The CHPC Student Cluster Competition is one of South Africa’s leading high-performance computing initiatives, where undergraduate students enrolled in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at universities are trained to apply their knowledge and practical skills in key areas of advanced computing, including:

  • Linux system administration
  • Parallel programming
  • Artificial intelligence and data science
  • Networking
  • Scientific computing

Through real-world computational challenges, the competition helps develop the next generation of high-performance computing specialists while encouraging innovation, teamwork, and problem-solving.

The UMP team secured its place at the national finals after an impressive performance during the regional selection rounds at Stellenbosch University in Cape Town, where they competed against universities from across the country.

Representing the University of Mpumalanga at the national finals will be Ms Rendani Ramaphosa, Mr Phathutshedzo Mamagau, Mr Olerato Phafane, and Mr Siyabonga Ndhlovu.

The team is mentored by Mr Tshifhiwa Samuel Mphephu, who was named Best Promising Male in the same competition in 2025. The students are also supported by Ms Issah Ngomane and the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences.

The students’ qualification reflects UMP’s commitment to nurturing highly skilled graduates with advanced digital, computational, and problem-solving capabilities. Their achievement also contributes to South Africa’s growing research, innovation, and high-performance computing ecosystem.

The University of Mpumalanga congratulates the students, mentors, and the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences on this remarkable accomplishment.
