The UMP Community will recall that in July 2020 we shared the good news about our ENACTUS: UMP Team’s sterling achievement in the 2020 ENACTUS National Competition. We reported that in 2020, due to the Regulations governing the National Lockdown, ENACTUS South Africa decided that the National Competitions be held through virtual platforms. That decision did not deter our vibrant ENACTUS Team and they took the challenge and adapted to the “new normal”, thereby living our UMP Value of Adaptability. Just to remind everyone about our Team’s achievement in 2020, UMP scooped the following awards:

Project: Hatching Hope (the chicken project)
  • 1 st Place: Nedbank Triple Bottom Line Sustainability Award
  • 1 st Place: Harmony LED Challenge Award
  • 1 st Place: Harmony Business Solution for Community Development Award

Project: Re-fuel (the plastic waste management project)
  • FORD C3 Building Communities Project Partnership Award (Finalist)
  • 2 nd Place: Unilever Waste Plastic Challenge Awards

Our Team also collected the following trophies:
  • The qualifiers trophy
  • Overall semi-finalist (5th place)
  • Most passionate and innovative team Award (an inaugural category)
  • Faculty Advisor of the Year Award (Dr Ferdinand Niyimbanira was the winner).

Some of these awards carry with them monetary prizes, for instance, for being the finalist in the FORD C3 Building Communities Project Partnership category, our Team won $5000 (US Dollars).

As a result of the impact of COVID-19, the trophies for the 2020 competition were only sent to the winning institutions in April 2021. MANCO, then, arranged a small ceremony for the representatives of the ENACTUS Team to present the trophies to the Vice-Chancellor and Management. The ceremony was held on Wednesday, 5 May 2021, during a MANCO meeting and was attended by representatives from our ENACTUS Team led by Dr Ferdinand Niyimbanira, the UMP ENACTUS Coordinator and his Assistant, Themba Mr Lukhele.
