The delegation was led by UMP Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Thenjiwe Meyiwa, and included Dr Maria Madiope, Director of Academic Support Services; Mr Richard Flames, Executive Director of Operations; Dr Konanani Thwala; and four students from the Faculty of Economics, Development and Business Sciences (FEDBS) and the Faculty of Education (FED).
The Fulda International Summer School provides participants with an immersive academic and cultural experience through lectures, workshops, institutional visits and collaborative projects. The programme brings together students and academics from around the world to engage in intercultural learning, innovation, entrepreneurship and collaborative problem-solving.
During the visit, the UMP delegation participated in academic and smart campus-related activities aimed at promoting innovation in higher education, strengthening international collaboration and enhancing understanding of global approaches to teaching and learning.
The students will also take part in a one-month international learning programme combining academic seminars, cultural exchange and collaborative learning opportunities.
The visit aligns with UMP’s Internationalisation Strategy and commitment to developing globally competent graduates, expanding international partnerships and providing students and staff with opportunities to engage in global academic environments.
Speaking about the visit, Professor Meyiwa said: “International exposure of students and academic staff is central to preparing graduates who can thrive in a rapidly changing global environment. It also strengthens institutional partnerships that will continue to benefit the University of Mpumalanga for years to come.”
The student participants were:
- Bonginkosi Innocent Hlatshwayo – PhD candidate, School of Hospitality and Tourism Management.
- Cebolenkosi Michael Mkhize – Master’s candidate, School of Hospitality and Tourism Management.
- Molatela Merriam Mamabolo – Third-year student, School of Education.
- Karabo Muthadi – Second-year student, School of Education.
The visit builds on the growing collaboration between UMP and Fulda University of Applied Sciences in teaching and learning, research and community engagement. Through initiatives such as this, UMP continues to expand access to international learning experiences and strengthen its contribution to higher education locally and globally.
