Recently held in Qheberha, the launch marked the establishment of the University’s fifth alumni chapter since its inception, reflecting UMP’s commitment to fostering lifelong relationships with its graduates.
The University Chapters aim to provide alumni and the University with a structured platform for engagement, collaboration, and the promotion of the institution’s interests and welfare.
Speaking at the event, UMP Vice-Chancellor, Professor Thoko Mayekiso, outlined the University’s strategic vision, known as UMP Mission 28, which focuses on sustainable development and strengthening the University’s brand through alumni engagement.
She highlighted the institution’s remarkable growth, with 6 001 graduates to date and upcoming graduation ceremonies scheduled for 8 to 10 May, noting that alumni play a vital role in advancing the University’s vision and overall development.
“Our alumni are crucial in positioning UMP as a leading academic institution. We encourage our graduates to mentor current students, project UMP positively on social media, provide feedback on curriculum gaps, and explore ways to connect students with job and internship opportunities,” said Professor Mayekiso.
Alumni as Ambassadors and Contributors
Professor Mayekiso further reinforced the importance of alumni in shaping the University’s future, emphasising that graduates serve as ambassadors, and their achievements reflect the institution’s success.
“Alumni are expected to uphold UMP’s values – excellence, integrity, diversity, collaboration, adaptability, and relevance. We urge you to support the University financially, provide mentorship, and create networks that will benefit both current and future students,” she said.
She also outlined UMP’s ambitious goal of increasing its alumni base from a few thousand to over 20 000 within the next five years.

UMP Director of Library and Information Services, Dr Nomonde dos Santos, shared insights into how alumni can continue to access library services.
“You don’t have to be physically present at the library to access its resources. Our website provides access to academic materials, databases, and tools such as Grammarly to support research and professional development,” she explained.
Dr Dos Santos further encouraged alumni to donate books and resources, emphasising that such contributions would support future students and enhance the institution’s academic resources.
Formation of the Eastern Cape Alumni Chapter Leadership
The event also saw the election of the Alumni Chapter committee members. The following alumni were appointed:
- Chairperson: Ms Mbali Sangqu
- Secretary: Mr Mduduzi Maphanga
- Treasurer: Ms Elihle Madlebe
- Additional Member: Ms Thuthuka Nyama
The newly elected Chairperson, Ms Sangqu, expressed her gratitude and commitment to serving the Eastern Cape alumni, stating: “I am honoured and humbled to stand before you today as the newly elected Chairperson. There’s no me without you.”
She added: “As we gather here, I am reminded of the incredible journey that has led us to this moment—from our formative years on campus to the countless memories we’ve shared. I am committed to listening to your ideas, concerns, and suggestions, and to working collaboratively with our alumni, faculty, and administration to achieve our goals.”
With UMP’s alumni network continuing to expand, the University remains dedicated to fostering meaningful connections that will contribute to its long-term success.
