Programme Description

The proposed Advanced Diploma in Animal Production is designed with two streams to meet two of the purposes of an Advanced Diploma, as in the HEQSF. Stream A will provide specialised vocational preparation for a career in animal production and the management of animal production systems. Stream B is designed to prepare students for postgraduate study through the deepening of their knowledge and understanding of theories, methodologies and practices in animal production science. The proposed curriculum of stream A, with its focus on management of animal production systems include modules on strategic management, principles and practices of management, business management and entrepreneurship, and animal production. The proposed curriculum of stream B includes modules on biostatistics and research design and analysis, basic sciences of microbiology and biochemistry, animal physiology including nutrition and reproduction, and animal behaviour.

Admission Requirements: 

The minimum entrance requirements are:
1. A Diploma in Animal Production with a minimum average of 60% in animal production modules in the last two years of the Diploma where the third year of the Diploma comprises WIL modules only
2. A relevant NQF level 6 qualification such as a Diploma in Agriculture which must include animal production modules in first and second year and animal production experiential learning in third year. A minimum average of 60% in animal production modules in the last two years of the Diploma where the third year of the Diploma comprises WIL modules only.
 

Curriculum Structure:

The Advanced Diploma in Animal Production programme comprises of two separate streams each with eight modules. Students will select one of the streams and then take each of the eight modules in that stream. There is no option for a choice within a stream hence, all modules in a stream must be taken.

Career Opportunities:

Graduates from either stream will be prepared to continue to a Postgraduate Diploma at UMP or another university or enter the workplace. Graduates will work with National and Provincial departments, Agricultural training and research Institutions, Private and non-governmental or non-profit organizations, and may also be in a position to work for themselves or other farmers’ groups. Graduates may also continue to postgraduate studies via a Postgraduate Diploma.
