Her selection places her on a national stage where she will proudly represent both her university and community. It marks a significant achievement in her sporting career and reflects her dedication to both academics and athletics.
The Mpumalanga Sunbirds, known for their defensive strength and competitive edge in Division Two, are set to benefit from Ms Gcelu’s growing experience and leadership.
Her journey into netball began at age 15, when a coach encouraged her to try the sport despite her background in soccer.
“I had no experience, but they encouraged me to give it a try, saying I’d learn as I went along. By the end of that year, I was hooked and had become one of the team’s key players,” she recalls.
Now a seasoned player, Ms Gcelu has also remained committed to her academic growth. She recently completed an Honours degree in Agricultural Extension and Rural Resource Management and is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in the same field.
Ms Gcelu is as committed to her studies as she is to her sporting career.
Balancing studies and sport requires discipline and focus – qualities she credits to her involvement in netball. “Netball has taught me discipline, teamwork, and resilience. It’s not just a sport; it’s a platform for personal growth and building lifelong friendships,” she shares.
These attributes have supported her academic success and will no doubt continue to shape her journey as she aims to contribute meaningfully to her community through agricultural development.
Ms Gcelu's story is a powerful example of what can be achieved through commitment and effective time management. She embodies the possibility of thriving in both academics and sport, serving as a role model for aspiring student-athletes.
As she begins her new chapter with the Mpumalanga Sunbirds, Ms Gcelu remains grounded in her goals, driven by a passion for agriculture and a love for the game. Her path is sure to inspire others to pursue their ambitions with equal dedication.
