of dedication, teamwork, and unwavering determination. With their sights set on future competitions, these young athletes are poised to leave an indelible mark in the realm of collegiate athletics, inspiring generations to come with their remarkable feats on the track and field.
